Cleaning out the Attic...

I used to work on 3584s and STK silos, for real...

I haven't brought myself to tossing out any significant dot matrix printers, yet.

The lasers are history.

You may not have thought of it, but dot matrix printers make great robot parts. They are especially useful because of the fine degree of control that you have, via printer control codes, over a standard parallel port. I used to work with giant, very expensive robotic SCSI tape autoloaders, & the internals were very similar to the mechanisms that are commonly found in dot matrix printers.

Here's some video links to describe what I mean:

Neat, right?

Nice rainy day hacking project, since you have the know-how, and plenty of parts.

Just think of the possibilities, the next link should really stir your imagination... ha, the whole town's lighting should dim when you power on one of these suckers:

I have accumulated 'way more Atari things than I need, so I'd like to send them out to someone who may use them. No conceivable scenario would see me use 40 1200XLs...

When I get done with all this, I will certainly be in the Atari 8-bit scene - and, I'll be able to find some of this cool stuff.

Bob, to asking a straight question....you are only getting shot of the atari gear/kit that is no longer needed (i.e surplus to requirements) and your not getting shot off all your atari kit/gear (i.e getting out of the atari scene)

maybe we should organise a pilgrimage to the sacred grounds that is bob's house ;')

(first 40 there get a 1200XL ;'D )

sloopy.

I'd really be up for that road trip! Heck, we could car pool. ;)

I'm on my way to see him a couple hours!!! I'll take a pic of 40 1200XL's (minus 1 for me) and post for you all to drool over, if I can.

PS I'm 45 minutes from Bob's place, and 3 blocks from Best Electronics, Atari Heaven, possibly!?!?! lol.

Bob was kind enough to let me see is VAST collection of Atari items. I was amazed, beside being a great guy!! (very knowledgeable!!!), his collection is large and deep. As he describes it, he bought some of the inventory of an Atari dealership that had folded in San Jose some years ago. I saw and touched stuff that I have only seen in brochures, and some not even in those!! He has many 1200xl's around set up for different tasks, and others for experimenting and testing. He is good at building circuit designs, and has several good ideas for Atari projects. He is close to finishing one that looks very exciting for all the XL series machines!!

I respect his privacy and will not detail items or specifics. I'll leave that for Bob, if he chooses. But I must say I saw floored. No scratch that, I could barley see the floor, at the incredible, and organized array of equipment I saw. I feel privileged, and look forward to seeing him again in the future!

Thanks Bob!!!! :)

ps I was so awe-struck that I total forgot to take any pic's, sorry!!

The 1200XLs are beginning to ship. The first ten requestors have been contacted and the machines are ready, waiting on responses. Ten more will go out in a week or so - as I confirm operational machines. We'll keep this up until I run out of viable systems.

I'm reducing my storage capacity and have a whole bunch of monitors and printers. Mostly mono monitors, Epson FX printers, some DeskJets, a few HP laser printers (III & IIID, 4MV - that kind of stuff) (an HP 7475 plotter?)

I also seem to have more 1050s, 800s, and 1200XLs than I am allowed under the Geneva Convention.

The monitors and printers will go to e-waste. The 8-bit stuff will get stored, although I think it would be best if some of it, at least, found a home where it might be used by someone.
