Tiger game.com

Recommended Posts

The game.com had so much potential to be the do all tool for cheap (back when palm and similar devices were several hundred to a $1000+)

Oh the Palm Pilots... I was almost sold on one when I seen one that had Sim-City pre-programmed into it back in 2000-2001.

I remember when 2001: A Space Odyssey was still a dream back in 1989-90... now it's nostalgic... depressing almost....

My favorite game on it is Tiger Casino. Scrabble is a close second. Yeah, I'm weird like that. I just wish people could tinker around for the game.com like they did with another non-selling handheld: The LeapFrog Didj. Hackers got a Game Boy Advance emulator to play on it. The least a game.com could do is have a Game Boy emulator on it.

But I want a homebrew game.com game so badly! I would pay a lot for it! But in order for a game.com homebrew to be published (and let me know if I'm wrong), someone has to figure out what chips to use, and how to get the game on to a chip, like they do with 2600 or any other cartridge-based homebrews. And as far as I know, nobody has even done THAT yet. :(

Didn't know they actually made a modem for it.

I have the communications cartridge kit and used it with a Hayes modem. It wasn't even capable of handling any local BBS. It did work for accessing the local library computer to search for books. It was a novelty that lasted about 15 minutes. I think the kit was on clearance for $5 bucks.

New questions.

1. Do any of the games use the C and D buttons? I bet the fighting games do, but I don't like fighting games so I'm not about to check.

2. Were any of the games reviewed in any magazine? Or were they just too horrible?

3. Why won't anyone program a homebrew game for this system? If people can do N-Gage and Pokemon Mini and other stuff that didn't fare so well, why not the game.com? Is it really because nobody likes it?

According to DP's rarity guide, Castlevania was also planned, along with Madden NFL 99, and a whole bunch of other games that we sadly never got to see.

There were a bunch of noteworthy games planned. Metal Gear Solid was another, I'm pretty sure NBA Hang-Time was one as well. Likely they would have all been crap, but still..

There are two major issues with the Game.com, and that's extreme motion blur, which is common for portable systems of that era, and low frame rates in the games. Unfortunately, because it's a somewhat specialized screen, I'm not sure how practical it would be to put in a modern screen that would eliminate the former issue like on many other handhelds, e.g., Lynx, Game Gear, Nomad, Turbo Express, etc., and the latter seems endemic to the system.
