ball
Hello. I've been struggling for days trying to get an old game, The Attack, to run in an emulator. I did manage to get it to run in Classic99, but because I have to run it in a windows emulator it runs horribly (an emulator in an emulator). I've since been trying to get it to work with MAME of which I have a couple native builds (Mac, Arm64). I did manage to import this into MAME4mac and it DOES work, but only has breakout and pong: http://ftp.whtech.com/System ROMs/MAME/ti99_complete.zip I then attempted to add this cart, but it complains it doesn't know what system to run it on: https://ftp.whtech.com/Cartridges/MAME/rpk/the_attack.rpk Has anyone here had success with MAME or could point me in the right direction? ball
Well, heck, I guess I'll answer my own question (in case anyone else gets stuck). Apparently I don't want the rpk but rather the games in this repository: https://ftp.whtech.com/Cartridges/MAME/zip/

I don't see a software tab. Interestingly, this also works with attack.zip but not jawbreaker.zip
+mizapf
./mame ti99_4a -cart jawbreak works for me. But note that the zip file is named "jawbreak.zip".
globeron
@ball also check out the Retrobat forum (or Batocera), it is a front end of emulstation, but it uses Mame64 as emulator and easier to load games (and all .rpk in the file are working). ball
So, in case there is anyone else who ends up in the same boat as me, I did find a solution that actually works really well. You have to do a little finagling to get Ti-99 running, however: 1) Download MAME4Mac 2) Select "Import..." from the file menu and import the Ti-99 package 3) While SOME roms are automagically recognized as Ti-99 (I'm unsure by what magic), some do not. To get Jawbreaker working I had to manually insert jawbreak.zip in the correct folder which is ~/Library/Containers/com.example.mame4ios/Data/Documents/roms/ti99_cart (for some reason Finder presents the 'com.example.mame4ios' folder as 'MAME4Mac'. You can also use command-shift-G and paste this pathname as a quick way to get to it). 4) Energy Saver has a high and low power mode which I believe prioritizes high vs low efficiency cores as well as perhaps ramping up the CPU speed. You need to be on high power mode which is in the battery setting (at least on Ventura) or else the audio will sound frazzled. With high power mode, the emulation is flawless! This app also works well with my PS5 controller.
+mizapf
The ZIP files should be found when you place them in the "rompath", see mame.ini. The Magic is the file hash/ti99_cart.xml. What is MAME4Mac? What MAME release is it?
Golden Child
I was reading this thread and saw that he was having problems with jawbreak.zip, I downloaded it from the link above at: https://ftp.whtech.com/Cartridges/MAME/zip/ but it looks like there's a wonky filename inside https://ftp.whtech.com/Cartridges/MAME/zip/jawbreak.zip phm3194g3.zip inside that zip should be phm3194g3.bin You might try these builds of mame for macos: https://sdlmame.lngn.net/

+mizapf
Seems as if it were at release 0.250, quite a while back. Except for TIPI support, I did not add new features for the TI since then.
ball
Does MAME support emulating the speech synth? It's not a huge deal for me except I used to own one. I tried a couple command line options but it doesn't appear to work. Maybe the ROM pack needs something extra?
+mizapf
mame ti99_4a -ioport peb -ioport:peb:slot3 speech -cart exbasic In Extended Basic, try CALL SAY("HELLO"). As for the scope of emulation, see also https://www.ninermame.org/info/scope
Golden Child
I was trying to get the miner 2049er cartridge running on mame and the ti99_4a driver and noticed that it wouldn't run unless I activated the "Console 32 KiB RAM Upgrade (16 bit)" in the Machine Configuration or added the 32K with -ioport peb -ioport:peb:slot2 32kmem It runs great, just wondered why it needs the 32k expansion? Does it have to do with miner 2049er being a cartridge that plugs into the expansion slot vs the cartridge slot?

Many carts were designed to use the 32k expansion, such as the EA cart, originally there was a side car 32k unit made by TI, then the PEB box version, now we have a multitude of options for 32k. Golden Child
Hmmm, searched on "Tigervision ti99" and it says on the wikipedia page under games: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TI-99/4A Quote Tigervision offered a solution to the memory limitation of the standard cartridge slot in the form of a 24 KB memory expansion cartridge that attached to the side expansion interface, emulating an expansion device. This allowed the company to implement a larger game completely in machine code, which was used for Espial and Miner 2049er. Exceltec also released two similar side cartridges: Arcturus[40] and Killer Caterpillar. Edited March 17 by Golden Child

RickyDean
I would suggest that if this is still about using the cartridge in Mame, that it be continued in the Mame thread:
