As far as the saga of my dead MVS goes, today I bodged together a CRT discharge tool, put on my big-boy pants, and pulled out the monitor chassis.

 

Turns out the chassis is a 'Hantarex MTC 9000' from may of 1989, which is a bit of an odd duck. Parts are available, but nobody seems to service them-probably since it needs a monitor that nobody has handy. Somebody on ebay sells them from spain, so I went for one of those. If nothing else it'll probably get me going while I build motivation to do a cap kit and flyback on my current one. It could take me years to build up to that. 🙄

The new one's MUCH cleaner than mine, I've come away from car repairs cleaner than I am right now.

I always liked Mahjong Slidell. I use to play it with family members that were familiar with the game. I think I have a Mahjong game on the Neo-Geo for the AES. Although it's been a while since I played it.

 

I would love to have the Mahjong controller for the collection. But that piece is expensive.

It's (this guy). Actually quite a lot of shops have the parts (including (paradise) where I normally get stuff), but it's the service on this Hantarex unit that is way tougher to find. This 'Tecknoservice' sells referbished chassis units for (probably) way less than the cost of sending mine in. 100% ebay feedback too. If this works out, I'm buying another one from him as a spare.

 

Hantarex Monitors are apparently an Italian brand--I'd sure never heard of them before. Google says they're not really rare here, but I was still pretty surprised. I fully expected to be looking at some variety of wells gardner monitor setup in there. 

 

Also while I was back there I found some chewing gum that's been stuck back there for at least 20 years 🤣

That's about how long I've owned the thing.

Before me it had ~92,000 quarters run through it--according to the coin counter.

And yes, I actually did leave the chewing gum in place. 🙄

Most of the Aleck 64 games are 2d games that i doubt the HNG64 (or any other arcade board of the time) would have any problem with them, then there are the 3D games... which is hard to say, the HNG64 fighting games were comparable to PS or N64 fighting games of the time and Rev Limit doesn't exactly look better than the HNG64 driving games... so probably there wasn't that much of a difference in capabilities in both of the hardware and I'm sure both were a pain in the arse to work with (N64 was infamous in that sense and i have yet to hear anything good about the HNG64 ^_^u...).

I love my HNG64, but yeah, it was a mistake, they needed a new NeoGeo but SNK should have aimed for *way* higher specs than the HNG64... and SETA, well, i can't really say but maybe they had better connections with Nintendo than SEGA or Sony, and at the time of creating a cheap and capable arcade board, instead of using the Titan or a PS1 based board they just used the N64, but anyone would have worked just fine.
