carlsson
Kik-Start, race 4-5-6 -- 128.52 sec Preppie! -- 6540 pts, level 5 Star League Baseball -- lost 1-41 Ironically the only point I scored on baseball was on a home run. Not sure I'll play this again, it was 50 minutes of very little fun. I'd rather spend 65 minutes on a round of M.U.L.E.

+therealbountybob
What's that mimo... ok will read all the posts soon!! Sorry been struggling to get some decent Atari time but today is the day so have made a start on the games: Preppie! 16,860 (6) BMX Sim as Rider1 2,340 and Rider 2 2,180 made it to the 6th race on both. Need stick in 2nd port folks! Topper 34,905 (c11) Star League Baseball lost 2-10 !! 6 of there runs were on the first innings where I was rusty. Had 1 home run (on the first batter) think it took pity on me as was 10-0 down, then had another run from the bases. Not as fun as I thought but maybe change to sluggers or something for anothr go. Kik-Start and the bonus games later on! Will try and get some tables together tomorrow still no screenshots but have a plan for this

Too bad it is relatively random, meaning sometimes you get hopeless tracks and sometimes you get ones that are a walk in the park. For those curious, the level structure is as follows: Level 1: Only small potholes to either rise the skateboard over or jump. I believe a jump takes a bit longer time. Level 2: Potholes, stones and sudden arrows that may appear at any height and while you're in the middle of a jump. This level is the one I tend to lose lives on. Level 3: Potholes, water filled holes, stones and ramps. You can't ride onto a ramp, you must jump over it. However this level has no arrows, so if you concentrate it should be solvable without losing lives. Level 4: Like level 1, but faster speed. Keep rising the skateboard over each pothole for 50 seconds or so and you're home. Level 5: Like level 2+4 combined. The arrows are back, at faster speed. If you have any lives left, this is where you usually lose them. Level 6: No arrows, just the other obstacles. I cleared it on my first attempt. Level 7: More of the same as in level 6. No major challenge. Level 8: Arrows and everything else. This was my bane, and if you reached this far it is likely you're on your last life anyway. Too bad the game doesn't have a pause key so I could grab a screenshot of my score. great info carlsson, I'll try and update the first post with some more info on the games: including press fire just as the race starts on BMX sim for a boost start and use Space to pause it at the end of the race so you can see your times !

Also it would be great to have a version of Kik-Start with default scores of 999:99 so one is guaranteed to get onto the high score table regardless how bad you drive. Edit: Oh well, I posted screenshots of the high score table anyway so it is possible at least for my times to extract those per track. graywest
Skateboard: 1,480 (Level 5) Not bad. It's similar to BC's Quest for Tires. This one plays on real NTSC hardware if you don't mind the background jumping a bit. Skate Crazy: 4000 Decent - it's playable. Fun for a few minutes but not sure I'd give it another go. Fun Preppie challenge - highest score for the first two screens in 1 man. I'll vouvh a modest 1,730 to kick things off! BMX Sim as Rider1 - 3,140 (25:7 34:2 30:2 32:5) and Rider 2 - 2,195 (25:6 44:3 37:8 34:3 19:7) Topper 37,980 (d13) []Skateboard 920 not overly exciting as you can move l/r across most of the screen using the small jump [Up]. Sometimes he moves to the only path to clear the board not moving and waits for the timer to expire. Worse yet he never moves from his initial spot no matter where I move again till the timer runs out. Not always this happens but often! Seems random but I seem to get it more often. Any one seeing these issues? On 7/4/2022 at 11:40 AM, carlsson said: I believe name input on Topper is made with joystick up/down and left/right. carlsson
Kik-Start, tracks 2-6-8: 124.62 sec (51.64, 32.26, 40.72 *) (*) I managed individually to go faster on some tracks, but we're counting times for when you finished a combo. 21 hours ago, therealbountybob said: Skateboard [..] not overly exciting as you can move l/r across most of the screen using the small jump [Up] I found that if you push up and let go, not only can you move left and right, but you can also push up + fire again and initiate a jump while you're hovering with your skateboard! This can be useful e.g. if you're lifting the skateboard over a pothole, and suddenly an arrow arrives before you will be back on the ground again. Simply push up + fire and turn the lift into a jump. Of course you can no longer position yourself while actually jumping. It might also be good to clear a pothole + upcoming stone as you can lift first, move to the right and extend the move with a jump. I did reach level 8 for the third time but no improvement on my score (today 3770 pts, from before best score 4360 pts). The comparison to B.C.'s Quest of Tires is a good one, perhaps even closer than Moon Patrol is. Except that B.C. isn't randomized IIRC.
+therealbountybob
Must admit, after getting past the first 3 levels Skateboard has some playability - reached level 6 or 7 with an improved score of 2,430. Ditto, but in my case the last square on the board disappeared while I was in the middle of a jump, stealing the level clearance from me. The rabbit does seem to move very randomly, sometimes fast across the board and sometimes not at all. It appears it is more likely to move if you stand very close to him, though of course you don't want him to jump onto you. No improvement of my "lucky first time" score though at least I'm getting 30K.

littleman jack
PS-- *My cat is not helping me with any of these games, nor coming anywhere near the Atari 800 for some reason. He seems perfectly content to stay on the bed or in the bathtub. *Stealing bases does seem to be the way to beat the computer in Star League Baseball. It seems to upset the pitcher and definitely gets your runners closer to scoring position. *UK players, has anyone created a Rounders game for the Atari? I seem to remember seeing XBox and PS2 games of Cricket in England and Hurling in Ireland when visiting relatives in the early 2000s, but never any Rounders. Isn't baseball an offshoot of Rounders.
carlsson
Interesting question. I see that there is a whole family of such games (*) of which rounders seems to be the second oldest (after stoolball, dating back to at least 1450) but I didn't read in detail how much of the rounders rules from 1744 still are in effect today. I am mostly familiar with brännboll which is played in schools rather than professionally. Most probably very few of those lesser known variants have ever reached the video game format, due to being more like children's or party games than full-fledged sports. (*) Wikipedia has more than 20 variants in the bat-and-ball genre: Stoolball, Rounders, Baseball, Softball, Corkball, Kickball, Town ball, Stickball, Vitilla (Dominican Republic), Wiffle Ball, Wireball Brännboll (Sweden), Rundbold (Denmark), Longball (Denmark/Norway), Dødball (Norway), Pesäpallo (Finland - played professionally!) Schlagball (Germany), Palant (Poland), Lapta (Russia), Oiná (Romania), Théque (Normandy. France) and so on Regarding cricket, there was one famous game for the Commodore 128, released quite early on so it is one of the ~10 or so exclusive C128 games in the library. A few C64 games have enhanced features if played in C128 mode but in comparison, the Atari 130XE seems to have had far more exclusive titles not running on 64K machines than the C128 ever had.
