I know Atom Smasher was the working title of Meltdown, but was this version the game from Cumma?
Neither game was "from Cumma". Meltdown (then under the working title "Atom Smasher") by Videa was the game used by Cumma with the MetaWriter at the 1983 CES.

From the description and screenshots on the Video Soft page and at AtariProtos.com, "Atom Smasher" by Video Soft is a completely different game from "Atom Smasher"/"Meltdown" by Videa/20th Century Fox.

3 different prototypes exist – each being a different level of the game. Unfortunately, none of the prototypes are 100% complete...
Someone should merge them into one ROM.
I got the impression from their page description that the cartridge contained all three versions on one cart (which would explain the 16k cart size and $50 price,)
Yes, but probably without combined gameplay.

If they are three different incomplete levels, it may not be practical to combine them without writing a significant amount of new code. For example, if level 1 or level 2 can not be completed in its current state, how would a player advance to the next level?

the 3D looked intriguing, but when I checked out the screenshots with my 3D glasses there was a lot of color bleed which diminished the effect.

It was always necessary to make adjustments to a TV when viewing red/blue anaglyph 3D anyway. (Then try to adjust it back to "normal" again afterward.)

Yes, that's pretty obvious.

Rom Hunter was asking if the VideoSoft "Atom Smasher" was the one "from Cumma" and I was explaining that it was Meltdown (not this new game from VideoSoft) which was somewhat related to Cumma (although neither was developed by them, as I stated).

Sure. But if the game deserves it, a little work to make it playable is not a bad idea.

Crystal clear.

Thanks.

can we buy with confidence?

A quick Google research reveals not much except: http://newsgroups.derkeiler.com/Archive/Rec/rec.games.pinball/2010-07/msg03921.html

And a $250 donation to the NRCCC  : http://www.campaignmoney.com/political/contributions/pennsylvania_kingston_18704.asp?cycle=02

I've never had to before. Of course, I've use Digital Video Essentials: HD Basics [blu-ray] (and previously "A Video Standard" on laser disc) to keep my TVs calibrated.

The color bleed was different on each game, so you'd have to use a different adjustment for each one. Yuck.

The label artwork itself isn't bad, it's just not professional. (That said... label artwork has nothing to do with a game being good or bad - but it can negatively impact the overall impression of the quality of it.)

It's interesting though to see this stuff pop up. Knowing more about the history of where these have been all this time and how they've suddenly reappeared would be a good read. Also, the 3-D aspect is interesting, since I've been wondering if the 2600 could do that or not.

But not interesting enough to actually buy them. I'll wait for the ROM releases.

A little more info can be found here.

i thought "owning" ROM releases of games was for back up purposes.

why not give these guys the money deserve for making these games available.

They will be releasing the ROMs for people to download after the games have sold out. The games will sell out eventually to people who want to collect them. I'm not a collector. I can wait.
