Was Mario the bad guy the whole time?

Recommended Posts

King Koopa: Kidnaps (allegedly) Princess Toadstool against her will, does zero harm to her (that we know of)

Mario: Kills hundreds of mostly defenseless creature along the way to "rescue" a woman who we are only *assuming* wants Mario to save him (how do we know she even likes Mario? maybe she gives him a kiss at the end out of pity and feels obliged.) Most of the creatures Mario kills were minding their own business when Mario shows up. Some of them just aimlessly walk to their own deaths. Mario does untold amount of property damage to all the bricks he sees along the way. That's not very nice is it? Also, what's with all the coin collecting? I get that it gives him immortality, but it's kinda suspicious isn't it? Does Mario have a right to those coins? Seems kind of greedy. Also, the guy does shrooms. I'm pretty sure that's illegal.

King Koopa is just defending his property when Mario enters his castle against an intruder, hence the fire he shoots out of his mouth.

Castle Doctrine for ole Bowser, eh?

I don't know, I wouldn't call any of the creatures defenseless.  They kill Mario upon contact and of course later on, you've got Lakitu straight up throwing spiky balls at you.  Not to mention the hammers and fireballs.  If they didn't want to get crushed under Mario's foot or die by fire, they shouldn't support their boss who kidnapped someone.  They started it and deserve what they get.

Most of these misconceptions could be cleared up if you read the instructions. It mentions at several points that Koopa has put the the mushroom kingdom under a spell and kidnapped Princess Toadstool and her mushroom retainers.

The Princess, as well as her mushroom retainers, are being held in one of the castles by the turtle tribe.…

Princess of the Mushroom Kingdom, she is the only one who can break the spell of the evil Koopa king.

Mario isn’t breaking bricks, he is freeing citizens of the mushroom kingdom turned into bricks/(invisible)

Mario's Friends
If you come across mushrooms who have been turned into bricks or made invisible, they reward you by giving you a power boost.

It isn’t King Koopa property, and Koopa’s minions aren’t minding their own business. Traitors and enemy Soldiers

The Mushroom Kingdom is made up of a number of worlds, and each world si divided into 4 areas. …
Along the way are mountains, pits, sea, turtle soldiers, and a host of traps and riddles.

Little Goomba

A mushroom who betrayed the Mushroom Kingdom.

Koopa Troopa
Soldier of the Turtle Empire, his orders are to find and destroy Mario.

I often think of things like that in games, the "what if" type things. Like how you always teleport to the middle of an asteroid field on asteroids and just start blasting away. Sure, they will kill you, but hey, you just showed up in their territory and start blasting away. The alien space ship is just trying to protect their rock collection. After all, you have a space ship, that can even teleport, even on 2600, why not just travel places their aren't rocks?

Its just video games, have fun with it, but us 70-80's kids really got to work our imaginations.

Sure, but earlier Mario chained a gorilla inside of a cage while whipping birds so that they would torment a baby gorilla.

Isn’t it all a matter of perspective? If you’re an ape in his cage, of course Mario is the bad guy. If you’re Pauline getting hauled up unfinished buildings against your will, DK is no victim. This isn’t that complicated.

How do the birds feel?

Maybe there's a reason we don't see Pauline with Mario from that point onward.

He then grabbed his brother, crawled into the sewers and began kicking to death every animal he could find.

You, the player is the bad guy who smashed all the koopas. Mario did exactly what you made him do.

Oh sure. He was "just following orders". But the sadist had a big old smile on his face as he did each horrible thing.

Merc for hire for real lol. Plus he gets to destroy and loot the local landscape, smashing bricks for money. The reason for the timer (in old games, you were timed) is to get out of the area before the mushroom kingdoms equivalent of un peacekeepers show up and bring Mario up on charges of animal cruelty, mass murder, destruction of property, and looting :D
