Super NES/Famicom:

Gon -20 minutes

Death and Return of Superman -30 minutes

Gon was confusing as far as knowing where to go. Death and Return of Superman had way too long of levels and got a little repetitive but seemed fun enough overall. The graphics are good at least. Wonder if it was Blizzard’s idea to put goatmen everywhere?

Week of 4/3/23 - 4/9/23

Commodore 64

Impossible Mission - 120

Lode Runner - 115

Pogo Joe - 15

Zak McKracken - 130

Total time = 380 minutes

I'm continuing my quest to complete games I played a lot of as a kid but never finished. Having recently finished Maniac Mansion, Zak McKracken seemed like a logical next choice. However, when I reached the part where I needed to fly out of the country, I couldn't get the Visa codes to work. I have the original game with the code sheet, but I was playing an emulated version for the sake of convenience. I thought maybe there were different code sheets but the ones I found online were exactly the same so I had to put that game on hold. I tried out some other games that I'd like to try finishing, and even did some modern gaming!

Yesterday I figured out that I was using a cracked version of Zak McKracken that allows you to enter any Visa code except the correct one.

The top four on the overall list are all new since last week, with Ninja Gaiden just over one hour ahead of Kingsley's Adventure. The game which is overall fifth and pre-NES first is no newcomer however, namely Solar Fox. For the fourth week in a row, the NES/Famicom becomes the most played system, this time by a massive margin of 18.5 hours ahead of the PlayStation, Atari 2600 and the others.

No less than three games enter the 1000 Minute Club:

#525 Kingsley's Adventure (PlayStation) - 1060 min.

At the same time, Solar Fox breaks the 50K barrier with a total of 50013 minutes. It still is almost 187K minutes behind Kaboom! of course, but Solar Fox strengthens its position as the second most played game.

Bruce Lee - 72 min.

I didn't yet complete the game, but I reached quite a bit further than I ever did before (Atari and C64 versions combined).

Are there any noticeable differences between the 2 versions?

I can feel after you... I can remember that back in the day, I didn't ever manage to finish even half of the game. Basically, you first grab some lanterns on the surface, then you are allowed to go deeper into the caves, but eventually you return to the surface to find that there's now a path open to the right where you get into the castle... or something like that. Back in the day, I never managed to get back to the surface, I only did it much later when I played the game in emulation.

Anyway... here are my times for this past week (April 10th through 16th) on classic systems (I think I didn't play any modern ones this week)...

Arcade:

Jump Bug - 78 minutes in 6 sessions

I continued to play "Jump Bug" which was the only game I played this week. I'm stuck at the part where two fishes come from the right and shoot at you, and you're trapped in an underwater tunnel. Haven't managed to get past that part...

It was quite a week for classic gaming for me again this week! I did full playthroughs of the original Splatterhouse for the PC Engine and Splatterhouse 2 for the Sega Genesis, and beat them both fair and square with no cheats and no save states! :)

After that I decided to finally try out an English language fan translation of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood for the PC Engine CD-ROM² and was utterly astounded by how amazingly good it was! It had gorgeously detailed pixel art for all the backgrounds and sprites, fantastic orchestral renditions of all the classic Castlevania tunes, fully voice acted anime cutscenes, branching paths through every level with alternate bosses and secret level exits, two very different playable characters for normal and easy difficulty, and just a ton of variety and polish. It just boggles my mind that Rondo of Blood was never released outside of Japan in it's heyday, because if you ask me this is easily the best of all the classic level based style Castlevania games! I don't think Konami put even half as much effort into Super Castlevania IV on the SNES or Bloodlines on the Genesis as they did for Rondo of Blood, you can tell that they really poured everything they had into this game.

I ended up loving Rondo of Blood so much that I spent nearly 10 hours playing it this week, going back and exploring every path through every level, saving all 4 maidens, and beating every boss until I finally got 100% completion! Having now seen and done all there is to do in Rondo of Blood, I can safely say that this is easily my new favorite Castlevania game. I never thought any Castlevania game would top Super Castlevania IV in my book, but Rondo of Blood is just... amazing.

DOS

Bio Menace 36

Pinball Fantasies Deluxe 87

Just a couple DOS titles in my GoG library.  FYI Pinball Fantasies Deluxe seems to just be a release that combines two other pinball titles:  Pinball Fantasies and Pinball Mania.  I considered tracking time separately for the two "sub" games, but then . . . didn't.

Atari 2600

Kaboom! - 133 minutes

Solar Fox - 214 minutes

I didn't get any high scores this week.  I struggled to get past Rack 100 on Solar Fox.  I don't think I ever had more than 3 or 4 extra lives.  Usually I can get all 7 or however many it stores.

Week of 4/10/23 - 4/16/23

Commodore 64

Zak McKracken - 270

Focused on finishing Zak McKracken last week. I got stuck at one point because I ran out of money. Fortunately, I was able to go back to an older saved game and get a winning Lotto ticket but now I'm stuck because I don't know what to do next!
