+CyranoJ
Yeah you basically never see new neogeo, megadrive, dreamcast games called homebrew.

Especially Xeno Crisis, Tanglewood are not refered as homebrew. To be a bit more specific: homebrew also often refers to hacks of a existing software/games, isn't it? Oh OK. But these games were a lot more mentioned by general gaming websites, so I don't think it's specific to Genesis. Since "new games on old systems" represent about a third of the games I tackle at my website, I need a word to differentiate them more easily. I also use the word 'demake' which is also very specific to retrogaming for instance. Big VG websites don't necessarily need that.

On my website you do, because I don't see why these systems should be treated differently than the NES, the C64 or the Jaguar.
+jgkspsx
I dunno… https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast_homebrew https://segaretro.org/List_of_Sega_Mega_Drive_homebrew_games#2020_-_2021 https://www.reddit.com/r/neogeo/comments/2g3683/homebrew_neo_geo_shooter_razion_released_on_aes/ If Razion, Xenocider, Xenocrisis, Tänzer, and Tanglewood are homebrew, there can be no negative connotation to it in those people’s minds. EDIT: although that page on Sega-16 seems to have been abandoned in favor of an “aftermarket games” tag that is not super helpful as it includes all of the reissues of games that were commercially released in the system’s lifetime… https://segaretro.org/Category:Mega_Drive_aftermarket_games So maybe this is an evolving terminology shift. In any case, whatever you call them, they are what I am most excited about in video gaming right now for most systems.
agradeneu
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indie_game Indie games evolved from homebrew or "amateur games", so to speak. They are usually focusing on polished artwork and gameplay mechanics. Some try to be entertainment art, akin to independent film of new ways of expression and narration. Last but not least they are not free, but commercial releases. Edited January 16, 2022 by agradeneu

But Sturmwind by Duranik, Gunlord or Last Hope by NG Dev are not listed as DC homebrew. Hm....
JagChris
Agradeneu seemed to imply homebrew was synonymous with amateur. By that metric it definitely doesn't apply to Duranik.

+Sauron
It's a matter of terminology. Call them "indie" or "homebrew", doesn't really matter to me. 4

+Biff Burgertime
I think it's every game developer's right to say "my product is no amateur hack job, it deserves to be prominently displayed alongside Checkered Flag and Supercross 3D.""

Editorb
It could be noted (and thus, I shall) that all homebrew games are independent; perhaps not all independent games are homebrew.
