HSC20 Round 11: "NEW TO THE HSC" REPTON, METEOR STORM & MORE...

Recommended Posts

REPTON

METEOR STORM, ROCKBALL, ELIMINATOR & SKY BLAZER

NEW to the HSC, well here goes, I think I had my eye on Repton for a while but only picked Meteor Storm based on the screenshot so fingers crossed! We can extend the round time and add in a third "not played" similar looking/style game if we see one perhaps? [several games added to the round, some may end up as bonus games, scoring to be made up as usual]

Game Settings

All on default apart from Rockball - play 1st life only with a bonus for the high score if anyone wants to stick with it.

Repton

Hold fire in to move

[Space] is Nuke

[Select] keyboard/Joystick control

[Esc]/[Option] Pause, fire to resume

Manual:  https://archive.org/details/repton-iron-on-sirius/Repton_Sirius/ seems to have no page 3 so not much info at all!

Repton: 4760

Anyone having issues getting the game to run, or wanting to read the instructions, should grab the .ATX from Atarimania. Controls definitely take some getting used to.

I've added the links to the first post - fandals versions are usually good, if not let me know folks and I will let him know ;)

Another reason for playing Meteor Storm is it's by John Atack who gave us the superb Quasimodo

Meteor Storm - 5900 pts

Repton - 4670 pts

I agree that the controls in Repton takes a bit to get used to, the fact that you need to shoot to move anywhere. It also opens up for multiple strategies: stay where you are and wait for enemies to approach, or hunt them in traditional Defender style. At first I thought the game appears simplistic but after a few rounds I noticed it has its challenges.

Meteor Storm is more of a bonus game to me. Release your vessel from the mother ship, navigate through the meteor storm and land on the yellow bars of the city. Pick up a citizen, move back through the meteors to the mother ship. Sometimes you lose 1000 pts for something hitting the city. Cute, but to me clearly Repton is the main game out of these two.

I've added in Rockball which looks like an Asteroids clone, might be too easy to start with at least from my quick play. Music will drive you nuts so hope there is a key to mute it!

On Rockball you seem to get an extra life every 5k. It's not a bad game just a bit boring

Meteor Storm: 7450

Rockball: 73300

Eliminator: 1505

Sky Blazer: 1640

Rockball is a poor man's Asteroids clone, not too bad aside from trying to aim for the tiny asteroids. Eliminator is a unique game I enjoyed. Best as I gather you blow up the buildings on the bottom to reset the growing static pattern that is slowly limiting your movement. Sky Blazer is quite a challenge. Couldn't get past the second mission. Don't know how you're supposed to bomb the tank when it moves ahead faster than you can catch up.

I think you mean Rockball regarding 1 life score? I spent some time yesterday trying to identify where the life counter is, in order to stop increasing it but I failed to find it yet.

Another way to fix it would be to make that fuel meter drain much much faster.   That would make it challenging.   If that is an easier find could try that.

Ha! I gave it one more try, realizing that while on your last life, zero more ships are displayed meaning that you don't start with 5 but with 6 lives. The "offending" memory position holding number of lives is $A4 (player 1) and $A5 (player 2). There is even code included that compares those values to #$FF in order for not the lives counter to overflow to 0.

In this patch, the sound effect for an extra life still is played but the number of lives never increases. It was tested very briefly in Altirra, let me know if it works properly.

Tagging @therealbountybob as well.

Eliminator - 1508 pts

Rockball (no extra lives) - 32750 pts, rack 6

Sky Blazer - Mission 2

It seems my patch above for Rockball works well. Regarding Eliminator, I'm not sure exactly what to shoot and not to shoot. The blue pattern grows shorter and shorter and at the end, the static is removed and starts over as it is a new level. Sky Blazer seems to reset your score when you lose a life, so probably playing more for level reached than highest score on that one, though I agree that the tank on the second mission seems very hard to reach unless you can raise in altitude, cheat the tank and move ahead and then drop ahead of it.
