Some PSP gaming for me this week...

PSP

Castlvania Dracula X Chronicles - 60 min (A bit of a cheat as this is really pretty much just the TurboGrafx-CD Castlevania game with a graphical makeover, I believe. It is hard, I know that. I played for a bit with the default character, Richter Belmont, until I unlocked Maria. Then I played as Maria for a while. I had never played as her before, so it was quite a change for me. While I think her default attack is stronger, I feel like she doesn't take hits as well as Richter, so it was still tough going. I got to the minotaur boss who swings an axe, throws bricks at you, and charges at you... I couldn't get past him, so I just quit before I got too annoyed. lol... the game looks and plays well. Richter's walking animation seems a bit odd to me, but other than that, solid gameplay like the TG original.)

Hot Shots Golf Open Tee - 90 min (Played a few rounds of golf on the second course. The first course is pretty easy. The second course, Autumn Pagoda, definitely ups the difficulty. I snuck the psp in my bag on a Father/Daughter Girl Scout camping trip and was playing in the tent after lights out. I was having my best round on Autumn Pagoda and on the last hole when the battery ran out on me. That has really been my only complaint with the PSP is that I wish the battery lasted longer. I have the 1001 model and I've heard it was improved on subsequent models. Maybe I'll get one of those at some point. Anyway, the good thing about the PSP is that if your battery does run out, it doesn't lose where you are in the game. So when I got back home and got settled and got my charger plugged back up, I resumed that game on the last hole and got it in at par. I mean, I was four over for the round, but still, that's my best round on that course. lol)

My problem is I can only concentrate on a handful of games, I usually forget what the heck I'm doing in some games if I don't go back to them soon enough.

Nice thing with DQ 11, when you load your game it gives you a quick rundown of what’s going on so you are refreshed on what you were doing when you left. Nice.

Borderlands 2 960

Dragon Quest 11 80

Here are my times for this past week (September 17th through 23rd)...

sorry, I haven't actually been playing anything. I was busy taking part in programming an Atari 7800 version of Baby Pac Man, and while I've been testing it as well, you can't really call this "playing" because the part I tested (the pinball part) isn't playable yet. As of now, you can only launch the ball and watch it going through a curve and disappear.

Therefore, no times for me this week... the Atari 7800 wouldn't be eligible here anyway.

This is going to be one of those two week wrap-up posts, since I was too busy to do a proper one last week. I'll do my best to keep it short though! :)

In terms of overall play time, last week was almost entirely classic pre-2000's games and this week was fairly evenly split between modern and classic games. Both weeks were quite a bit smaller than usual for the spousal unit and I, with roughly half of our usual gaming time logged each week since we've been watching a lot of movies lately and going out and doing social activities with friends before the weather gets too cold to want to go out much. Last week was predominantly focused on Sega games since I picked up a copy of Genesis 6-Pak on eBay, and while waiting for it to arrive in the mail we played through Sonic 3 & Knuckles together via emulation on the Wii; trading off the controller between zones.

Once 6-Pak arrived in the mail I set about playing Streets of Rage, since I had never played it before but had heard lots of good things about it, and it ended up being a really enjoyable game even if I was never able to beat it on either of my two attempts. After that the misses played a bit of Golden Axe then I gave Revenge of Shinobi a try. Unfortunately I've never been any good at Revenge of Shinobi and even after 25 years of off and on attempts to get better at it I still can't get past the first part of the second level and always get stuck at the end of the waterfall area, where you have to make a series of precision jumps on tiny and rapidly descending logs to make it to the exit.

That was pretty much it for Sega gaming and the only other game played last week was Alien Trilogy for the PlayStation, which the misses decided to play through again after we watched all 4 of the classic Alien movies on VHS. Alien Trilogy has long been her favorite first-person shooter and she's been having a great time playing it again. In fact, it was the only game she played this week and I'd say she's about 2/3 of the way through it at this point. For my gaming time this week I gave the absurdly difficult Castlevania: Chronicles on the PlayStation a try (I had just cleaned and refurbished my old PS1 controller and needed a game to test it out with) then spent an hour and a half or so trying out No More Heroes on the Wii, since I scored a complete copy of it for $7 at Half Price Books earlier in the week, and while it was really quirky and a lot of fun I quickly got distracted by Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS.

Looking ahead to next week I know the misses is going to be continuing and likely finishing up her play through of Alien Trilogy on the PlayStation, and I've been having a great time with Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon on the 3DS so I'm planning on playing my respective game through to the end as well. Once Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon is done though I do think I'll probably get back to No More Heroes, since I did really enjoy the short time I spent playing it, and I think the carbon based wife-form has a few more PlayStation games in her sights for after she beats Alien Trilogy. So until next time, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours! :)

Got a couple of games to share in the tracker this week...

PS3

Unmechanical Extended - 220 min (An interesting little game. It's a 2-D puzzle type game where all you can do is fly around and pick up things. Bumping into switches and levers makes other things happen and you move through the game. It's pretty short, as this 220 minutes includes a run through of the regular game from start to finish and a run through of the extra level which is the reason for the "Extended" part of the title.)

Wipeout HD - 36 min (Got a couple more medals on some races. Man this game is hard. I mean, I like games that require practice, but at times this just seems impossible. I still enjoy playing it though... great visuals, good music, and all that speed.)

PSP

Hot Shots Golf Open Tee - 30 min (More time with my most played (currently) golf game. Still working on getting better on that second course. Started a round off great the other day with a birdie and a par, but the third hole was a bogey and the rest of the round was more of the same.)

Lunar Silver Star Harmony - 45 min (Got through the rather long beginning, got to where I am controlling the actual game's main character, roamed around town a bit, and then was just about to start my first adventure (I think) and the battery died. No problem, the psp saves my spot when the battery dies. So I plug it back in and go do other things. Later, I go get the PSP and turn it on, it's still on the game. But then I exited the game... and apparently none of what I did was ever saved. So now I have to go through all that stuff again... sigh...)

6. No More Heroes (Wii) - 84 min.

7. Dragon Quest XI (PC) - 80 min.

8. Lunar Silver Star Harmony (PSP) - 45 min.

9. Wipeout HD (PS3) - 36 min.

10. Hot Shots Golf Open Tee (PSP) - 30 min.

Top systems

1. PC - 1190 min.

2. Xbox One - 694 min.

3. 3DS - 279 min.

4. PS3 - 256 min.

5. Wii - 84 min.

6. PSP - 75 min.

Total 2578 minutes and 11 different games on 6 different systems.

Cimerians' late entry from last week which counts this week, combined with a "down" week for PUBG gives us a new top game in form of Borderlands 2. It also helps the PC platform into the top spot.

In meta terms, the tracker total now is only 2534 minutes from 2^17 and PUBG is only 1130 minutes from 2^15.

I played Forza, too... but a different one...

XBox One

Forza Motorsport 6 - 155 min (Played through more of the Porsche expansion. Got a few different progression type achievements. Some of these cars handle like a dream, others really take some finesse to get around corners well. They seem to understeer or push if you have the gas on, but let off a bit and they come around quickly. I've never driven a rear engine car of any kind, but they're supposed to have some odd handling characteristics because of weight distribution. I can say for sure that Forza seems to be simulating those handling quirks.)

Here are my times for the past week (September 24th through 30th) on modern games...

Browser Based:

Coloruid - 2 min.

Tuper Tario Tros - 26 min.

Tuper Tario Tros is a variation on Super Mario Bros. where you have to switch to Tetris in order to build bridges for Mario which are necessary to overcome certain obstacles.

In Coloruidm, you have to re-color patches of different color to their surrounding color so that eventually the whole screen becomes one color. The problem is that you only have limited moves to achieve this.

It was a pretty exciting week for gaming around here this past week, and we're kicking off the month of October with a whole lot of spooky gaming time to contribute to the trackers! :D

Alien Trilogy (PlayStation) - 101 minutes
Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare (PlayStation) - 93 minutes

Centipede (Atari 7800, Emulated on Nintendo Wii) - 145 minutes

Nintendo 3DS

Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon - 586 minutes

Nintendo Wii
Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai - 257 minutes

Total Video Game Play Time This Week
1,182 minutes (19 hours 42 minutes) [843 minutes eligible]

Individual System Play Times This Week
Nintendo 3DS: 586 minutes
Nintendo Wii: 257 minutes
PlayStation: 194 minutes
Atari 7800: 145 minutes

We got a head start on the month of October this past week, with both the misses and I logging a good bit of time in some very seasonally appropriate games. First the misses finished up her game of Alien Trilogy for the PlayStation by beating all 3 episodes, then she started in on Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare; the latter of which neither of us have ever played before. She's only an hour and a half into the game at this point but she's had a lot of fun with it thus far, since it's a pretty obvious copycat of the earlier Resident Evil games and that's long been one of her favorite game series.

For my gaming time this past week I finally beat the wonderful (and rather lengthy) Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon, and oh man was that game a ton of fun. From beginning to end it was just oozing with Nintendo's signature charm infused into a pretty spooky atmosphere. I've never played the original Luigi's Mansion before, but if it's even half as good as Dark Moon was I'm definitely going to have to play it some day. With Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon completed I then started in on a game that I had been curious about for quite some time after the survival horror buff Radical Reggie recommended it, and that game was Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai for the Wii.

I was pretty skeptical that a Cabela's game could actually be good, let alone provide a compelling survival horror experience, but holy hell did this game ever prove me wrong! It was chalked full of hilariously well written dialog, had a pretty creepy story, and really fun gameplay that felt a lot like Uncharted or one of the more recent Tomb Raider games. I ended up having such a great time with Shadows of Katmai that I played it through from beginning to end in a single session. It was a fairly short game at only 4 hours long, but once I started playing I just couldn't put it down; and for the $3 that I paid for it I really can't complain about the game's length. It's nice to play a shorter game now and then, and it does have some bonus on-rails light gun shooter levels to lend the game some extra replay value.

In spite of my initial skepticism, Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai is definitely going to be making my end of the year list of the top 10 favorite games that I played for the first time this year, and I think I'm probably going to play through it again in the not too distant future. It's a survival horror hidden gem for sure! As far as other games that were played around here this past week go, the only other one to speak of was Centipede for the Atari 7800; which I played via emulation on the Wii. It's been a long time since I played Atari 7800 in any form so I decided to pop into the Atari 7800 High Score Club and join in for a bit. Whether or not I'll keep playing after this round is over I'm not sure about, but for now I'm having fun and that's what's important when it comes to playing games. :)

I think that about covers everything for this week! Next week both the misses and I have some more horror games lined up to play, and I think that's a trend that should continue for the whole month of October. So until next week, and as always, best wishes and happy gaming to you and yours!

Skipped last week, back this week:

PC

Borderlands 1 - 540
Borderlands 2 - 180
Dragon Quest 11 - 45
Magic the Gathering Arena beta - 65
Resident Evil remaster - 125
I actually beat Borderlands 2 for the third straight time and this is my second playthrough of Borderlands, the games are somewhat old and can be pretty repetitive and tiresome...but they're still pretty cool.
It's Halloween this month so I figured I'd put a horror game in there.

4. Game Corp DX (PC) - 624 min.
5. Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (3DS) - 586 min.
6. Borderlands 1 (PC) - 540 min.
7. Cabela's Survival: Shadows of Katmai (Wii) - 257 min.
8. Borderlands 2 (PC) - 180 min.
9. Forza Motorsport 6 (Xbox One) - 155 min.
10. Resident Evil HD Remaster (PC) - 125 min.

Top systems
1. PC - 2887 min.
2. Xbox One - 1823 min.
3. 3DS - 586 min.
4. Wii - 257 min.
5. Browser based - 28 min.

Total 5581 minutes and 15 different games on 5 different systems.

A strong week, actually second largest amount of minutes since the start. The PC takes the crown both for top game and top system, and if we assume most PC's run a Microsoft operating system, that would be 84-85% dominance over Nintendo, and zero Sony this week.

It is hard to believe, but Game Dev Tycoon is a game that I have now played for years. It largely got criticized for closely copying a game I have never played called Game Dev Story which was available for iOS. Since I don't own any devices that can play that game, I have never had a chance to play it, but Game Dev Tycoon is definitely enjoyable and pulls you in. The game places you in history circa 1983 (or so) and you are tasked with designing video games in your garage. You have only a few platforms to design for (which parody real historic computers). Pretty soon a parody of the NES is introduced to the market and you go through history trying to develop games that will capture the best market segment and get the highest reviews. I like that you end up getting invested in the development of the individual games. You pick the genre, topic, platform, & target audience and then you decide how much emphasis to place on development areas like Engine, Story, and Graphics. This really makes you want to make that new Sci-Fi RPG to be the best and get the best reviews. I tend to care about developing the individual games even more than I do making money and progressing through the steps of growing my company. Anyway, I would definitely recommend Game Dev Tycoon for any fan of classic and current gaming.

Game Corp DX is in the same family. This game focuses more on managing the actual company. You hire and train employees who have specializations. Using the right coding specialist on a game with a heavy coding need will result in a better game review upon release. This one adds a small "The Sims" component where you arrange your employees around the work area, placing them close to things like water coolers and meeting areas. At only $2.99 on Steam, I don't see how you won't get your $$ worth on this game. The campaign took me about 10 hours, but I probably could have gone faster. After that there are harder difficulties and a challenge mode that I haven't tried.
