OK kids, 112,800 level 5

Damn, this game gets hard.

So many fire monsters on the girders and forget about the elevators, no room for error.

Beer gave me the courage though.

Gonna go finish X-Men 3 and see if this score holds for a while.

Good luck my fellow Marios.

Actually, I already have a copy of Xevious. :)

Heh...I went to the video game store that us Chicago area folk (jbanes, etc.) frequent after work in hopes of finding an INTV System 3 to replace my ailing Intellivision....no luck, but I did notice they had a ton of new additions to the Atari 7800 shelf -- including one copy of Donkey Kong Jr. :)

Here's my latest score...post-1050-1169873551_thumb.jpg

Atari Pro System High Score Competition

Invade the planet Earth! It's time to defend the Earth from its original inhabitants and claim it as our own once and for all. Around the world, radar is picking up deadly Xevion that have come to reclaim their planet, and we must stop the at all costs. Today we celebrate our independence day! We send the attackers back to Xevious!

This week's game:

Namco's Xevious

Difficulty: Intermediate, switch positions are optional.

Recommended Controls: Pro Line Joystick

Challenge:

None posted

Congratulations to jwierer and Dauber for meeting the challenge in Pac-Man.

Next week we'll start with Pac Man Collection. Pac Man Collection will probably run more than one week, but with setting changes each week. If you've got Pac-Man Collection, post a note of it with your score. I know some folks may still be waiting for Pac Man collection, so we may go for Centipede in the mean time. If you've got other suggestions, let's hear 'em! (Otherwise it's Karateka...)

New records:

godzillajoe: Joust 149,850

Last week's most agile apes were:

1. Dauber: 99,900

2. Atarifever: 75,900

3. LarcenTyler: 6400

General shmup tips:

I know very little about Xevious, but here are some general tips I follow during shmup play:

Keep moving. I've found that if I move in all eight directions on the joystick I can establish a rhythm. I'm able to destroy targets methodically from left to right, moving up and down to avoid enemy fire.

When you come on a hardened target, get as close as possible without getting shot, and unload the most powerful unlimited ammo you have onto it. Move up and down to avoid being shot, but don't move side to side until the target is destroyed (this is actually a trick to releasing Raiden's fairies).

Try scanning the screen a few inches above your ship. This will alert you to incoming enemies before they get into point blank range.

I normally do a lot better (my lowest recorded high score on Expert is higher than this), but I got to the boss ship and blew it up while I had all of my lives left, and one of those little ball things turned into a bullet and shot me down after the boss blew up. As a result, it made me redo that area again. Long story short, I completely lost my composure, though not my capacity for cursing, and lost every single life in that section. I'm only posting this to start it off.

Don't forget that difficulty switches can be used to alternate between one and two button control schemes.

If you have a two button 7800 stick you can use one for cannon and one for bombs instead of the default one button for both mode.

I'll fix the difficulty. Thanks.

Know how the games seem to be harder when you're competing in HSC?

That didnt happen to me this time. My best ever!

219,060

At 150K I had 7 extra Solvalou. Lost most of them just before the 3rd Andor Genesis mother ship.

I was finding the hidden citadels/domes pretty good too, & the 1st 2 hidden flags.

Atari Pro System High Score Competition

It's time for a classic. There was a gambler who played Pac-Man before each time he hit the casino. If he scored well, he went to gamble. If he scored low, he went home.

A number of people have worked to bring us a collection of eight Pac Man titles on one cartridge. This week is in honor of those who worked on this compilation of games. During the next few weeks, we will be exploring the challenge of the eight variations found on Pac-Man Collection!

This week's game:

PacManPlus's Pac-Man Collection

Difficulty: Both switches in the B position. Throughout the next few weeks, Plus and Fast modes will be on, and three lives will be used. This week, the game type is “Pac-Man”.

Recommended Controls: CX-10 Atari “Heavy Sixer” Joystick, RSI joystick

Challenge:

Get to the highest fruit. This week it is a pancake.

Congratulations to jwierer and Dauber for meeting the challenge in Pac-Man.

Next week we'll continue with Pac Man Collection. Pac Man Collection will probably run more than one week, but with setting changes each week. If you're using a stand alone version of Pac-Man, make sure it has the same rules and has the plus and fast modes.

New records:

godzillajoe: Joust 149,850

Last week's best pilots:

1. RJ: 219,060

2. godzillajoe: 119,420

3. Atarifever 44,410

4. LarcenTyler: 34,720

Pac-Man strategy:

The strategies for each section of the cart are as individual as the games themselves. In Pac-Man, there are three distinct patterns known as the Cherries, Mid-Fruit, and Apple patterns. The cherries pattern works for the first two boards, the Mid Fruit for three boards after that, and from there it's Apple pattern 'til the cows come home.

Misdirection: Try running completely around a wall section to get where you're going. This will lead the ghosts in odd directions.

Grab the fruit when possible—it turns the monsters both invisible and blue.

Try to leave some energizers until you've cleared most of the board. At that point, lure the ghosts near an energizer and clean up.

Actually I may have "lost" in the end, I tried some Xenophobe afterward & frustratedly bashed up BOTH my Pro-Line sticks.

IIRC there was a tableful of them at MGC, guess thats where Im headed first...

Anyone want the innards? (all but the black casings)
