Kurt_Woloch
Here are my times for this past week (June 8th through 14th)... Arcade: Combat School - 55 min. in 2 sessions Arcade (?): Baby Pac Man - 501 minutes in 4 sessions Apart from fiddling around with a data manager for the Philips G7400 which is not a game, but a PC program which converts pictures to the G7400's graphics format, I've played two arcade games. The first one is Combat School where I managed to get through all the regular events, but not completed the final hostage rescue which is pretty hard because you've only got one life and die on the first hit. Moreover, once you get to that stage, your score gets set to a bit over 200,000 points no matter how many points you scored in the regular events. As for Baby Pac Man, I don't know if this is actually eligible because I don't have an actual arcade unit, but I played it on Visual PinMame. Now this is a combination of pinball and a video game. The video game part is emulated, but the pinball part is simulated. It does run the actual ROM of the arcade original, but the pinball action is simulated, not a real pinball table. As such, that part would be a PC program running on a modern PC, thus ineligible, although the video game part would be eligible for the Top 10 because it's emulated. Don't know what to do here... Anyway, I managed to complete the 3rd maze, at which point you score an extra game and the mazes start over with different colors and more difficult ghosts. I found several tricks that helped me boost my score: - At least for this way of gaming, you often get sequences where the two holes alternate. This advances the center arrows quickly, giving you extra babies. If you're good enough with that, you can offset your losses with that. - When you've earned a power pellet, hitting a hole on that side will cause Pac-Man to appear in the maze entering on that side. You can eat the power pill you earned, but you can also exit the maze again, in which case the power pill stays there, and on hitting the hole you get to enter the maze again. As long as you've got dots to eat in the lower half of the maze, it's advisable NOT to eat the power pill, but gobble up a few dots and exit again... you'll be back soon with the ghosts returned to the center, so that within a few runs you can gobble up most of the lower half of the maze without too much danger. Or you can earn an additional power pellet, then you have two, and if one of them is on the lower half, you can eat that and advance to the upper one. I would still leave the upper one alone though as long as there are dots to gobble up in the lower half. I can remember not having played that game often back in the day because I considered it a rip-off... you got a small pinball game and a watered-down version of Pac-Man, and it cost you 10 ATS for a single game while at most pinballs you got 2 games for 5 ATS at that time, and you got a full game of Pac-Man or Ms. Pac-Man at 5 ATS on other machines as well. However, you have actually better chances of surviving here because each "life" is at least one go in the maze, followed by a pinball run and another go at the maze (unless you screw up the first go in the maze so that you don't get to play pinball).
Kurt_Woloch
Well, I played Kaobber back in late 2007 for the Atari 2600 HSC, and I gave quite a few tips on how to play the game. You can find the thread here: http://atariage.com/forums/topic/117208-hsc-season-5-week-12-kabobber/ Reading the manual probably will help as well... most of all, figuring out which enemy has got which name. carlsson
This week, I played no games at all. :-( To compensate somewhat, at least I spent Sunday evening by scanning in 17 old brochures, mostly PET related.

+thegoldenband
Here's the (very late) summary for Week 24, running from June 8 - 14. We logged 2195 minutes of eligible playtime, playing 27 games on a total of 6 systems. Top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 820 2. Baby Pac-Man (Arcade) - 501 3. Historyline 1914-1918 (PC (DOS)) - 270 4. Klax (Atari 2600) - 140 5. Grand Prix (Atari 2600) - 87 6. Combat School (Arcade) - 55 7. Seaquest (Atari 2600) - 40 8. Galaxian (PC (DOS)) - 35 9. Enduro (Atari 2600) - 30 10. Laser Blast (Atari 2600) - 25 Pre-NES top 10: 1. Kaboom (Atari 2600) - 820 2. Baby Pac-Man (Arcade) - 501 3. Klax (Atari 2600) - 140 4. Grand Prix (Atari 2600) - 87 5. Seaquest (Atari 2600) - 40 6. Enduro (Atari 2600) - 30 7. Laser Blast (Atari 2600) - 25 8. Megamania (Atari 2600) - 23 9. Ice Hockey (Atari 2600) - 21 9. River Raid (Atari 2600) - 21 Top 10 systems: Not enough different systems for a top 10. (The Atari 2600 would've been #1 with 1274 minutes, followed by the "arcade" platform with 556.) Well, it's another banner week for the VCS, though Baby Pac-Man and Historyline give some presence to other platforms. In addition, two of the VCS games that appeared on this week's tracker are now within 20 minutes of making the 1000-minute club. (Which ones? And will they cross over? Only time will tell...)
karokoenig
@ Atarian: Look at what we're playing this week in the High Score Club! It's KABOOM! Scores are accepted till early next monday, I think. Wouldn't that be a good week to roll the score? Also, here are my gameplay times. More variety this week, and a couple of new flea market acquisitions (about which I'm rather excited; I found good stuff) still waiting in line for next week. Atari 2600 Klax: 110 min High Score Club. That is one very good port, and I'm very impressed about how the 2600 handles it. However, the hardcore highscore monsters in the HSC found a couple of glitches already. It's a late-stage proto. Interton VC4000 Cartridge 01 - Autorennen: 5 min Cartridge 03 - Paddle Games: 10 min Cartridge 21 - Reversi: 8 min The newest gadget in my console fleet, and it's an unusual sight so see. What we have here is the only game console that has been entirely made in Germany, originally by Grundig. The Grundig version failed, because it could only be played on a few Grundig TV sets. So Interton took over, built a clone that could be used on standard TVs and the console held itself on the german market for quite some time in the late 70s and early 80s. Graphics are crude, and sound has only one channel, but it has very responsive analog sticks and a 12 button keypad on the controller. The system is very light, but robust. I like the feel of it, and especially the controllers. Well-built machine. Here's some english info on it. The carts offer a surprising variety. "Autorennen" (car race) has variants that play like Night Driver, others play like Indy 500 and others play a bit like Bump n Jump (all 2600). "Paddle Games" is roughly the same as Video Olympics on the 2600, with some fun Pong-like games like Tale Tennis - plus variants of what could be described as "Breakout". Lots of bang for the buck back in the days. PC (DOS) Historyline 1914-1918: 519 min Yeah, well... Last week, I mentioned that I finally beat the last map, but technically, I haven't beaten the whole game. There's the whole Allied side of the campaign. I decided to start playing through the first maps and see how long my interest lasts. So far, the Allied side is a bit easier, and I'm having fun. Maybe one day I'll make it through all 24 of them. Problem is that DosBox seems to be unwilling to properly install the game, so I start it directly from CD. That procedure doesn't let you save games, so I have to play the maps through in one go. And some of these maps take a looong time... Game Boy Classic Shanghai: 10 min Ah well... Shanghai. Awesome puzzle game. Totally love it and can play it for hours on basically any system. Not so much on a gameboy. Can you imagine how hard it is for my 42-year old eyes to make out the tiny tiny details of the tiles on a matchbox-sized screen? A big no-no. Stay away from it, guys. carlsson
Acorn Electron: 3D Maze [iJK Software] - 3 min. Felix and the Fruit Monsters - 3 min. Felix meets the Evil Weevils - 4 min. Invaders [iJK Software] - 12 min. While I generally find IJK Software's titles on the Oric to be top notch (side note: I need to repair my Oric so I can contribute some play time here), the Electron titles are adequate at best. However I have only played 3 out of 10 games published for the Electron, so there may be better ones to find. MSX2: Quarth - 101 min. Kurt_Woloch
Here are my times for this past week (June 15th through 21st)... sorry, no gaming at all this week. I got in another gig and spent over 6 hours rehearsing some songs for the gig which I never played before on my new keyboard. Then I spent more hours optimizing some of my VB5 programs so that they get smaller and faster (after examining them with a disassembler). Skippy B. Coyote
Time to report in for my first week participating in this thread! I gotta say I had a lot of fun keeping track of the time I spent playing games this week (06/15 - 06/21), and I think that keeping a log of what I played and how long I played it for actually gave me a little greater appreciation for my favorite hobby. I knew that I spent a substantial amount of time every week playing games, but I don't think I realized just how much time that was until today when I added up all the play times for the week. That'd be Sonic 3 & Knuckles for the Genesis, with 1027 minutes giving it ticket #155 to that elusive fraternity.

karokoenig
Atari 2600 Kaboom: 72 min HSC. Now, after not even becoming a member of the Bucket Brigade (3000+ points), I can appreciate Atarian's scores even more. NES Ice Climber: 12 min Mega Drive Mortal Kombat: 6 min Sparkster: 5 min Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego: 2 min Worms: 37 min This is part of the stuff I uttered my excitement about last week. I was pretty happy to find Ice Climber, MK, Sparkster and Worms in the wild for a very reasonable price. All the MD/Gen games are CIB and in good condition. I am, however, not all that impressed with Sparkster, which usually seems to be regarded as a superclassic. But I'll give it a few more tries later. Maybe it'll grow on me. I also picked up Rocket Knight Adventures, but couldn't get it to run properly. It's a Genesis game. Most of those run ok on a Mega Drive, but this one's acting up. I picked up an adapter on ebay. We'll see if that'll work... PC (DOS) Historyline 1914-1918: 765 min Meanwhile, I have beaten the 10th of 24 maps of the Allied campaign. 14 maps still to go, among them huge monsters that will take 4-5 hours each... I don't know if and when I can consider this game beat. Edited June 28, 2015 by karokoenig

Seige [Mike Singleton] - 31 min. Not a lot of gaming this week either, at least I'm down to letter S in the sorting of Commodore PET games. Most playable this week was Seige with eliminating 311 soldiers. This is the same game that Singleton later released as Siege (note corrected spelling) for the C64 and IIRC also the VIC-20. Kurt_Woloch
Sorry, no gaming again this week. I was busy rehearsing for a birthday party next Saturday where I'll be playing my keyboard and singing. Apart from that, I had a date at the dentist and another one at the hospital (for examining my eyes), and I've done some optimizations on my VB5 programs (which in itself is kind of a game).
