@cvga  Well, I like the two bowling games in different ways.  The original bowling has realistic pin action.  E. A. Smith's homebrew is like a whole let's-go-to-the-bowling-alley experience.  Uh, one fishing game.  Go Fish! is like Shark! Shark! for Intellivision, where you are the fish.  You eat little fish and grow bigger and then you can eat bigger fish.

I was teasing about the fishing but did find it interesting that you put a bowling game on each list :) I need to play more Strike Zone bowling!

My own top 10 :

1) Beamrider

2) Stargate

3) Enduro

4) River raid

5) Frogger

6) Missile command

7) Klax

8)Track and field

9) Jr. Pac Man

10) Millipede

I would agree with @Crazy Climber though, that a lot of games would be overlooked because people just never played them. My own top 10 is made up largely of games that I have only played more recently via emulation. If I had to do a top 10 based purely on games I played "first time around" it would look like this

1) Enduro

2) River Raid

3) Frogger

4) Missile command

5) Star Raiders

6) Bezerk

7) Space Invaders

8) Centipede

9) Stampede

10) Dodge Em

By the time you are at the bottom of that list, you are looking at relatively forgettable titles. Not bad games for the time by any means, but neither Stampede nor Dodgem would get anywhere near most collectors top 10. But they'd have been my top 10 back then, simply because they were the games I actually knew

As an aside ,if you'd asked me what my favourite Atari game was at the time I was playing it regularly as a kid, I'd definitely have said Frogger. Which I guess shows how tastes change as you grow up

Forgettable? Dodge'em? really?

Rather than list my favorites, I am going to try to rank my top 10 Atari 2600 games based on hours played.

I loved a lot of the arcade type games, but I did not play them for hours on end.

1  - Adventure
2  - Haunted House
3  - Pitfall II
4  - E.T. (not even close to the worst video game ever!!!)
5  - Activision Decathlon (destroyed many joysticks playing this game)
6  - Pitfall
7  - Video Chess (this game taught me how to play chess)
8  - Superman
9  - Maze Craze (awesome multi-player game)
10 - Human Cannonball (I loved guessing the physics/gravity results)

As for the "arcade" style games, Yars Revenge is my absolute favorite.

Good point based on hours...

Mine would probably be, not in any particular order, and, "back in the day":

1. Air Sea Battle

2. Combat

3. Superman

4. Starship

5. Demon Attack

6. Missile Command

7. Asteroids

8. Dodge 'em

9. Raiders

10. Defender (Original release)

11. Space Invaders

(OK, that's eleven).

Do you have a spreadsheet with all the votes? I wonder if there would be significant changes if you scored the games according to ESC rules with 12 points for first place, 10 for second, and the rest as now.

Unfortunately, no. I have the totals from the last person who tallied them and the votes since then. It would take a long time to go through the first 30 pages and add them all up again.

We should start a new poll. See how opinions have changed in the past couple of decades.

Or people could keep voting in this one and we could see that too!

Here's a comparison of voting results from the past 4 years ("overall ranking" means including all votes from the past 19 years). It is quite different but unfortunately the sample size is very small (25 people) so I don't think it's very meaningful.

1. YARS' REVENGE (overall ranking = 6, 61 points, 9 votes, 1 first place vote)

2. ADVENTURE (overall ranking = 2, 60 points, 8 votes, 4 first place votes)

Thinking about this - a new thread specifically to encourage people to vote again could be interesting.  Probably don't get many new votes here because people have already commented in the thread.  Votes MIGHT be different if solicited again.  Although, I would personally just reference my old vote and perhaps switch a few around.

Here's an idea, and maybe it has already been done -- sorry if it has, and sorry either way if this idea sucks.  But I keep thinking about different and maybe more valid ways to compile a ranking of the best games of all time.  A few of the problems, as I see it, with open vote lists include:

1.  Most people voting have played only a fraction of the viable candidates, resulting in a major bias in favor of games that have been played by a larger percentage of the voters.

2.  Based on the comments supplied with the votes, quite a few people (and probably many more who do not happen to mention it) are relying on old, fuzzy memories colored by nostalgia, rather than a recent or thorough evaluation.

3.  Voters can be expected to peruse the ongoing rankings before casting their own votes, which naturally influences the new votes - whether consciously or not.

So I would like to see an alternate system tried at least as a supplement to this list.  What kind of system?  I am thinking probably a round robin tournament style format to ensure thorough comparisons.  That way the above concerns are addressed as follows:

1.  Everyone voting will have played all of the games they are voting on.

2.  The games will have been played recently and with a mindset geared toward making a thorough assessment.  The games cannot rest on reputation or faulty memories but must prove their worth anew in each head to head matchup.

3.  The ranking list need not be compiled and released until the evaluation period ends.

Of course there are weaknesses with using the round robin approach to determine a ranking.  It is demanding on the testers/voters, so attrition will surely be an issue. The current best of listing already suffers from having too small a number of contributors.  But hey, we just need enough people to step up and make the commitment!

To ensure the number of comparisons is manageable and also the most meaningful, maybe a series of tournaments should be devised, each featuring a different game genre (e.g. shooters, mazers, etc.) to make things a little more apples to apples.  Each tournament could include around 12 nominees, which would appear to mean each tester goes through 66 (?) game comparisons.  A difficulty here is how to select the nominees, and to some extent we would probably need to draw on the existing best of listings.  Still, narrowing the scope by specifying genre should result in a decent chance that lesser known hidden gems get included.  The top finishers from the genre-specific tournaments could then go head to head in a round robin finale in an attempt to generate a somewhat more informed best of the best list.

Would enough people be interested?  Does this warrant a separate thread?

Ideally Al could add a "top 10 games" table to the database. Users could change their top 10 at any time in their control panel. A simple database query would show the current top ten.

Even better would be if the control panel were set up to track a top 10 list for each of the systems that AtariAge documents. Based on the Title Search, lower-left of main page, those would be: 2600, 5200, 7800, Lynx. and Jaguar.

Bump.  On Aprll 30, 2015, @SpiceWare Mr. Spice suggested a database with table.  Users could change their votes (as their tastes would change and they would discover new games that they like) and users could query the table and it would always show the current top ten.

Probably not. While you raise some good points, the real problem with this thread is that over the course of 20 years only 400 people have voted so the sample size is too small to be meaningful anyway.

I agree that the participation level in this thread is disappointing.  And probably so would be the size of the group willing to do a round robin evaluation -- then again, maybe there are a significant number of us who have not contributed to this top 100 (myself included) because we don't feel qualified due to a lack of comprehensive familiarity/experience, but would happily embrace the challenge of comparing and ranking games in a serial manner?

Guess if no one happens to take up the mantle and I find enough time at some point to consider spearheading an effort, I could start with a poll to gauge interest.  Would also like to hear more about any progress with the adaptive top 10 database idea.
