HSC10 Round 15: The Devil May Care!

I'm still not sure what the best tactic is but learning to use the shield might help a bit - yes the PAL pink section seems to make the missiles (eggs!!) etc hard to see - brightness down contrast up, or was it brightness up contrast down ...

 

I'll share some of my tactics. These work for me, but I'm sure there are other ways to go about it. There is a bit of "risk vs. reward" regarding the bridge. I'm guessing that most people have already noticed that crossing the bridge and defeating Satan will upgrade your cannon. You start with two shots on the screen at once. Defeating Satan once will upgrade you to four shots, while the second time will upgrade you to "rapid fire." (Not sure if there is a shot limit, the shots seem to fire as fast as I can push the button. Dying drops your cannon back down one level until you are back at the basic two-shot cannon.

 

In addition to upgrading your cannon, crossing the bridge and defeating Satan will give you bonus points for every flag that has been added to the castle. I think you get 10,000 points for every red flag (symbolizing 10 levels completed) and 1,000 for every white flag (symbolizing 1 level completed.) So it would initially seem to be in your best interest to build the bridge and cross as many times as possible to score the bonus as often as as you can.

 

BUT, every time you cross the bridge, the chasm gets a little bigger, requiring more bridge pieces to complete the bridge. A bigger chasm also means that you have less space to maneuver in.

 

There is one additional bonus to crossing the bridge that might not be immediately apparent: it allows you to skip a wave. So it's best to time your bridge crossings to coincide with the most difficult, enemy-heavy levels. Meaning it's best not to cross the bridge on the levels with Beelzebub (the big head that spits fire) or the levels with the two groups of four circling gargoyles. They are the easiest and should be used as opportunities to build your bridge up.

 

So here's how I like to do it:

Stage 1: Shoot a gargoyle (one at a time), collect a bridge piece, put it in place. Repeat.

Stage 2: Complete the bridge.

Stage 3: Kill Beelzebub.

Stage 4-12: Kill the gargoyles, etc.

 

Stage 13: At this point I like to cross the bridge to power up my gun.

 

From here on out, keep building up your bridge on the slow stages (two groups of four gargoyles and Beelzebub). Once the bridge is complete, keep your cannon to the right side of the screen when the second in a set of stages comes up so you can quickly exit if things look too crazy. Note that if a "rock" falls on your bridge, it will become impossible to cross even if you are already on the bridge and to the right of the hole created by the rock. Use your shield to defend the bridge from rocks dropped by demons as your regular shots will not destroy them.

 

Once your cannon is powered up, keep building/repairing the bridge but don't cross until you are at a stage that is particularly difficult. Obviously, if you lose some lives you should build and cross more often to keep the cannon powered up. Also make sure that you cross as many times as you can on your final life to collect all of those bonus points that you have been banking.

A couple of things folks

 

Devilator - try holding fire in when playing, this way you can actually control the lift!!! (sorry elevator ;) )

 

Devil's Caverns - the "-1" to DROPOFF literally drops you off to the next level of the hell, sometimes you have no choice. The end of game rating (usually derogatory) is based on gold collected. Report your maximum Experience points when posting. Use 0 in room 1 to trade EXPERIENCE points for SPEED and STRENGTH thus:

I got on to level 6, it seems to change levels every 22 or 23 boards. When I hit board 120 ish all the red flags disappeared I think it was when the stack of red flags reached the score. So I'm not sure whether it was starting a new stack or not, I didn't get far enough to see.

 

The pattern of the boards changes around the 80th, also you have to hit the red devils head thing a few times to kill it on some of the levels.

Still having a love hate relationship with Little Devil (and my collection of 4 Girlfriends) - think I will lock myself in the dungeon :-o Don't be put off by the initial poor colission detection, the game is quite fun to play and you get a bunch of lives to compensate... gets tricky on the later levels (see screenshots) you need to use the 'S' power-up to go through the heads/balls as well as the baddies. Try dropping off and moving under / dropping off and boosting / hold L/R / wiggling as you fall. The game is quite addictive 161,300 Hint: go to the top left corners as soon as each level starts and get out pronto!

No worries, it's one of those games where you can get more points failing and repeating the levels - they need bigger level completion bonuses! It's not a bad game, I wonder how many levels there are... The timer boom noise is great :)

Try holding in fire when playing Devilator, it's not that bad (honest), gets challenging after 100pts or so ;)

 

If you or orpheus want to have a crack at the Level 3 'Hollow record (see 1st post then feel free)
