I’ve not heard of Laser Attack. Do you mean Laser Blast?  It’s hard to imagine how that could be someone’s favourite though.

My latest list-but is a top-19, and in no order:

• Yar's Revenge - so simple in gameplay yet so addicting. 
• Carnival - while not quite the arcade, it does the job,
• Towering Inferno - A breath of fresh air as it's not a conventional shooter
• Fast Food - it turns "Kaboom!" on its side, and has that warped sense of humor that you might find in The Simpsons
• Defender - blocky or not, this looks better than the arcade as it's an actual city and with people almost to scale, instead of across a wireframe mountainscape. Perfect sound effects too.
• HERO - all-time classic, even if I play it more on the 5200
• Space Invaders - I prefer the 5200's version but have played it often on the 2600
• Adventure - timeless classic, where the gameplay makes the square, --> arrow, and cute ducks immaterial no matter what they looked like.
• Jr Pac-Man - nice innovation to do vertical scrolling. Monsters are brutal-difficult, though!
• Frostbite - build your igloo before the temperature drops too far, or before Fuzzy Bear eats you.  Perfect risk/reward arcade strategy
• Oink - repetitive, but a nice take on The Three Little Pigs
• Ghost Manor - too quick, but has a decent plot and is one of the few Xonox games that's as playable as it is enjoyable 
• Spike's Peak - too difficult, but keep returning to it anyway
• BASIC Programming, just so I can gawk at the wonderful cover art. Atari really defined cover art back then. I otherwise stick to the 800XL for BASIC, however...
• Solaris - Star Raiders on Steroids.
• Turmoil - rabid but fun
• Revenge of the Beefsteak Tomatoes - games with unique ideas I tend to gravitate toward
• MASH - 20th Century Fox is a bit unsung when it comes to decent 2600 titles...
• Porky's - ditto, oddly...

I've started working on updating the Homebrew and Starpath lists. While I'm at it I will update the main list and I'll also add in some extra data analysis for fun!

 

Status Updates:

Top 100: I added in all the new votes, but I noticed a few discrepancies between 2016 and 2020 so I want to reconcile those before posting the list.

Homebrews: I know that this was dropped and I understand the reasons. I am always in favor of promoting the hard work people do on the homebrew scene so while it might not be an accurate "top 10" list, if it encourages someone to check out a game they may have overlooked then that's a good thing!

Starpath: I see no reason not to keep this going! Unfortunately, as with the homebrews, it was limited to a top 10 list and anything below that was deleted so I need to go through all 34 pages to finish the list.

Other: If there are any specific results people want to see (e.g. top 10 Activision games) let me know!

This list has not been updated since 12/2/08 (see page 13) so there have been some changes, but surprisingly few for a 14 year span.

 - Dragonstomper maintains its first place standing.

 - Frogger, which has repeatedly swapped places with Commie Mutants, now has a huge lead over it and is creeping up on Dragonstomper!

 - Fireball maintains its position but if anyone is wondering why it actually has less points now, I looked through the entire thread and I believe the only explanation is that jboypacman's vote had accidentally been counted twice.

 - Survival Island surprisingly jumps ahead of Rabbit Transit, though with so few votes in the bottom half of the list this isn't that significant.

 - As I'm now including all games rather than just a top 10 or top 5, Sword of Saros appears in 11th place with it's one vote.

Going through the homebrews I noticed that some totals weren't matching up. Then I realized it was due to inconsistencies in whether or not hacks were counted as homebrews (versus not counted at all). I decided to remove hacks from the homebrew category, and rather than throw that data away I compiled it in a separate list. The data is a bit meaningless given that only 12 people voted for hacks, and only 3 people voted for more than one but here it is.

Rather than list my favorites, I am going to try to rank my top 10 Atari 2600 games based on hours played. 

I loved a lot of the arcade type games, but I did not play them for hours on end.

4  - E.T. (not even close to the worst video game ever!!!)
5  - Activision Decathlon (destroyed many joysticks playing this game)
6  - Pitfall
7  - Video Chess (this game taught me how to play chess)
8  - Superman
9  - Maze Craze (awesome multi-player game)
10 - Human Cannonball (I loved guessing the physics/gravity results)

 

As for the "arcade" style games, Yars Revenge is my absolute favorite.

Ha ha!!  As a small kid, it took me a long time to finally beat the computer at level 1.  I never made it to level 6 or 7.

It is actually the game I spent the most time playing.... but including my idle time looking at the screen and figuring out my next move didn't seem fair to the games above it on the list.

 

It is really amazing that they were able to cram a decent chess engine into 4K!!!!

Okay, at long last here is the updated "Top 100" list. As I mentioned above, games will be ranked by total points. In a tie, the game with the most votes gets priority; in the case of a second tie, the one with the most 1st place votes gets priority (after that it's alphabetical). This eliminates many of the ties that were in the list previously. Also, keeping with the tradition that @Miss 2600 started 11 years ago, this is no longer a true top 100 list but a ranked list of every Atari 2600 which has received a vote (homebrews, hacks, and Starpath games excluded). I have not finished going through all 34 pages of this thread so it is not 100% accurate (there are some discrepancies in the lists from when the person maintaining it switched, including some low ranked games which dropped off the list entirely.)

In the top 10 games, Pitfall! maintains its first place position well ahead of everything else. River Raid slides down 2 places in a very close race for the 2nd and 3rd positions. H.E.R.O. gets the biggest increase in points (29) pulling ahead of Yar's Revenge. Missile Command currently holds its position in 5th place, but for how long?

 

Defender 2 is now combined with Stargate, helping slide it up 4 places from #40 to #36. However, the biggest jump in the top 100 was Fast Food which leapt 8 places from #83 to #75.

 

Beyond the top 100 there was a lot of shuffling around, in part due to my new ranking system but also because most of the games after about #180 only have 1 or 2 votes. Thunderground went from last place all the way up to #221 with a single vote. However, the biggest jump overall was Boing! which went up 88 places from #268 to #180. No new games have entered the list.

Oh, the memories looking thru those 283 games.  😀  Thanks for your time and effort keeping the list updated!! 

 

Seeing the entire list and knowing where the games rank is wonderful for a "numbers nerd" like me.  From memory, Sneak n' Peek and Golf were the only games that I owned in the 80's that didn't make the list... and I can understand why. 🤣  Well, I guess I did purchase Basic Programming from a clearance bin, but it is not a game and the programming was VERY limited.

 

I am surprised that Grand Prix is so far down the list.  I remember working out a pattern that allowed me to get thru one of the races without ever hitting the brakes.  I did have to let up on the gas in a few spots though.  The sound and experience of zooming past the other cars was great!!  All of my Activision games were really fun to play.

 

Pitfall was absolutely groundbreaking and deserves the top spot... fun and very challenging (I never did get all 32 treasures).  Pitfall II was more impressive, but it wasn't quite as challenging. Plus, after I won, I never played it again... kind of like Raiders of the Lost Ark.
