foft
Thanks Paul and Harvey. Really nice and varied. Only up to the Hawkquest level so far, but nice to see the Zaxxon and Scramble style levels on the demo. Must have been a lot of work! 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3592382 Share on other sites
biobern
Great game, and I also like the repetitive music! It rocks! Thank you! 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3592494 Share on other sites

Roydea6
This is great run from the IDE+2 interface Bios menu Load Executable option. Reasonably fast load time. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3593042 Share on other sites

+playsoft
This is fantastic. Are there plans to release it as a hardware cartridge? No it won't be released on cart - it's a hobby and I don't want to commercialise it at all. I appreciate there may be people that don't want to have to flash a cart themselves but luckily this is the Atari community. I am sure if they ask there would be people willing to help. I would for anyone in the UK. Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3593681 Share on other sites
+playsoft
The 2 background planes , animated as well, astounds me. How is this done? It appears the distant background scrolls 'behind' the next layer of background, which I'm pretty sure the A8 hardware can't do right? So is it just clever tile / charset manipulation? (Or is it a SECRET?) Concerning the music ... any constantly-playing music will get repetitive. It would be great to have the option to silence it with the press of a key. Or even just mute the harmony and just play the nice bass line by itself for a stretch. It's just character animation. I used 8 characters in total to form two 2x2 squares. The same animation is used in both squares and a mesh is applied over the top of one of them. The source to an earlier demo (when it was disk based) is available here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/234237-what-made-crownland-so-colorful/?p=3172380 The code was given for the multiplexer but it will include the rear character animations too (it's from a while back and I don't remember how readable it is - probably a lot better than it is now!). 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3593690 Share on other sites
+playsoft
I think the opposing opinions were a bit harsh but there were some valid points just raised in a bit OTT way but free speech is just that. As one of the people who love the game, the music and the fact its been finished I'd say just don't let it irk you, we love it and thank you for all the work by you guys, we are very grateful for the time taken to write this gem. Paul.... And yes, it should be fun, sorry its been soured a little but horses for courses.. Just to be clear I have no issue with anyone not liking the game - there are things I don't like either. It's snide comments like "feeling sorry for the code" that I thought were completely unnecessary. One of the options with the music was to have my two teenage nieces who are both musical do something. I would have enjoyed it and I think they would have too, but I wasn't going to risk exposing them to any nasty comments. 3 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3593695 Share on other sites
+playsoft
Does the code say something, "Increment one position" and then it finds the right code for the direction of travel. Or: Is there a whole routine for scrolling right and a whole routing for scrolling up? They are different routines but they reside at the same addresses on different ROM banks. Hence the main program (which resides in RAM) simply has to select the vertical or horizontal background bank and can then call the routines (initialise background, scroll background etc) blissfully unaware of what type of level it is. I never did any bank switching back in the day (I didn't make it to the XL) but feel I have made up for it now... Irgendwer
It's snide comments like "feeling sorry for the code" that I thought were completely unnecessary. I think you got that wrong and/or this was misleading. What I meant is, that I think your code (which seems quite elaborated to me and surly took a lot of time to develop) deserves better fitting unique music and original (not ripped) graphics. This is maybe what some of us bothers most: The delta to have a really brilliant and original production seems not that big. Some productions are even not worth to comment them, but part of the controversy here could be the feeling that the current result seems to be "missing a chance". I hope my statement is now clearer. My intention was not to demotivate you! 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3593716 Share on other sites
kiwilove
I don't mind the criticism (although it can be hard to accept) as long as it is fair comment - because really valid comments can be of use in future projects maybe? maybe not. I knew people would either love or hate the music chosen - no matter what music is used. For those who chose to blast comments onto AB! It is their taste I cannot understand - and there is that phrase 'there is no accounting for taste' that comes to mind. Just like my list of top Atari and coin-op shooters would not agree with other peoples' choices - and even more so for other game genres. Anyone who says the game is too easy and boring - are playing the wrong difficulty level for them. Those who are use to coin-op difficulty levels - should automatically go to the two higher difficulty levels. Though I doubt in doing this, it won't change their mind. Players should play this game for themselves and form their own opinion about it - as this is a game meant to be played through. It is fun for those who want non-stop action - and simply to blast'em. I did choose to re-use graphics from various games in some kind of celebration of shooters - and from various outstanding graphic demos as an overall tribute to things Atari - and I thought most would enjoy seeing this done - as it would be something rare to see. I did enjoy seeing those Atari Joke video animations - though I saw them after AB! was largely completed. chevymad
Took me awhile to figure out how to reprogram my atarimax from my sdrive.. But was well worth it. iesposta
Took me awhile to figure out how to reprogram my atarimax from my sdrive.. But was well worth it. Great game! I just looked up how to reprogram my Maxflash 8Mbit also, as I remember putting SDX and then that Adventure WIP all from the Atari computer as I don't have the USB programmer. It's on my SIO2SD drive. Can't believe how much this game tributes so many Atari Computer games. If it was just the black and white space station and enemies that would be a great game, but this final work... words escape me! 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3593944 Share on other sites
spookt
Finally managed to play this on real hardware last night using the xex on my Incognito. It's even better on the 'real thing'! I love the fact that you've used familiar elements from other games, it's a real walk down memory lane! Thanks again for a great piece of work. I know I'll be coming back to it for a while. (Might need a new joystick though!) 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3594017 Share on other sites

emkay
Well... It's hard to find words. In "some other" forums , I had to read "they had seen stuff like that in the 1990s already. I wonder, how people could get that much off the road As I wrote Graphics and gameplay were unique and unexpected great. But the music doesn't fit ... even barely ... and, well, yes, I know the issue... POKEY has to sound not like music ... so people get lucky .... but , I wonder, what could happen, if the soundtrack sounded like music and fitting all in all? Possibly people from "outside" could find interest? 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/214476-gtiablast-wip-demo/page/6/#findComment-3594333 Share on other sites
