It Will Soon Be Time...

Recommended Posts

I just want every homebrew to be thoroughly tested, polished, and made as good as it can possibly be -- and then, a little bit better than that -- before it ships. When I start reading on a regular basis about major bugs and missing features in homebrews for any system, I get grumpy.

That's the only rush I'm concerned about. Two games a year that ship with major bugs is two too many; ten games that ship with terrific gameplay and complete polish is exactly the right number. And rigorous testing doesn't have to take forever -- it can be done on a tight timeline, as Piggy Bank proves.

Yeah alot of Colecovision and an Intellivision brew or two have bugs of some sort or other issues sadly .

Amen to that. Squash those bugs and polish 'em up more first, I can wait. ;)

cmart is also a customer. So what happens when he's right (because he's a customer), but he disagrees with you? Is it just barely possible that there could be two customers, who have entirely different opinions on release schedules? Could they both be right?

Nah. That'd lead to dogs and cats living together.

I like both puppies and kitties. :)

Completely agree.

Piggy Bank may be considered an exception because the testing was concentrated in such a short time that momentum could be kept alongside development. The problem many home-brews have, as a labour of love, is that the time-scales may be much more sparse. This leads to premature testing efforts, in which testers run the risk of losing steam by the time the game finally is ready for shipping. Consequently, bugs can slip through unnoticed.

This happened particularly on my game, where beta-testing started almost a year before the game was ready. It was great in that a small set of volunteers provided feedback that resulted in shaping the final game-play. However, the bad side of it was that, by the time everything was put together (almost a year later), going through the motions of play-testing the entire game over and over, felt more like a mechanical chore, and even I myself fell into a rut that blinded me from potential issues.

Not to mention that most volunteers were not able to sustain their attention or commitments for so long, reducing the testing surface.

Also consider that proper testing -- a specialised discipline in itself -- may not be widely available to the home-brew community, and that the efforts may not be as rigorous and as systematic as expected in commercial software. Such are the limitations of a niche community requesting commitments from volunteers.

I agree that games should be properly tested before release, but I also understand that the efforts may not be perfect.

When this group was younger..... Multiple releases were no problem. ;)

Oysters for everyone!

That's because the releases were slower-paced.

Hey, you're brave to admit that, though it's unusual to develop that problem later in life. Still, if you're having a problem with releases that are too fast-paced, try thinking about Winston Churchill.
