The Official NEO-GEO Thread!

Always tend to roll my eyes ? at quotes such as "One of, if not THE, most expensive console ever made when adjusted for inflation." There is quite a lot of exchangeable Arcade system in the 80's and 90's that was worth more then people's cars that was somewhat converted to hook up to a TV. This is one reason a lot of Neo Geo treads go nuclear as the AES and its attempt to go affordable with the Neo Geo CD wasn't that far off when you compare it with related systems built by Fujitsu, Namco, Taito , and Capcom.

For example here is some present day Game systems for the rich.

https://www.therichest.com/luxury/driving-simulators-the-10-most-expensive-on-the-market/

Not that you are not right, there were plenty of systems more expensive than the AES or the MVS, but there is a very big difference between a device that was never intended for home use  but i can somehow get it hooked to a TV (or just make room somewhere in the house ?) to a product that actually is designed to be connected to a TV, so i think the AES fits the bill perfectly as one of the most expensive consoles ever (i guess the Laser Active and the CPS Changer must be up there too) even if way more expensive arcade systems or computers were available at the time (i mean, just the NeoGeo MVS and its games were way more expensive than the AES equivalent).

Related to this, i remember reading about the Daytona USA arcade in a Spanish magazine and they mentioned that SEGA was surprised because a good bunch of the units produced were beign bought by individuals, so, yeah, if you had the money, you could aim way higher than the AES.

Quite a few game system even in it generation were close or the same as AES price on consoles. Nintendo DD64 as you had to have a 200 dollar N64 plus play around $300 per year for rental service from Randnet.

Saturn was $400, Video encoder Card $150 if playing some Japanese titles.

Plus these two would be higher if you added rumble paks, memory cards, ram expansion which were needed for a lot of games and a second controller.

FM Towns Marty,  3DO, and Philips CDi was 700 dollars or above.

So the AES console wasn't that expensive for it time, just that the games were roughly 5 times as much.

No matter how you cut it, the AES was expensive. The most expensive console ever? Maybe not, but it's certainly up there... but if a Saturn user somehow needed to buy the Video CD decoder, the arcade stick, the expansion RAM, the memory cartridge, 8 extra controllers for Bomberman, the modem and the driving wheel... i guess that expecting that a AES user actually bought some games is not asking too much ? and that's the problem, as you say, the games were super expensive.

The console was expensive, the games were expensive, the accessories were expensive... Expending lots of cash with the NeoGeo was not optional, it was the minimum expected! ?

Don't forget the Mission Stick. I actually have one of those! Even now it's still the second best way to play After Burner II. Even if you have the arcade PCB (which sells for like $3,000 USD or so), you still need the moving cabinet for the full experience, so you might as well just play it on the Saturn with the Mission Stick if you don't have the cabinet.

Anyway, SNK store is dead now. Sadness.

It's a blast! After Burner is a very physical game when played with the Mission Stick. Unfortunately, most of those deluxe cabinets have been disassembled and parted out over the years.

Why is the SNK Online shop closing? Hopefully just because they're setting up a newer one?

Hi Zoyous,

Unfortunately SNK never went into detail on why they were closing the Online shop. I'm thinking like what you mention that they will create a better version in the future. I did find the official letter from them on what they said.

Anyway, SNK store is dead now. Sadness.

After checking some pictures and information I'm sure i had seen it before, but i wasn't really aware about it, at first I thought that maybe you were talking about the Twin Stick.

Too bad i didn't get the chance to play After Burner II (arcade) with the special cabinet, it was available in a couple of arcade centers and played it a bunch of times but it was the vanilla version, mostly a normal arcade cabinet with a flight stick.

Since After Burner II has been mentioned, i can't recommend enough the Sega Ages 3D version  for 3DS (and all the other Super Scaler games available in the collection), the 3D effect is superb.

Probably is most expensive, when you factor in the game prices, but hardware alone no.  Those idiots at the 3DO company felt that $700 was a good price for their console, Trip tripped up on that one.  The games though were like $40-50 a pop, not $200+.

The 3DO console had a problem that consoles usually don't have and it was that the companies producing the console (Panasonic and Goldstar that i can think of) didn't get any money from the sale of games, so any profit they got had to be from the sale of the console and accordingly the price had to be higher.

Yeah, it's a real pity that the SNK online store closed down, i got to buy a few items, including the best keyring ever with Mai doing the "Nippon Ichi!" animation in 3 frames ?, hopefully those and new items will be readily available at other stores. My take is that maybe the new owners decided that the store was a waste of money ?, but who knows.

Hi guys,

Rumour: Datamine Reveals Six More Neo Geo Pocket Games Potentially Coming To Switch

Including two never-before-localised titles

The King Of Fighters Battle De Paradise Image: SNK

Last week, we got the surprise Switch release of the Neo Geo Pocket Color's Biomotor Unitron — the system's first RPG. Biomotor Unitron joins the likes of Big Bang Pro Wrestling, SNK Gals' Fighters, and Samurai Shodown! 2 (among many others) on the system in representing the classic handheld console. And it seems like Neo Geo fans could be in luck as there may well be many more classic titles on the way.

One of our readers — Durrdevil — got in touch after looking at Biomotor Unitron's files and discovering something pretty interesting hidden inside. Within the game, there's a file listing all the other Neo Geo Pocket Color games so far released, plus some others. Some have already been released elsewhere, like Dark Arms: Beast Buster 1999 (which is on the Neo Geo Pocket Selection Vol.1) and Crush Roller (which is part of the Steam release of Vol.1). But there are six more games that haven't been announced and are yet to have seen a rerelease.

Here's a screengrab of the files, as sent to us by Durrdevil.

Manual Image: Durrdevil

There's plenty to get excited about here, but the six titles mentioned are:

  • Baseball Stars Color
  • Ganbare Neo Poke-Kun
  • The King of Fighters: Battle de Paradise
  • Neo Geo Cup '98 Plus
  • Pocket Tennis Color
  • Falselei!

These six games have never seen a rerelease before; Falselei! was also never released in North America, only coming out in Japan and the UK. What's more, Ganbare Neo Pokekun and The King of Fighters: Battle de Paradise have never been released outside of Japan before!

Battle de Paradise is a board game spin-off (not quite Mario Party, as it's only 1v1) set in the King of Fighters universe, and Ganbare Neo Poke-Kun is a simulation game where you observe a little guy called Neo Poke-Kun, make sure he's happy with some interesting guests, and play minigames with him. He even became the mascot for the system until the end of the Pocket Color's life!

Of course, just because the file names are hidden inside Biomotor Unitron, doesn't mean that we'll be getting any of the games at all, let alone new localisations for two quirky 22-year-old titles. So take this with a pinch of salt. The two Japanese-only titles might also only be released in Japan, or some of the other titles might not come to Switch — as Crush Roller is still listed as Vol.1 despite it never making it onto the Switch release. Still, we can hope, right?

Thanks again to Durrdevil for the tip! Are there any Neo Geo Pocket Color games you'd like to see get a rerelease on Switch that aren't already available? Are you a fan of any of the above games listed? Let us know in the usual spot.

I hope it doesn't mean the vol.2 will be only released in Japan and only the games that were localized will be available as single purchases in the West, but I wouldn't be surprised if that's what happens. ?

Same here roots. I hope not. But in the meanwhile, I have my fingers crossed. ?
