The game is about catching apples and the correct name in English is SCRUMPER. From Collins dictionary: scrump - in British English - verb( dialect ) to steal (apples) from an orchard or garden ti99iuc- are you able to amend? The source code we have contains: 10 REM *************** 20 REM * STRUMPER***** 30 REM *************** 40 REM 50 REM 60 REM TI&EXTENDED BASIC 70 REM 80 REM (C) LANTERN SOFTWARE 90 REM so this is the reason why @ti99iuc classified the game with such name. Not all names in games must necessarily have a meaning related to the game object and not all people are necessarily British English mother tongue... So, today we have learned the verb "to scrump", although "old-fashioned informal" accordingly to Cambridge dictionary and perhaps also not so useful for every day use, expecially if you are in a city. The periphrasis "steal fruit from trees" is able to express the same concept even though not so refined. Anyway, here is the game "Scrumper", instead of the severely incorrect "Strumper". The binary code is the same, of course. blackbox
I would surmise that someone typed it in from the magazine and didn't quite get the name right. The best known use of scrump is probably SCRUMPY - now used commercially but originally a farm-made extra strong (fully brewed so very dry) cloudy and very rough (make you very unwell type) of Cider (an English apple wine which was originally quite strong- scrumpy was the strongest). Today you can buy Scrumpy cider from Amazon (UK anyway) with an alcohol content in low single digits.... not what it was. It is even weaker than the beer supermarkets sell. If you read Discworld books the name is amended to Scumble with the same effect. s 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/311250-ti-basicti-extended-basic-games-that-are-worth-to-be-compiled/page/15/#findComment-4817357 Share on other sites

From Collins dictionary: scrump - in British English - verb( dialect ) to steal (apples) from an orchard or garden ti99iuc- are you able to amend? Thanks for the heads-up Stephen. The original code I found was a bad translation in Italian of the game but because I hadn't any other information on this game just used the name I found in the code. as wrote in the previous message probably the person that translated the game in Italian was also not an English expert, and me too. ? BTW, I updated the description and the original code for SCRUMPER on the TI99iuc dedicated page. I have a question about it, have you ever seen e real physical copy of this game on cassette tape or it was just published on this newsletter? I asking this because I always seen only commercial titles from Lantern Software and I didn't know they had published stuff for free too. I also been able to link it to the TI USER Newsletter page now. In addition, I remembered that I have the Issue 4 - May '84 that is incomplete with missing pages, have you another copy to scan maybe, please? So I will be able to update the present scan. one more question, I have some of the original cassette tapes by Andromeda Software and I am trying to dump. I have problems with two of them: - Pirate Island - (Ti Basic Game) - It won't load - Bad Tape. - Grand Pree - (XB game) - game good but the Instruction side is damaged. Have you a copy of them maybe? blackbox
Hello there.. in answer to various queries... strumper is somewhat archaic but was fairly offensive - linked to strumpet. scruff is short for scruffian - someone generally untidy (casual clothing can be referred to as scruffy) in the case of the time and source the reference would be affectionate rather than offensive. Very well dressed men might use the term offensively about poorer people. TI-User 4- yes I have a perfect copy and that will be in my next post on this thread together with issue 3. What I do not have are perfect copies of 5 and 6 (Oct and Nov 84) - not good enough to scan at all, very faded copies with not enough ink to bring out. A number of games in TI-User originated with LANTERN SOFTWARE- one reason I think Simon edited the magazine. Scrumper is not known to have had a commercial release. ANDROMEDA SOFTWARE is fairly rare and I have never seen any in the flesh. s 3 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/311250-ti-basicti-extended-basic-games-that-are-worth-to-be-compiled/page/15/#findComment-4817689 Share on other sites

+Ksarul
Of course, in my experience, the verb "to scrump" has a somewhat different meaning (as it involves stealing the affection of another person for a quick roll in the hay). 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/311250-ti-basicti-extended-basic-games-that-are-worth-to-be-compiled/page/15/#findComment-4818534 Share on other sites
+mizapf
Interestingly, the noun "scrump" refers to something small in general (cf. German "schrumpfen" = shrink), including a small apple, and hence the verb to scrump means "to steal apples". This is a bit confusing, but everyone has such stories in their language, I guess. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/311250-ti-basicti-extended-basic-games-that-are-worth-to-be-compiled/page/15/#findComment-4818546 Share on other sites
