Yamari OPL3 FM Cartridge(YMF262) - FM sound standard

Hello friends.

 

X-Angel made 10x OPL3 FM cartridge (YM262) based on T0RI design(I had 10x OPL3 and Yamaha DAC at home and He did PCBs and IC, assembly, soldering).

OPL3 was in Soundblaster16 that typical "Doom" sound.

 

How it sounds?

 

MONO did RAD player that plays modules from Reality Adlib Tracker(PC and MAC).

But there are also Adlibtracker2 and Furnace Tracker and others capable of OPL3.

 

In ATARI arcade machines(YM2151) also in ATARI Jaguar was FM soundchip so its OK

as Yamaha OPL3 is very very similar also same company did them.

 

 

I will give 1x to VinsCool and 1x to GMG team who made FPS game. And there are still few available.

Will write also on RMT / Atari discord too.

 

As You know on C64 they have FMyam by XENTAX group and on MSX2/TurboR they have opl4 MOONSOUND.

So ATARI should have FM too and support YAMARI on future demoparties or music compos, games, demos, intros, trackers too.

RAD modules latter maybe ADT2 adlibtracker modules too(was made in turbopascal player in madpascal is possible) so we will

have PSG-POKEY and FM-OPL3 category/soundchip.

I can imagine soundFX will be on POKEY and melody on FM. Or Rapidus demo with 18channels soundtrack :D.

Or 3D game. Something similar to Japanese MSX2 computers or Atari Jaguar, Sega Megadrive/Genesis FM+psg soundsystem.

Yogi(VAN) was developing it. I want also thank Yogi. He fixed few old Yamari stuff in His schemes and it helped.

Mytek what about mATX Atari but with:

2x pokey socket (or even 4x pokey quad)

1x covox(samples)

1x dreamblaster socket + midi ports(midicar like)

1x build in Opl3(Yamari)

Build in good(not overpriced hifi but still very good) amplifier(audio capacitors)

VBXE for graphics(lotharek)

Rapidus 65c816 as CPU(lotharek)

1x pc fan connector(rgb)

USB(ps/2) keyboard and mouse(amiga/st mouse)

SD-Card (sddrive 32gb version)

Build in fujinet

XE/Xl Cartridge port

Bus(pbi/exp like) 1x pci like slot for future cards expansion

 

Something best of best from 800 platform.

Atari ST fans have Falcon030(with 060).

Amiga fans Amiga4000(with 060).

MSX fans have TurboR (R800 risc and fm).

Apple2 fans have Apple2GS(65c816, 4096 colors, Ensoniq soundchip)

NES fans have SNES(65C816).

 

So we will have Apple2GS like Atari XL/XE but 16bit using latest peripherials. I think if Atari will choose 65c816 instead of 68k there will be like it!

I would like to build one but Q1 and D1 are not identified on the schematic - can you advise what their specs are?

also in your image, the oscillator is not fitted. is it optional?

He disappeared from the 1088XEL Beta Group PM, never responded to any personal PMs, and basically never finished it as far as I know. If he did finish it, he never shared it with our group, nor have I seen anything announced as such on the Atariage forums.

 

However I did see this posted in the 1088XEL Builders Thread by @rj1307, which is his take on it based on the original design by tOri. Maybe this is the one you were thinking of.

@rj1307 made it as an accessory to plug into the 1088XEL Cart-Adapter board he came up with.

No thats just rendering from KiCad. Need be fitted but will ask authors.

 

@mytek - It was just idea after seeing Commander X16 board(PC like board but 6502). Idea for 2024 / 2025 or so. BTW I have Your 1088XEL and love it. Also original A130XE/1mb. 

 

All - tomorrow will do FM cart photos. And latter video playing tunes.

For info, i got a response from the author about the 2x unidentified components:

 

Q1 is 14.318 and D1 is 1N4148

You have to solder only one version of clock: QG1 or QG2 or 74HCU04 (with R8,C17, C19, C30, Q1), but not all of them because they all are doing the same.

IC2 must be HCU version so maybe easier way will be just to buy 14.318 generator

So generally:

- option 1 of clock is to solder QG1 in smaller case - 14.318MHz

- option 2 is to solder QG2 in bigger case - 14.318MHz

- option 3 is to solder IC2 with R8, C17, C19, C20 and Q1 (14.318MHz)

Depends of what parts will be easy to buy.

Don't know what I/O area is using on the bus, but it would be great to see an identical version, but interfacing on the RIGHT cartridge port, which is readily available in every single 800 out there in the wild. It can be left plugged permanently.
