Katakis

Hi there!   Move over R-Type, here comes:   Katakis (1988):     Programmer: Manfred Trenz Graphics: Andreas Escher Musician: Chris Hülsbeck   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 93% Lemon64 Rating: 8.4   So, the Rainbow Arts series continues with a title I still love today. Shortly after doing the Giana Sisters graphics, Manfred Trenz switched from artist to programmer. Teaming up with Andreas Escher, the two should create a series of legendary shoot'em ups on the C64, the first being talked

Great Giana Sisters

Hi there!   Move Over Brothers, here's the:   Great Giana Sisters (1987):     Programmer: Armin Gessert Graphics: Manfred Trenz Musician: Chris Hülsbeck   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 96% Lemon64 Rating: 8.5   I didn't have Giana Sisters listed in my Rainbow Arts overview article, because I'm not that big a fan of it these days, but since then I came to the conclusion that it's a title which can impossibly be missing in a series of articles about Rainbow Arts games.   Giana Siste

Hell Nights Festival Review

Hi there!   So, finally I'm able to report from this great festival   First of all, there's two things I learned the hard way this weekend:   1. I'm not used to two 6-7 hour drives within 24 hours. 2. I am used to catch some sleep at night though.   Well, due to a string of events mostly beyond my control, instead of going with my sister to the Back to Future Festival, I ended in Essen with my sister-in-law. As I should learn today, this was in fact the much better deal, as the BtF fes

Legendary Rainbow Arts

Hi there!   With the System 3 series finally outta the door, I thought about doing a series of articles regarding the games of the legendary german developer "Rainbow Arts" next. Since they did well over 50 games during their time and started with a series of really substandard crap, I did some preselection of the titles I have some personal interest to review:   Great Giana Sisters 1987 Katakis 1988 Hard 'n Heavy 1989 Grand Monster Slam 1989 X-Out 1989 Turrican 1990 Turrican II: The F

Turbo Charge

Hi there!   Welcome to System 3s final C64 game:   Turbo Charge (1991):     Programming: Chris Butler Graphics: Chris Butler, Robin Levy Musician: Sean Connolly, Marc Francois   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 96% Lemon64 Rating: 7.6   History: For their final C64 release System 3 hired none less than Chris Butler, who is kinda like the David Crane of the C64. During his active carreer he programmed more than a dozen games and he was especially famous for his Arcade conversions of g

Flimbo's Quest

Hi there!   So I had already canceled the series of System 3 games articles. Well, some recent gaming sessions made me rethink this and cancel the cancellation. Or in other words I feel like writing articles for Flimbo's Quest and Turbo Charge, so the System 3 series is living again!   Violating Chronolaws, this would actually come before Last Ninja 3:   Flimbo's Quest (1990):     Programming: Laurens Van Der Donk, Patrick Witteman, Dave Hogendorf Graphics: Arthur Van Jole, Jacco Van

The Populous Challenge

Hi there!   One of the many things I always wanted to do, is playing completely through Populous:   Back in the day, I made it halfway through the Amiga version, I think I stopped somewhere around world 350-370.   In the past days I've now been checking out some available versions, to see which I actually want to try to beat:   Sega Master System: This is an incredible version, especially considering it's on an 8-Bit system. All the gameplay is there, even some landscapes that where on

Introducing Mega Apocalypse

Hi there!   It's about time to introduce another one of my C64 all-time favourites, the sequel to Crazy Comets:   Mega Apocalypse:     You rarely find that a game's name will already fully describe it, as it is the case here. In C64 terms this really is the Mega Apocalypse, driving the systems capabilities close to meltdown.   Mega Apocalypse is a single screen shoot'em up, that shares some similarities with Asteroids. Your main aim is nearly the same, blowing up everything on the scr

Last Ninja 3

Hi there!   Three years after the 2nd part, System 3 finally completed the series to a trilogy with:   Last Ninja 3(1991):     BUT... it was not the great finale everyone was hoping for   In theory, System 3 did everything right. They hired a superstar team to do the job:   Former Palace programmer Stanley Schembri, who previously did hits like Barbarian, Cauldron II or Antiriad   Also former Thalamus staff, programmers and artists behind cult classics like Armalyte and Hawkeye

Lemon64 "Shoot'em Up, H-Scrolling"

Hi there!   Some might remember my Lemon64 database improvement mission:   When Bob and I discovered that the 244 hits it had for "Shoot'em Up, H-Scrolling" showed many dubious entries, I started to try each of them individually in an effort to sort them out.   By now I managed to make the Lemon team move 4 missorted games into better suited categories, with several more suggestions pending, so currently there's 240 hits for Shoot'em Up, H-Scrolling in the lemon64 database.   So far I ca

Tusker

Rating: 90% Lemon64 Rating: 7.9   Overview: Well, I bet it takes nothing more but a quick glance at the "Tusker" logo to get an idea of what this game is all about. I didn't read the story, but it's quite obvious t

C64 Fort Apocalypse VICE Recording

Hi there!   Just made a first attempt at recording data for a C64 longplay video:   Fort Apocalypse This is a small (100K) package. To use it, unzip it somewhere, then do the following:   - File / Attach Cartridge Image / CRT Image => Choose the Fort Apocalypse CRT from the ZIP   - Snapshot / Load Snapshot Image => Choose fort_start.vsf   - Snapshot / Start-Stop Playback History   Then you should be able to watch it. It's recorded with VICE 1.20 and AFAIK the files sho

C64 Video Longplays

Hi there!   Uh... what is a longplay you ask? Well, It started out a dozen years ago as a monthly feature in the German 64'er magazine I think. (If the idea was just stolen from a foreign mag, I apologize for not knowing it any better )   A classic longplay in the 64'er magazine was a lengthy and very in-depth article or series of articles detailing with lots of screenshots how to beat a certain C64 start to finish. It was also often packed into some sort of story. If you ever read the Clue

Tron Tank Maze Design

Hi there!   I find the design of the maze in the Tank level of the Tron Arcade very interesting:     Not only is it avoiding symmetry, there's also two spots (aside the middle section) where it "violates" the chosen raster.   Tron 2600 Test: Better Proportions: ebivison.zip 2nd Effect: 2600porn.zip Color Melt: Interleaved:   Greetings, Manuel

Live Here Now

Hi there!   This seems interesting. On http://www.liveherenow.co.uk/ can you now preorder a Live CD of a gig that The Damned will play on Wednesday 18th April 2007. Because the gig didn't even happen yet, of course they don't have a tracklist for it.   Still, I'm tempted to blind-buy it. The Damned can't do wrong and it sure might be a nice addition to the other ~25 live CDs/DVDs I bought from them over the years... just need to find a way to hide the purchase from my wife   Greetings, M

The NES has no R-Types!

Hi there!   What I mean, there's no other noteworthy horizontal scrolling sci-fi shoot'em ups on the NES letting you control a space ship, besides Gradius and every other level of Life Force. And a totally ruined Uridium conversion in the form of the Last Star Fighter.   Is that really all? There must be more, no?!?   I'm truly perplexed in case.   Greetings, Manuel

R.I.P. Richard Joseph

Hi there!   Richard Joseph, one of the most famous computer game musicians died on 4th March 2007   From his early C64 tunes for Palace, over his Amiga work for Sensible Software, the Bitmap Brothers and many more, up to Oblivion in 2006 - it's impossible that one hasn't heard some of his compositions while playing video games.   To get an overview of his impressive lifework check out his Rap-Sheet at Mobygames.   Greetings, Manuel

The Last Ninja 2 (+Remix)

Hi there!   So, just when you thought your job was done, System 3 delivered   The Last Ninja 2 (1988):     Programming: John Twiddy Graphics: Hugh Riley Musician: Matt Gray   Ratings: Zzap! Rating: 94% (Lemon is down at the time I'm typing this)   Overview: The Last Ninja 2 is one of those sequels that is mostly just "more" of the same. Hugh Rileys graphix for example are just as excellent as in the first game, just look at the "beautiful" drug laboratory pictured above. The m

Hi there!   Well, it's been a while since since I announced the System 3 series of articles.
