Actually, a lot of that has already been done. All that would really be needed is source code or reverse engineering so we could figure out the data formats. Something on my bucket list which now that I'm back in school and not working, might be doable.

Still have to work on getting Darkforce on Fido. ;)

Though to be honest, the question really is whether it is worth the trouble. Are there enough players for the games to make it even worth the time. The Atari BBS community just doesn't seem to be that big and it seems to be mostly the same people calling the same BBS's, and if you network them, it almost defeats the purpose of calling more than one I'd think.

Tillek, I agree with you whole-heartedly. In fact, I don't even think the question would be posed if there were enough momentum. It's purely a nostalgia thing. It has no real practical value. And the scary thing is this... We are diminishing in numbers... Or is that scary? I dunno.

But still, wouldn't it be cool?!

Regardless of practicality, I think reverse engineering this would be fun.

DO IT!! We need more retro BBS'es!

Wow.. Looks like I had to put the project on hold for a bit. Fortunately, I have a stack (~10) of USRobotics Courier 33.6k modems sitting here. Just need a multi-port serial card.

I also have ~1.5TB (4x500GB R5) of disk space in an old DL100 someone was going to throw out. I'm giving up on utilizing VoIP due to major instability with analog modems. Looks like I will have to give CenturyLink a call and see what my options are.

As for the BBS, I'm aiming towards Synchronet on Linux (or FreeBSD).

Wow, we had a good month at DarkForce. :)

Thanks to everyone who called!

That's great DarkLord! I'm proud to say some of those calls are from me each week ;)

YYZ BBS has been getting 80 - 100 calls a month this year. Thanks everybody for keeping our Atari BBS'es alive and well!

The picutre I posted above was my halloween picture from this year.

So anyone have the currently telnet address "Inside the Atari 8-Bit"?

Inside the 8-Bit, Steve Carden's BBS, has been offline due to equipment modifications under developement. Steve will bring it back online soon.

(We all miss calling your board, Steve!)

Nice compilation of active BBS'es Doc Clu! Appreciate the advertisement on my two boards:

- YYZ BBS

- 8-Bit Guild BBS

My two boards are still running on original genuine Atari equipment. I work at it to keep these boards alive and maintained for all to enjoy.

Happy retro computing in a modern world!

My pleasure. Thanks for running these two BBS's.

Dr. Clu,

In your list, what does Archive: Yes Kinda mean?

Means I was not all that pleased with what the Internet Archive had on record (from 2008) but they CLAIM they will check in every so often. Not sure how to update an internet archive once it has been archived. (talking about the Internet way back machine)

Just for the record... SFHQ hasn't been down all that time. David B can tell you. ;)

Oh really? Ok. It has not been down AS long then. :D
