For Smurfs, we dumped out a few bytes with a laborious process, and we confirmed it differs from the publicly available dump. That's the only reason we're confident we're dealing with a problem variant. Right. The positive thing here is that if it is problem variant it doesn't seem to be a widely owned one, I only recall the one other owner saying they had an issue with this game, and who knows perhaps they just had a duff cart, or perhaps they had the same hardware as me, but this one I have is 100% functional on OG hardware so something is going on here. I’m guessing it won’t, but if it helps to do a visual inspection I am willing to damage the label, open it up and take some photos. swiller
I am having trouble upgrading to r3. I successfully upgraded to r2. The device manager is not seeing 2600+. other devices >> unknown device does not show. Switch set to color, held down game reset while powering up. I was able to get past the dumper step. Please help! Thank you in advance. NEVERMIND I GOT IT! LEAVING THIS HERE IF OTHERS GET STUCK If you have performed an update before you can skip this step. 2600+ will not show up in device manager as an unknown device. The contacts are immaculately clean, there are reflections/shadows in the photo, but yeah it's super shiny and clean, there is no black on them at all. Low light, apologies it's not as sharp as I'd like. The cart is missing it's end label, has a crappy front label, doesn't work on the Plus and I have other carts anyway so I didn't mind doing this, although the chip isn't exposed sadly. Hope it may give a little clue at least. I can take clearer pics tomorrow if needed. I am pretty sure that is REV E and the other numbers seem legible enough. I am running the r3 debug version and all games are running at 60fps unless otherwise noted. I was running stock firmware. Update process to this version was 15 minutes and that includes the time it took to download all the files. Working for me: 7800 Galaga Robotron:2048 Asteroids Centipede Dig Dug Donkey Kong Donkey Kong Jr (needed to try several times) Joust (needed to try several times) Kareteka (But I can only move right and I can’t figure out how to attack) Tower Toppler Xevious 2600 Amidar (needed to try several times) Battlezone Bermuda Triangle Berserk BMX Breakout Canyon Bomber (I need to read the instructions. Controls seem quite limited) Casino Centipede Circus Coconuts Combat Crossbow (I need to read the instructions. LOL) Dark Chambers Demon Attack Dessert Falcon Dig Dug Defender Dodger Cars Kaboom Lost Luggage Mega Force Mega Mania Midnight Magic Millipede Missile Command Moon Patrol Mouse Trap Name This Game Night Driver (I think has controller Issues, Or I don’t know how to play) Outlaw Pac-Man Phoenix Panky the Panda Pitfall II (needed to try several times) Solaris (works but I really need to read the instructions, cause I forgot how to play) Yars Revenge Games I need to test more (I could not get to work, but might just need more cleaning) 7800 None 2600 Airlock Atlantis Bugs Carnival Chopper Command Kool-Aid Man Smurfs - Save the Day Most that did not work would not load or only gave a black screen with no debug details after loading. Thats only about half my collection. But my wife wanted the iPad back. LoL. I will try to get to the other half of my collection later this weekend! Great job folks. I think this is an excellent example of what can be done by a helpful and healthy community. Same cart worked without issue under Atari 2600 4-switch 'Woody' consoles and 7800 consoles. Cleaned the cart. (Q-tip x2 and 91% Isopropyl Alcohol). This time recognized cart - though only saw 8K, and the bankswitching/mapper incorrect. Cleaned the cart again (Q-tip x2 and 91% Isopropyl Alcohol). Works perfectly now. On 5/24/2024 at 4:17 PM, shane857 said: Pitfall 2 does not work EVERY time for me also. I thought at first it might be the dumper...probably the cartridge slot thou. Inserting the cart at a lower angle seems to make it boot(for me)more often. Works every time on my original VCS. To be clear on this item, whether it is Pitfall II or any other cart in which I experienced non-working results at first, for a title that is known to work, after the cart is *truly* thoroughly cleaned, I then receive consistent working results every time. This has been the case with several cartridges, including games from Atari (Basketball and Crystal Castles), third party titles from Activision (Barnstorming, Grand Prix, River Raid), Parker Brothers (Reactor, Star Wars - Jedi Arena), among others. For better or worse, depending on perspective, the original consoles, whether the 2600 or 7800, seem to have a higher 'tolerance' for functioning with 'dirty' cartridges. The 2600+ tends to need a very clean cartridge PCB. For extra finicky carts (evidently dirtier than typical aged PCB contacts), it sometimes requires a few to several additional, up and down scrubbing motions with a Q-tip and 91% Isopropyl Alcohol on the cartridge PCB contacts. Going side-to-side, left and right motion, with the swab is not good enough. It is well worth the effort though, because once the respective PCB contacts are very thoroughly cleansed, that once fickle to work cartridge, is consistently perfect working with the 2600+. I will likely have my test results for both 7800 and 2600 cartridge titles posted within the next day or two.
tradyblix
I am beginning to wonder if this is another reason for the replacement of the socket in subsequent 2600+ production runs, besides the fact the current one has additional teeth. I've had a lot of success with the https://www.1upcard.com/ tho. It doesn't shed cotton like a q-tip does and it seems to clean them better. It "feels" like once I get em cleaned and start using them often they stay good tho. Edited May 26 by tradyblix

It now freezes when hitting reset or pressing the fire button to start a game at the title screen. I recall the prototype does some tricky/odd communication with TIA and/or RIOT that is normally not present for other 7800 games. Nonetheless, picked up the win with CPS Diagnostic working beautifully with this public release. Two additional notes: 1) All cartridges tested were NTSC. 2) If seeing different results from mine, and not an already known issue with a hardware variant, I strongly recommend cleaning those cart edge connectors *very* thoroughly. It does not matter if it is clean enough to work under an O.G. 2600 consoles or 7800 system, it may not be clean enough for the 2600+. Utilizing both sides of several Q-tips saturated in 91% isopropyl alcohol was thankfully not very common; however, it was not extremely rare either. Many of the 2600 carts are ~35-45 years old, and unless they are your originals, well-maintained, (like) new, they may need a good cleaning. Some carts I have acquired throughout the years listed as 'very good', and granted were cleaned up pretty decently, still had some history 'build-up' left on them. Even carts I thought I cleaned pretty well before, the 2600+ helped me appreciate were not as cleaned-up as I presumed. 5

If you have the factory installed firmware or the first upgraded firmware you can. But I believe it may only be the Hyperkin Ranger controller paddle that works. Any firmware upgrade after that won’t work. The paddles won’t respond correctly from the front DB9 ports. I use the OTG micro usb to usb cable with the 2600 daptor II on my Retron 77. Thats why it amazes me that you are able to use paddles directly with the Atari 2600+. And they work great!
