Is there any improvement in Paddle support? On my system the emulation would move in chunks rather than pixel by pixel. This video shows this issue it did the same thing with my system.

I believe that what you are experiencing is video lag due to your display device.

Hey John, for this one...

...Crazy Brix swaps controls via the difficulty switches. Can you please try again with joystick plugged in, and switching the first-player difficulty switch if it doesn't work?

Nope, there's no unusual tech in Popeye. With some more bug reports for other homebrew carts, we will hopefully see a pattern and narrow it down. There's also the possibility that Popeye might work for someone else, if it's a dirty cart, fitment issue, edge-case timing, etc., so more reports for reported-failed carts is helpful too.

I have Popeye as well. I will test it when I get back on the 4th

Thanks to all here at Atari Age for feedback provided on the Atari 2600+.

We have a beta update to the Emulation and Dumper chip ready that I've been taking about for a while on the main 2600+ AA thread.

I've had lots of offers from people offering to test the update. Up until now its been tested internally with a limited amount of carts, I've sent it out to a few peers tonight who I know have got big collections. Its the breadth of cartridges out there that we internally just dont have easy access to - such a massive amount of carts with all their variations that need checking.

So if anyone here on AA wants to give the update a test with their own carts please post your interest in this thread and I will send the files and instructions to you over the next few days. You will need a Windows Laptop/PC to do the update, its not the most elegant process but should be all done in a few minutes.

Some details on the update;

2600 Changes

Dumper:

  • Fix for Realsports boxing
  • Enable Circus Convoy to boot (Also requires 1.1 Emulator update)
  • Enable CBS Ram Plus cartridge to boot - Omega Race tested (booster grip not tested), Tunnel Runner and Mountain King not tested (Also requires 1.1 Emulator update)

Emulator:

  • Change PAL colour palette to z26
  • PAL / NTSC cartridge auto detect to display at appropiate 50 or 60hz
  • Reversal of Difficulty Switches

7800 Changes

Dumper:

  • Support for unknown cartridges (linear and bank switched)
  • Removed clashing NTSC/PAL cartridge entries from known list (now handled as "unknown")
  • Increased maximum cartridge size
  • Increased dumper read timeout  (support larger cartridges)

Emulator:

  • Fix for swapped controller buttons
  • Pause support via Color/B&W switch (may behave inconsistently depending on cartridge)
  • Significant updates to Pokey sound chip support
  • Support for additional Pokey configurations (@4000, @800, @450, etc.)
  • Yamaha YM2151 sound chip support
  • Support for 7800 expansion module (XM)
  • Updated palettes (contributed by Trebor @ AtariAge)
  • Partial cartridge hash detection (compatibility with dumper)
  • Cartridge probing for Pokey and YM sound chips (compatibility with dumper)
  • Cartridge header database with entries from known carts
  • Improved cartridge header support
  • Compatibility with larger bank switched cartridges
  • Maria double buffered line RAM support
  • Maria background color fix
  • Maria color kill support
  • Maria PAL display area fix
  • Overall improved cycle accuracy (including Maria)
  • Added support for several new opcodes
  • Z flag fix when in decimal mode
  • Multiple memory map fixes
  • RIOT interrupt mirror fix
  • Force PAL mode controller escape sequence

What our intention is with this beta update is to receive feedback on whether all of the above works with your cartridges. Development is kind of swift and we will most likely be finding elements from testing that need tweaking, highly likely we'll be releasing further builds till we are satisfied the update can lose its beta status, then we will move onto a subsequent update to address matters that still need resolving still.

Thanks Ben

Ben,

I'd love to give this a try if I could.  Not sure what you need from me but I'm more than willing to deploy this to my 2600+

Very interested.

I have a large collection original 2600 cartridges consisting from Tele-Game cartidges to M-Network with a few off brand 3rd partying carts such as Apollo and USGames.

So I can test a wide range of cartridge compatibility.  Also in that wide range, I have just about every Activison and Imagic cartridge produced.

I also have all of the 7800 cartridges that were available in the day.

I do not have any homebrew carts of any type or multicarts for either system

I have about 80 carts (including RSB, some home brews, and some 7800 titles), and am happy to test the update. I think I have a few PAL carts as well in some things that came with me from Australia to Canada (I just need to visit the closet this weekend and dig them out).

So on you system it moves pixel by pixel? I moved it pretty slowly and couldn't get it to do that.

Video Olympics, Medieval Mayham, Solar Storm, Marble Craze and others run fine.

BUT Super Breakout and Kaboom give you a jerky paddle on very same setup (same paddles, same TV in game mode) they jump pixels and it is no fun to play.

This has been reported by many players, so the Yeti does exist 😊

I read once in a thread about acceleration settings in Stella. I would guess some fine tuning could help here?

With no access to UI, a fix would need to detect games with Parkinsons desease and change the paddle settings?

Thanks I was beginning to think I needed crazy pills. I only tested on Breakout and it was disappointing. If it is working well on other games that sounds fixable I just hope they are aware of it. Great that Medieval Mayham works.

You are definitely not taking your crazy pills, my platform breakout moves in chunks just like the video as well as the ball too. Furthermore every game I play through the plus has a lag involved. This affects my game play and unfortunately I find myself going back to my Junior just to be able to play the games properly. I have tried the plus on two digital TV's as well as through a CRT and the lag and chunky movement is still present each time. Yes hopefully Atari are aware of this and it can be fixed in a future update.

If you have a Starplex controller, can you try 7800 Asteroids or Bobs Asteroids Deluxe with it? Thanks.

I can confirm that same issue.  The paddles in Kaboom and Super Breakout are "jerky".  Same paddles.  Same Game Mode TV setting.

It is especially noticeable in Super Breakout.  Compare the real 2600 to the 2600+ and you will see the player at the bottom moves nice and smoothly on the original 2600 (pixel by pixel), but it "jumps" two or three pixels when you move on the 2600+.
