Very different mix of systems this week!

Arcade:

I got my Astro City Mini V and tried out a few games. Beefy power supply and I didn't notice a huge lag, but I suck anyway.

Same! Same! Same! 1P - 25 minutes

Tatsujin - 15 minutes

Atari 7800:

Asteroids - 35 minutes for HSC

Atari Lynx:

Critter Championship - 20 minutes for HSC

Nintendo Entertaiment System:

Crystal Mines - 15 minutes

Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man - 45 minutes

Such a great game and barely remembered.

Nintendo Game Boy:

The main focus of the week. Almost all homebrew!

Black Castle - 25 minutes

Beat the game, started nightmare mode.

Gunship - 10 minutes

G-Zero - 20 minutes

Nintendo Game Boy Color:

Petris - 15 minutes

To my dismay, I realized this doesn't work on a Nomad. The start button and C button are mapped together and the A button doesn't work. Boo! I played it a lot on my real Genesis, though.

Tiger R-Zone:

Star Wars: Rebel Forces - 15 minutes

It seemed much harder than usual. Weird.

Tiger Sega Pocket Arcade:

Sonic 3D Blast - 10 minutes

Just playing around.

7. Sinclair ZX Spectrum - 97 min.
8. NES/Famicom - 86 min. (#1)
9. PC DOS - 85 min.
10. Commodore 64 - 72 min.

Solar Fox climbs back into first place both on the overall and pre-NES lists, in front of overall #2 Gelantinous: Humanity Lost and #3 Jr. Pac-Man. The later game leads the Arcade into a system win, with Game Boy ahead of the Atari 2600.

Despite nearly 100 games this week (phew!), none of them exceed the 1000, 5000 or 10000 cutoffs. I don't recall last time I checked, but we're up to 10979 entries now, so within a week or two we'll exceed 11000 different games. Of those, 1562 (14.2%) have been played this year.

Same! Same! Same! 1P

This game is really stupid, isn't it? I really love this game, partially because of how stupid it is, but also because of everything else. Everything wants you dead the instant you start the game and it only gets harder. I've only made it to about the halfway point of stage 6 (of 10... this game is like 40 minutes of torture, and that's if you no miss the whole game. Good luck with that...), but I don't remember exactly. I could go check my replay, though.

You've got 30Hz autofire on the Astro City Mini V, so abuse the shit out of that to insta-kill bosses. You don't even have to fight the stage 1 bosses at all because of this.

Anyway, yeah, play the Mega Drive version or the arcade 2P version or arcade Fire Shark if you want a version of this game that's actually playable by normal humans... or I guess play the arcade 1P version if you want to play one of the hardest games ever made.

And I just realized I'm wearing my Same! Same! Same! t-shirt. This guy: https://www.beep-shop.com/ec/products/detail/F-1--500

Here are my times for this past week on classic systems:

Arcade:

Burger Time - 18 min.

Jr. Pac-Man - 13 min.

Pepper II - 61 min.

This time, aside from the usual Jr. Pac-Man (which was only one game though) I tried two other games I didn't play recently, Burger Time and Pepper II. In Burger Time, I reached the 6th pattern, but didn't clear it. In Pepper II, I played a long session of about an hour after which I got the hang of the game at least so I could complete one set of 4 mazes.

I was a bit all over the place this week, and I ended up with more time to focus on classic gaming than expected.  I started off the week planning to finish DOTC on the Atari ST, and I got that done.  Then I got caught up in the Intellivision HSC which is playing 3 games simultaneously.  Pinball is what drew me in because I love that game, and I spent a lot of time on it, but I played a few more Inty games as well.  At some point I was browsing around and discovered a so-called sequel to River Raid for the Amiga called River Raid Reloaded.  It has some distinctly non-RR stuff going on at times, but the core gameplay is there.  It has an ending, so I may play a bit more and try to get to the end.  Over the weekend, I took the time to play an early version of 1942 for the 7800 that was shared with me here on these boards.  It is great and I'm sure 7800 fans will love it.  That also motivated me to try versions of 1942 on a few other platforms, and I got sucked into playing it in MAME.  Also, this weekend I got a surprise invite to go to the Electric Starship Arcade near Ft Worth, so I happily went and played a handful of arcade games there.  I got the bug to play Return of the Jedi while I was there, so I came home and played in MAME and on some computers too.

And finally, retro-gaming pseudo celebrity "The 8-Bit Guy" released his latest game not too long ago (at least I think it is his latest).  I stumbled across this arcade version at the Electric Starship Arcade.  I have not played any of the home versions, but it made me want to.  I downloaded a "shareware" version that I found he posted somewhere with 2 levels.  Perhaps I will try that next week.  As for the arcade game.  I couldn't make sense of it - lots of buttons, and I'm not sure it was working 100%.

It's a pretty decent game. It has an Ed Averett-ish Odyssey2 look and feel to it. This Inufuto guy has a few games, http://inufuto.web.fc2.com/8bit/ , that he ports to a boatload of different systems. And it looks like lift was ported to the ZX81 just a few hours ago. :) If ya search for Inufuto on here, you'll find a number of threads.

Here's the summary for Week 33, running from August 15 - 21. We logged 3579 minutes of eligible play, playing 82 games on a total of 25 systems.

Top 10:

1. Pinball (Intellivision) - 380 min.
2. Defender of the Crown (Atari ST) - 234 min. (#5)
3. Vanguard (Atari 2600) - 211 min.
4. NFL 2K1 (Dreamcast) - 180 min.
4. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 180 min. (#1)
6. BurgerTime (Intellivision) - 120 min.
7. 1942  (Arcade) - 107 min.
7. Snafu (Intellivision) - 107 min.
9. Tatsujin Ou (Arcade) - 95 min.
10. River Raid Reloaded (Amiga) - 82 min.

Pre-NES top 10:

1. Pinball (Intellivision) - 380 min.
2. Vanguard (Atari 2600) - 211 min.
3. Solar Fox (Atari 2600) - 180 min. (PN#1)
4. BurgerTime (Intellivision) - 120 min.
5. 1942  (Arcade) - 107 min.
5. Snafu (Intellivision) - 107 min.
7. 1942 (WIP) (Atari 7800) - 75 min.
8. Return of the Jedi (Arcade) - 68 min.
9. Kaboom! (Atari 2600) - 66 min. (PN#6)
10. Pepper II (Arcade) - 61 min.

Top 10 systems:

1. Intellivision - 657 min.
2. Atari 2600 - 607 min. (#3)
3. Arcade - 576 min. (#1)
4. Atari ST - 263 min. (#5)
5. Atari 8-bit - 194 min. (#4)
6. Dreamcast - 180 min.
7. Genesis - 156 min. (#6)
8. Amiga - 102 min.
9. Handheld/Tabletop - 100 min.
10. Atari 7800 - 90 min.

For a change, the Intellivision makes a major impact on the list with Pinball both overall and pre-NES #1. On the overall list, it is followed by Defender of the Crown for the Atari ST, also a less commonly seen system over here (or at least it used to be). Solar Fox is #4 and #3, seeing the HSC game Vanguard sneak past.

Vanguard (Atari 2600) also becomes member #497 in the 1000 Minute Club with a total of 1160 minutes. Additionally, the tracker is now up to 11003 different entries so +24 this week if my numbers and math are correct.
