Good conversion, bad conversion

Wrathchild

Recommended Posts

Following on from the "Favorite 8-Bit Game Never Ported To The Atari Series" and some of the recent C64 vs A8 threads... what were your memories of good and bad game conversions?

Examples:

Spiky Harold - pretty decent game

Druid - great gameplay, graphics a little lacking than the C64s

Chimera - another good job (still haven't beaten it though!).

Arkanoid

Bad:

Black Lamp

Kick Off

I'm interested in seeing the points of view on US titles as I'm not so sure which came first in their development (A8 or c64/Apple)

Good:

Arkanoid - impossible to beat but the colors are great

Ninja - game 99% identical to C64 counterpart

Raid over Moscow - cut-down graphics but very playable

Spindizzy - exactly like the C64 version

Attack of the Mutant Camels - an improvement over the original

Deflektor - excellent port

Airball - very difficult but quite a good job

Average:

Pitstop II - incredibly slow compared to the C64 version

Fight Night - a bit slow

Barbarian - not very playable

Conan - great music but Apple ][ graphics and animation

Demon Attack - identical to the VCS original

Bad:

Green Beret - horrible conversion

Congo Bongo - terrible port

Monkey Magic - worst game ever?

Hey, don't be dissin' The Empire Strikes Back. :P

No, he be dissin' the C64 version of AMC, which does show it's age 'cos Minter coded it without any real hardware reference. One of these days, i'll port the Atari version to the C64... =-)

Aztec Challenge would be a firm contender

Well, Aztec Challenge wasn't incredible but (at least) it had playability..

Yes...but as a conversion, it stinks (it had less in common with the original than 2600 PacMan had with the arcade...if that is possible).

By this way you can create an AOTMC version on the XL that uses it's hardware in a higher level.... ;)

Or should I say in other words, that AOTMC for me looks like crap with DLIs ;)

Can we please stop this arguement and turn our minds to more important issues... like porting Ancipital to the Atari instead? :)

Hmmm,

so let`s vote for the worst game (and conversion): Frenesis !!

other bad + buggy conversions by mastertronic:

- colony (when you order new items, and they arrive, the screen gets filled with garbage...)

- universal hero: no music, uses the keyboard a lot (instead of diferent joystick directions with+out button), the tape version has the codeword-bug: it does not accept the given codeword (you merely can correct this on disk)

- rockford: an average conversion, but the tape includes a bug: level 9 (if I remember correct) could not be solved (there were not enough diamonds to collect...)

- one man and his droid: awful and boring game (but with a few similarities to Lemmings, i.e. you can give 3 different commands to your droid while trying him to get the lemmings/nasties out of the level...); but almost no changes from one level to another...

- amauroute: great graphics, nice sounds; anyone ever finished it ?!? Is it possible to finish it ?!? (25 levels and no save feature nor a level password, etc. etc.)

- there are many more buggy or average mastertronic games (I remember two more games with bugs, but I don`t know their names right now...)
