I'm pretty sure it is just a rom dumper connected to an emulator, so it would need to do bupchip like the 7800 GD.

I've updated the first post's FAQ to cover a few cool new things, such as support for Rikki & Vikki's custom hardware on the 7800 GameDrive (thanks to SainT) and ProSystem-libretro (thanks to Tachi). The latter even supports Retro Achievements, neat!

That would be nice, but it's also largely up to Atari to ensure the 2600+ supports the game. If this sort of thing is important to you (or anyone else reading), please let Atari know you'd like to play Rikki & Vikki on the 2600+ and/or purchase the game from them.

I suspect the 2600+ uses A7800, but that's a bit of a guess since I don't think they've said anything specifically about the emulation platforms.

Just curious, will the ROM that you get from the Steam install work with music on the 7800GD? I see Stone Age Gamer offering it with a 7800GD but they never had them in stock when I could afford them. Got my 7800GD here at AtariAge but would like to play Rikki & Vikki on it, if it doesn't need a special ROM that only Stone Age Gamer has. I have the real cart, so I haven't bought the Steam version, but would for the ROM if I can use it in my cart!

7800GD has no BupChip but you can convert music files to Adpcm format and play game on your cart with music.

Oh I thought it could use its FPGA to simulate bupchip - is what you are describing what the Stone Age Gamer copy is doing?

Yes. Buy the game from Steam for $1.99 It has the rom image. Use the link Eagle posted and you should be good to go.

Bought this on Steam, playing on my MiSTer and LOVING IT.

 

Just sad that there is no music! @TailChao is there any chance of patching this game to support POKEY or TIA music?

Very little, unfortunately. Creating new versions of each track is a big ask, and there's only 2KB or so of fragmented space available in the game's binary. It might be possible to add support for streaming ADPCM data to the MiSTer though, similar to how the 7800 GameDrive handles BupChip support. But I don't have free time for any of this right now.

 

That said, RushJet1 did a few TIA covers of the game's music if you're curious about how it'd actually sound .

I bought Rikki & Vikki on Steam today but can't exactly figure out how to get the ProSystem-libretro core in RetroArch to run it, since it seems to only want to recognize .A78 files. I'm also guessing that foxbox.bin doesn't have the music included, so I was wondering exactly what the procedure is to get Rikki & Vikki running in ProSystem-libretro? Does it need to be converted into a .A78 file with the same program you'd use to it play on the GameDrive?

BupBoopConv command line tool from the BupBoopConv thread creates an A78 file. Does that work?

I absolutely LOVE this game.  Someday, I hope to get the good ending by finding someone willing to play through with me.  Until then, I have to live with getting the ending that calls me an idiot and a moron.  LOL

 

However, I think it's fair to callout the Misery Dragon as a bit of an idiot himself, for the way he screws up the sentence shown in the screenshot above.

 

He should have said "You BOTH were invited on this exclusive trip..."

 

So, it appears, I get the last laugh... for now, Misspoken Misery Dragon.  Muhahaha

Negative.  The word "You" can be used in a singular or plural context and does not require any specific word following it to denote such.

Specifically in this scenario, it serves as a second-person plural pronoun.

Grammatically, the sentence is correct and proper English.

I respectfully disagree.  While perhaps grammatically correct as written, it doesn't convey the intended meaning. When the emphasis is taken into account, the context suggests that the word "both" is missing.

 

Here's a verbatim transcription of what he actually says in the game (including actual emphasis):

It’s good one can extract the ROM

from the Steam version to the GameDrive.

 

But would it be very difficult/time-consuming to have direct R&V 7800 ROM for sale on PenguiNets page…?

Essentially that all conversions from Steam-file type are done by PenguiNet and sold separately.

A bare R&V “ROM” isn’t usable on hardware as-is - it needs to be in .A78 format along with all the necessary sound files. There’s an entire thread about a dead simple tool to just that, and instructions in the 7800GD forum.

7800 newbie here and I did not read every post about this game, but I did “fix” an issue other newbies may also experience.
 

I was getting no music when playing the version that came with the 7800 Game Drive from Stone Age Gamer. Turns out the problem was that I had copied just the .a78 file to another folder as part of me organizing my ROMs, and if I go back to the original ROM inside the folder that was on the SD card when I received the GameDrive it works fine. Must be that it needs to access the other files in that folder and it can’t find them if you move the .a78 file to another folder. So copy the whole folder when you want to organize the ROMs and you’ll be good to go!

 

I also noticed the music does not play when loading a save state, and I’m guessing it can’t work that way based on apparently needing to “stream” the music when using the Game Drive (from what rare bits I’ve read in this thread). So just get good and give yourself enough time to beat it in one sitting or get used to sound effects only!

 

This is a fantastic game and as a new 7800 owner it really blows me away what this developer and other homebrew developers are pulling off with this system. Bravo!
