My WINE support is a bit rusty, but when I used it, it depended...  IIRC, at the time it didn't support Windows USB directly.

But if the program was looking for a USB device and Linux supported that device (storage, serial, etc), then possibly.

I've used it for flashing devices in the past, but I believe the flasher program was looking for a serial device.  That device was USB, but the app was technically just looking for serial.  If the app is hitting the USB stack directly, then it was (still?) not going to work...
But my WINE knowledge isn't current, so don't quote me on that...

I'm wondering if the update image would just work with the Rockchip tools that are already available for Linux.

That's a great thought...

There are already a lot of flasher tools for Linux on the embedded side, so if there is an image file to flash just using a existing tool might work, as long as there isn't some security wrapped around it...

Wow🤙

Looking forward to try V1.1 on my own😊

This will be a big step for 7800 homebrew and PAL games🕹

Well, I have Popeye and hope to receive Crystal Quest and Froggie some day so I really hope a V1.2 will come to get them working too.

But the V1.1 will give me access to most of my favorites 7800 games allready🤗

Glad to see this is all moving along nicely!

I’d love to participate in the beta testing, I have 100+ carts, but I’m currently in Buenos Aires for a while, and my 2600+ is at my other home in Boston. by the time I get back a public release will likely be out.

not that it’s really important, but is there any chance that CentipedeTB for the 7800 might eventually work? I realize that’s a long shot, but maybe later after all the basic functionality bugs are worked out?

I would like to participate in the beta test. I am in the UK and have well over 70+ PAL 2600 carts and a dozen 7800 carts Barnyard Blaster, Crossbow, Donkey Kong Junior, Hat Trick, Joust, Karateka, Pole Position II and Xevious. I know the first two are light gun games but I think at least one had controller option. And a few of the others showed black screen and work fine on my original 7800. Thanks!

Hey John, for this one...

...Crazy Brix swaps controls via the difficulty switches. Can you please try again with joystick plugged in, and switching the first-player difficulty switch if it doesn't work?

Bummed that Popeye wasn’t working. It’s pretty amazing, I’m guessing it’s some kind of super wonder chip set that just can’t be emulated?

Nope, there's no unusual tech in Popeye. With some more bug reports for other homebrew carts, we will hopefully see a pattern and narrow it down. There's also the possibility that Popeye might work for someone else, if it's a dirty cart, fitment issue, edge-case timing, etc., so more reports for reported-failed carts is helpful too.

Wine on linux is not the answer.  It rarely is.

Flatpak or shellscript would be ideal.   Google & other houses have been having firmware updates via web-browser; if you want to get fancy & 100% os agnostic.

At a minimum, I'd think we should have an option for updating the 2600+ thru the VCS.

For firmware flashers... yeah anything that can potentially brick a system, I tend to avoid with Wine.  It's not to say that it doesn't work or can't work... just I remember when Wine was far less capable than it is these days, and the random crashes.  Something you absolutely don't want to happen during a firmware update.

That said, depending on what micro-controller the 2600+ uses, there probably already is a flashing utility for it.

This is awesome! I love the 2600 plus so far. Been rebuilding my collection of 2600 and 7800 carts from my youth. Any chance Robot Tank from Activision gets working in this update? Haven't had much luck getting it to work. I also have two copies of Pitfall for the 2600 and they both run, but there is a lot of static in the sound. Both of my carts were cleaned. Looking forward to this update!
