Welcome everyone!!

Might as well come in here with a little bang.

I'm working on Defender to get 200,000. That could take awhile!!!

As far as Lady Bug is concerned, that game gets pretty hectic at around the 8th board on. No free men, so u never last very long. Unless your name is Todd Rogers.

Now, I've got some work to do, I'm gonna give Qix and Vanguards a run.

If you could do me a favor and post your scores in text as well it will make it easier for me to copy and paste into the leaderboard.

Also, take a look at the HSC Rules if you haven't already.

Thanks much and welcome aboard!

I held the AtariAge HSC record on Defender for all of 2 hours and 8 minutes before this douchebag swooped in and quadrupled my score. Terrific.

Moral of the story: when you want to stay on top, don't tell your brother about the competition until after it closes. :D

Astro Fighter: 6,130

Bank Panic: 8,300 (Wow, what an odd game...)

Defender: 7,925 (I did better than before... I set up my X360 controller, so the controls felt amazing... and I had complete control, I just suck at this one)

Lady Bug: 39,550 (Very interesting game, I never put more than a few minutes into it. Seems pretty easy to get 100,000 if I play a bit.)

Mouse Trap: 22,220 (Very odd game... don't like it.)

Sinistar: 107,270 (Somehow I pulled this out of my ass. Only the third time ever beating the 2nd level.)

Star Castle: 5,750 (I remember playing the crap out of this on the Apple //e... this version is much harder)

Toobin: 1,209,575 (There is no spoon... )

Vanguard: 7,270 (I never played the Arcade version... the 2600 version is MUCH easier.)

Qix - 20,958

Vanguards - 21,300

I've known of its exsistance for years and years. I never gave it a try. I finally blew the dust off and tried Qix on MAME 0.72. What a simple, yet fascinating concept this game has. The one thing that makes it a rare game is the random movement of the actual Qix character. Almost every game in the eighties follows some kind of pattern, in which movements and enemies can eventually be predicted, then mastered. There is no pattern for the way that Qix moves. The movements are completely random. It kind of reminds me of something you would see in a screen saver.

As for Vanguard, it is an interesting shooter that allows you to shoot in 4 directions with 4 different buttons.

Time to go trap some mice.

Mousetrap - 105,560

This game similar to Ladybug in the fact that it is simple the first couple of boards, then speeds up and becomes very difficult.

If I were to criticize this game, the first two things that come to mind are the fact that:

1) The controlling of the mouse lags at times.

2) The hawk pulls some unfair moves at times. You will be cruisin around collecting stuff and BAM!! He appears right over top of you. There is no defense to that.

Today was the first time I have tried the arcade version of Mousetrap.

It certainly won't be the last.

I have notice that the speed increase comes with the scoring, I tried to get the most points as possible on thew first screen and at around 50K it was already fast.

For the hawk, you have to listen for it and then directly go to the IN.

Astro Fighter is like Space Invaders meets Galaga. A very tough and demanding game.

What I really don't like about this game is the low level of satisfaction in the scoring. For instance, those little turds that fall down nets you a whole 60 pts. That is gay. And the first round invaders give you a measly 20 pts each.

The PPM average is extremely low, as is my rating on this game.

sinistar: 173,595

I found some very good tips in the magazine Joystick September 1983.

Such as bombing Sinistar before he's fully completed and that you can get several bombs from the same rock.

I manage to get close to 90k on the first level.

Hey guys:

I've been busy this week getting setup for my Retrocade party tonight which is why I haven't played all of the tourney games yet.

I'll be streaming the event starting around 7 PM EDT tonight if you want to check it out. You may want to tune in sometime between 7:15 and 7:30 when I open the gates to the Retrocade.

What I really need are three different cameras but this is a low budget effort.

Here's the link:

BTW, if things clear out relatively early and I'm not shitfaced, I'll turn the camera on Star Castle and stream some games.

Yeah, Astro Fighter wasn't my fave in this tourney either. Still, after a few games I actually started enjoying it more than I thought I would. I think the sound effects are basic but cool and since you can only have one bullet on the screen at any given time, the game rewards patience and selective use of ammo.

My main gripe with the game is the glitchy graphics--especially on the screen with the enemies that vaguely resemble TIE fighters.

All in all, a good history lesson for me, as this game is kind of a lesser known symbol of an era when most games were some variation on the Space Invaders theme.
