My friend sent me her husbands 7800 and their collective collection of 7800/5200/2600 games, including a really nice condition copy of Commando Raid, a copy of Winter Games for 2600, Mario Bros and Pole Position for 7800, Vanguard for 2600, and 1 5200 game in the form of Keystone Kapers, my 7800 does not have hookups or anything sadly but it looks fairly decent, lacks the expansion port sadly but i can't wait to expand more into the 7800 world thanks to Atari's 2600+ and their continued support of legacy hardware and now i have my own 7800 to explore even more of that console's library!

I want to shout out my friends son, he could've kept the 7800 but he wanted me to have it so bless him. Also he's looking for a CRT TV iirc. NGL i gotta hang out with him, seems like a cool dude.

i could send pictures later but i'm trying to clear some room for everything, i'm trying to offload my lesser used games to get more 7800 stuff.

busy busy busy.

Two new games in my collection: Scramble and Lady Bug Arcade from Champ Games.

At the moment only Scramble works on 2600+, but I keep my fingers crossed for @Ben from Plaion and his team, that also Lady Bug Arcade will work. At the moment I play it with Stella on my Mac.
Both are great ports for 2600. Lady Bug is really addictive game!

If you want to offload the 5200 Keystone Kapers, I'll gladly trade you for 7800 carts.

You made out real good! HERO alone is worth that, not to mention all the other ones you picked up with it! Very Nice!

Was really happy with the haul, even in a bit of a messy state! Only previously had a handful of carts from way back in the 80s so job lots are always a good springboard. Of course there was a duplicate in Centipede, but what job lot doesn't have a Centipede lol

Only just got back into the scene and never knew those even existed. Awesome titles, some other good ones on the site to so thanks for sharing.

I did see it was not officially compatible with 2600+, but does the unofficial Fw fix this then? Still on 1.0 for the moment!

I am still devastated by my lack of Ikari Warriors 7800, i am even contemplating selling the car for it... just so i can go be like a 12 year old again and go "yo i got a new game, caprisuns and fruit gushers, can craig hang out?"

I beg that some mystical unearthed copy from a warehouse in south america or in the hands of a 90's video store employee floats my way for a still absurdly high price...

Now Empire Strikes Back NTSC joins my collection (on the right).

Why NTSC?

Faster and Star Wars music once the game loaded🤗

You can’t keep buying all the NTSC carts! There won’t be any left for us! 🤣

This one I got with an NTSC warning from Germany 🤗

They still have sometimes lower prices as on PAL OG they give wrong colors... once the seller learns about the 2600+, prices will double🤫

I have now completed the Konami published Atari 2600 trilogy* with my latest purchase, Pooyan! The trilogy being Pooyan, Strategy X and Marine Wars.

It’s in lovely condition too, and I like the unusual shape of these carts.

This is the PAL version, and it’s an interesting one. Yes, it has a squashed screen, but they have disguised it well, as instead of just having black bars at the top and bottom they extended the colours instead. I would obviously rather have full size graphics but this technique feels less jarring and is not as noticeable outside of side by side comparisons with the NTSC version. I have also seen Activision employ this method with Frostbite and Private Eye, Acti also moved some of the HUD upwards a little too to make it less obvious.

Palettes as per the current 2600 Plus config.

Here’s the PAL version in Stella (Z26 Palette):

PooyanPALZ26.thumb.png.5e85abfe8710572f0593fbe4bca1c6b2.png

And here’s the NTSC version in Stella (Standard Palette):

Clearly superior on the NTSC cart, but some good trickery going on there.

I find these differences interesting, but I am clearly a nerd! 💁🏻🤓

EDIT: Strategy X and Marine Wars are also quite interesting when you compare the PAL and NTSC versions, well, I think so. I can share, if anyone else is interested?

I find it interesting myself. I would like to see the difference.

Here is Strategy X. Konami have employed the 'fill the screen with colour technique' again.

Palettes as per the current 2600 Plus config.

Here’s the PAL version in Stella (Z26 Palette):

Yes, a squished PAL version, but again they made an effort to make it less obvious. Which colours do you like best? I think Pooyan was a PAL colour win, here I’d say that I prefer the NTSC version.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Take a look at Marine Wars. This is the most interesting of the three games, well, with regards to the choices with the graphics.

Here’s the PAL version in Stella (Z26 Palette):

Side by side again.

They didn’t employ the 'fill the screen with colour technique' here, in either version, both versions have ugly black borders. The PAL one has an odd shifted upwards position, but strangely fills more of the screen than the NTSC cart. When you look at the actual play area the NTSC version is larger though, so more trickery here, well done to Konami, with all three games actually.

With regards to the colours I prefer the PAL one for everything other than the violet sea, I am not sure why they didn’t use a more suitable shade of blue, the NTSC sea could have been better too. Perhaps this is an emulation thing and neither are the true colours? Who knows?! Another odd choice at he top of the screen too, perhaps the dev was high. Other than the sea I find the PAL version slightly less garish overall. Both could be better.

Note that I haven’t touched on game speed differences here, just the colours and the screen size.

That's enough nerdiness for today, I hope you enjoyed the show. 🤓😁😋
