Wrathchild
Thanks also to @phaeron for a quick fix to Altirra to import zeropage labels from the CC65 debug output. And to @Heaven/TQA and @popmilo for regularly kicking my butt and encouraging me to work on Elite 26

The Galactic map is fine, i.e. you can move the crosshair and hit D to select the closest planet. What doesn't work is the 'F'ind function, after selecting this you should be able to type a planet name and if you get a match the cursor will home there. But as soon as you type there's a short delay and "Not found" is shown and so I need to debug and fix that part. twh/f2
Wow. A nicely ported & full playable ELITE --- This is a wonderful piece in restoring justice from missing manufacturer/vendor support in the 80s. Take THIS Firebird, Rainbird, Ocean, Microprose and .. !! 1
Beeblebrox
@Wrathchild Great work. Just wondering if the flicker free PAL patch was going to be implemented in the final release as mentioned earlier on in this topic thread? As still in the development / dev testing phase only in my head. Sound an obvious one currently, ECM/Station Proximity bulbs, need to test the missile systems. Then test other gameplay elements work like equipment enhancements, mission triggering etc. C64 Trumbles is C64 sprite specific and so could be dropped/reworked. Some Atari version specific changes might go in too. 3 hours ago, Steril707 said: Otherwise seems ready for a release, doesn't it? One would think so but as the above shows, not yet. Hopefully this year though if I can maintain the momentum. 54 minutes ago, Beeblebrox said: Just wondering if the flicker free PAL patch was going to be implemented in the final release as mentioned earlier on in this topic thread? snicklin
I have never meaningfully played this on other micros. It comes across as a mix of Mercenary, Energy Czar and Star Raiders. I suppose a lot of the work is in getting it to work in a different, lower resolution with the Atari.
Rybags
The resolutions used there look same as C64 - multicolour for guage panel and hires mono for the exterior view. Looks to use missiles to do the outer frame?
Wrathchild
Indeed it is, and yes, missiles for the side bars. Narrow width employed too to assist with calculations as 32 bytes per line rather than 40 helps with it being a power of 2 and also gives 256 pixels wide in high-res. Unlike the BBC and C64 bitmap layout which is char-cell based, i.e. 8 down then move across and back to the top, the A8 is using a linear bitmap.

Yes it is, and very exciting, for later as an off the wall question, if the flicker still switchable (toggleable) in some way maybe it could it be used as a side effect of damage or being hit, adding intensity to the game. Just more crazy thoughts by Doc Brown ! Edited February 10, 2023 by _The Doctor__

slaanesh
I assume having a linear bitmap means a faster drawing algorithm. So combined with the faster MHz CPU should mean a version of Elite that is somewhat faster than the C64
rensoup
I think at this point we start making demands regarding what title pic should be included... I think this one is a perfect fit : https://www.kindpng.com/imgv/iimJRRx_clipart-rat-group-rat-fuel-rats-elite-dangerous/ but more seriously, this one could look good in hires with PMGs https://www.pngegg.com/en/png-yxyvm A few more here: https://www.pngegg.com/en/search?q=elite+Dangerous+Logo 1

snicklin
This is looking very optimised. However you may be able to squeeze out a few more clock cycles by asking ChatGPT if it can optimise sections of code. I wonder how many people here use ChatGPT for this?
