If I didn't know any better, besides some bug fixes and stuff like that, I might consider this a mostly-finished game. I'm guessing the ending has yet to be implement. The "WE GIVE UP" screen iirc.

There are still a few bugs and missing features.

No, it has been implemented:

So, I played a bit of this. The game itself looks impressive, the plane sprites are good and the controls works well too. However the game is extremely repetitive, at the point of being unplayable after a while. I don't know how it is on the arcades, but the Atari version would need a few adaptations to alliviate the sameness of these stages.

The best way to improve this in my opinion is putting the Boss battle between three or four rounds instead of waiting so many time to appear. Switching back between the two gameplay mechanics more often would help to avoid the boredom imo.

Where are the most recent NTSC and PAL versions. The most recent mention of them (page 12) directs to the very first post, but that only has the very first version?

The newest version is not in the first post of the thread, but in my first post here:

Just want to say firstly how excellent this conversion has been done, absolutely love it! At first I was playing it via emulation with stella but the other day put it on a harmony cart. It runs off the cart but using the same ROM (the latest PAL one) on the real hardware results in some of the sounds missing (the whistles that accompany gameplay for example). It seems very strange I know, but is this a known problem between this game and some versions of harmony (mine is at least 7 years old I think), or could there be a issue with my console?

Check your console switches. The background music in game can be muted by setting the left difficulty switch of the 2600 to "A".
