I love the inclusion of characters! Do they have stories told between games?

One idea could be to give your character a few "challenges" between games.

Those could be some exercises with a more limited set of pieces in play.

"Can you check mate the opponent in 2 moves?"

"Can you avoid letting your bishop be captured?"

etc

That way it can feel like a puzzle... and people are actually learning chess strategies in disguise 🙂

Yes, that would be cool. It would turn the game into a multi-game of sorts. Neat.

The stories are a good idea. I'll think about it.

The puzzles would require a lot of development.

At this moment I'm trying to make faster the engine.

It looks great so far!

Any chance that you would use extended RAM in order to implement the remaining mechanics (e.g., castling, en passant, etc.)?  I think it's sort of moving away from "atomchess" ...

I cannot believe I've added a tournament mode complete with tiny pictures

Midori can play against Monkey, Sue, and Professor Shifu.

I forgot to say it has castling, en passant, and promotion.

Also it can use the USCF Chess overlays

I think Atomchess doesn't have "catch" for a box. I'll think another name.

"Atomchess" would work very well, if you were in fact trying to point out the smallness of the program as its primary feature (as you have done in the programming competitions), but I think you're way past that now.  I agree that a new name is in order.

How about something chess-related like, "Grandmaster Challenge"?  It also depends on whether you are going to implement the puzzle aspects, which can then be something to refer in the title.

Here's a fun title that just occurred to me:  "p4wned!" (a chess-minded play on the l33t term "p0wned")  😄

Finally, I managed to get a decent playing speed for the chess engine, and also squashed all the bugs.

It was like riding in bicycle, you start to remember things as you go. 😉

I've sent the ROM to my wide testing group, currently composed of one two three person people 🤪

I dont see why you couldnt just call it "Grandmaster Chess" ? That cant be a trademarked or copyrited name.. could it?

If it goes to cart, i want 2..lol.

Kingsoft/Audiogenic made Grandmaster in 1982-86, but there have been other chess programs since.

Nanomaster Chess?

I understand, but i do not think "Grandmaster" is a trademarkable name. That would be like trademarking "Football", "The", or "Super".

You're probably correct, but remember that Football Manager is protected in one way or another.

How about Grand Master Component Chess?

I've some good news: The game has a publisher attached, and he likes "Mr. Chess"

The newest version of the game allows to promote to any valid piece.

Also, the board setup is now done in a separate mode to ease the editing of the chessboard.
