ON BUBSY....

Hey all, looks like you are all doing good with the level 1 challenge.   So, see what you can do to collect all the items and get the highest score.

I only did mine as an example of what is possible.

I hope to try for an overall high score before this over.  :D

I've been running out of time...

44,038 points, 383 balls.

Nice score though!   Great to see you all digging into Bubsy.  You learn so much from the game on the first level.   I remember learning to jump on those tiny mid-air mushrooms and thought I would never master those.

Interesting fact, the levels were developed out of order.   Ali-Baba was the original world 1, but development on Alice went so well several worlds in that it was switched for the opening level.  That is why Ali Baba seems to much easier than the Alice levels and boss.

So suffice to say, if you can master the first level you've got a lot of the skills needed for this game.

----------------------------------------------

So while you are all mastering the first level (a big deal as quite a few never master or finish the first level so congrats to all you who now can) I've been off on safari, exploring all the nooks and crannies of the game.

On replays of the game I'm finding I should have kept playing when I had that 121K and 794 balls on the first level!   Best I've done since is about 115K and 792 balls.   The highest amount of balls recorded is 801 by Robert R.

20230429_005152.jpg.9892f6c12b0543751be5a753d671aba7.jpg

2nd level the 903 balls matches what Robert R was able to find.

20230429_011917.jpg.b578c659efc4de03fa2d6caec1e80e5f.jpg

Third level I had 728 balls.   One less than Robert R's record of 729.

20230429_015353.jpg.2a54ff768e88fe31a5a53e3930b7a81a.jpg

Fourth level was a real grind.   419 compared to 456 found by Robert R.  Some room for improvement there.

20230429_023715.jpg.43a9502dda4eb4ee419fbaea7b99ba83.jpg

Fifth level 649 balls... survey says... ding...  652 found by Robert R.

20230429_032407.jpg.7aae53fdd3fc89e1d4f3b1d53aefd2c4.jpg

Sixth level Robert R had 1,029 balls, and today I am able to add 1,309 balls!  :D   There has been a lot learned about the sixth level in the past few years.

So that said, continuing to play this and shoot for the high score.  At the very least going safari like this has been like playing a all new game.   I normally speedrun past most of the levels.  :P

That's why I love the HSC. I play 8bit, Lynx and Jag, not to win the rounds but to (re-)discover new and old games.

I've played Bubsy in the 90s, but I never passed the two guys playing with their yoyos. Now I had a good motivation to learn how to do so.

Oh and there's fall damage. Because of course there is

Bubsy... faster than Sonic, as fragile as early nineties Mario.

It's like that old question "What power would you like?"   Someone says "I'd like to be able to fly".  Wish granted.   First hard landing person pancakes. :P

Wrapping up my three day Bubsy safari....

(Would play for hours, pause, play more, etc.  My poor Jag, I don't do this often.)

Level 7: 509 balls. (Robert R) and 506 here.

Level 9: 791 balls. (Robert R) and same here.

Level 10: 1,095 balls. (Robert R) and 1,040 here.

Level 11: 1,315 balls. (Robert R) and 1,311 here.

Level 12: 1,332 balls. (Robert R) and 1275 here.

Level 13: 1,168 balls. (Robert R) and 1147 balls here

20230430_124510.jpg.b73a177d596dc03b28afd2953c9121f7.jpg

Level 14: 721 balls. (Robert R) and 622 balls here.

20230430_200257.jpg.93b60f4b99a164705d576fc4eafaa42e.jpg

Level 15: 893 balls. (Robert R) and I believe it said 693 balls here before it flickered over to let me enter my name...

At the end of it all, between the balls collected here, and Robert R, he is only 14 balls ahead of what I collected.

Robert R, person who collected the most balls to date, said he could get a little over a 1.2 million score.  So that seems to be the ball park he found was between a million to a million and a half is more the practical maximum.

My last score in 2009 was 1,151,654 and I was just going with my practice knowledge.   Current score of 1,343,261 this time I had level maps to help in tracking down items, as well as speed run experience to get the more points for time.   And I believe with another run, getting my numbers closer to what Robert R had, using more of the speed run techniques for time points, I could push that score up to around the 1.5 million area.

So the high score of 2,195,810 was great for how we more loosely played in 2008 and 2009 (scoring whatever we could in what the game allowed, making use of flaws and all) but I believe and submit  that 1,343,261, based on maps made of the game levels and Robert R's numbers, is the best reported score so far with our current rules of play in 2023.

Score submitted is done so earning score from enemies and collecting items on the level along with time points.

There was no point farming used per the 2023 rules.   (such as the level 3 continue loop, or the level 13-15 "Pie stomping" farming method.)

------

Wanted to give Biopede another go but ran out of time.

And since I came up with a level 1 challenge for new Bubsy players, I have a prize for the top level 1 player.  :D

Yes---apologies, I'm in Tampa on business and have been flat out.  Will get this updated ASAP tomorrow!

EDIT:  The round is now complete, congrats to @doctorclu on the win and @jeremiahjt on second place for Bubsy.  Doc Clu I think it's safe to say you are the best ever player of Bubsy for Jaguar, incredible score.

Congrats to @Madwindoman for your win on Biopede, and incredible score also!

I'll update the HSC records and get the next round up ASAP.  THANKS FOR PLAYING!

Would like to thank all who tried the first level challenge and hopefully you feel more at ease with this game and will explore more in the future!

Also congrats to Jeremiahjt on getting the top first level high score!   You have a Bubsy Blockbuster card heading your way!
