BigPEmu Jaguar Emulator now supports Jaguar CD and VLM

crash

Recommended Posts

Greetings,

Since this doesn't seem to have hit gaming news very widely, I wanted to make people aware that the BigPEmu Jaguar emulator that is currently available as a Patreon preview build now supports JaguarCD games, Jeff Minter's Virtual Light Machine (with whatever music you play on your computer), and many of the homebrew, demo, and prototype CDs. It is currently being tested by Patrons for bugs and compatibility, and is available now to those who support the author, Rich Whitehouse, on Patreon, and sometime soon with a public release.

I would urge anyone that can, to please offer some support to the Rich so that he may be able to continue developing this project.

If he has enough support, he would like to continue the project with things like the addition of:

  • Developer/debugger-enabled builds (to facilitate homebrew development)
  • Jaguar VR Support (for Missile Command VR on a modern headset)
  • Enhancements to Jaguar games such as additional control options, higher resolution, or higher frame rate

The choice and priority of these will depend on support and the votes of Patreon supporters.

I hope that all Jaguar enthusiasts will consider offering whatever support they are comfortable with so that Rich's Jaguar work can continue.

Thanks for your consideration

I've been a Patreon for a while, and have been trying to get it working with CD images, with zero success.

The Patreon 1.05a release works just fine with cart releases.

When I try to load what I think are valid images (I've tried CDI and CUE images) I see the JagCD BIOS showing a Jag CD logo.  It displays for a moment, blinks, and then cycles.

I'm going to guess that the emulator is fine, and it's just the images I'm using... but I've tried images from several CDs and from more than one download site.

Any tips or tricks that people had to stumble through?  I'm stumped.

There is a site that was posted in the Discord chat that had a few images - most are cue/bin dumps.  I was able to simply attach the .cue file and the images ran.  Make sure you dont have a ROM file set as well.

Unset your JagCD BIOS if you set that up in the Settings.  Seems having the BIOS set could interfere with running the discs

Make sure you have a valid BIOS.  Oddly, most of the retail games do not need a CD BIOS to work, but the VLM of course does, as that's where the VLM code is.  Other than that, didn't have to do any setup - everything just worked.

Also, as with anything that is not working, please check his compatibility page and make sure the hash matches.

Well here ends my interest in BigPEMU. I wanted to play World Tour Racing, and Rich didn't see fit to test his emulator with the only ISO out there for everyone to enjoy for free in the collection of Jag CD images at archive.org. Why he chose to use some version nobody will ever find I will never know.

It is not on any of the other sites that have Jag CD individual ISO. Disappointed.

What problem are you having? The main things are that you have to have a JaguarCD BIOS selected, set a Virtual disc as your sound card/device, and press Play in the VLM so it thinks a CD is playing and listens to the music.

I made a video demonstration showing how I set it up.

There are two versions of World Tour Racing on archive.org that do work. If you are using one that does not work, it is because whoever made it did not dump it correctly so it is incomplete and won't (or shouldn't) work in a Jaguar CD either. There are some collections where some of the discs work, and others do not. This is not because of the emulator, this is because of bad files on the Internet.

I would not try to use ISO files. ISO files do not contain all of the information that is contained on a Jaguar CD. The file formats that work are BIN/CUE and CDI. Redump images are in BIN/CUE, while DiscJuggler images are CDI.

I hope that helps

Rude much?  "How dare this man dying from cancer not put out software the way I want!"

Entitled much? How about showing a little respect for someone putting out free software that has advanced Jaguar emulation immensely in a short period of time? Grow up.

Odd...  I just upgraded from the Patreon release to the official 1.05 release... and the images that wouldn't load previously work just fine now!

I don't know what's different, but I'll take it!  Thank you Rich, for putting out this great emulator!

It was already noted above, but I think it bears repeating: For games that are still available retail, please support those keeping the Jaguar scene alive. World Tour Racing can be purchased here:

https://songbird-productions.com/product/world-tour-racing-cd/

and here:

https://atariage.com/store/index.php?l=product_detail&p=1088

As can many other fine Jaguar games. Just because there's an awesome free emulator out now doesn't mean it's suddenly OK to pirate all the games. I understand for games that are out of print, while still illegal, it's more of a moral gray area (I personally think "pirating" abandonware is fine. Laws are stupid sometimes.), but for games still in print, just buy a copy. Even if you download it too because you don't have a CD-ROM drive anymore, buy one anyway to properly compensate the authors and/or publishers.

So, now that you all have your legal copy of WTR, be sure to set blitter speed to "free" and disable pipeline emulation in BigPEmu to see it running at silky smooth framerates. It's already a great game IMHO, and that makes it even better.
