Well.. I WOULD post my thoughts on this so-far excellent conversion, but I guess I'll wait for the next BIN/A78 file to be posted. One minor note: Fire should reference the last direction pushed, not require the joystick to be actively pushed. (If I moved left last, the gun will fire that direction even when I stop.)

Not if you're mimicking the arcade - which I believe is the intent here. In Berzerk and Frenzy you need to actively push the joystick in the direction you want to fire.

Side Note:

Atari 2600 port of Berzerk does not require the joystick to be actively pushed.

Atari 5200 port of Berzerk does require the joystick to be actively pushed, same as Arcade, and same as this port.

ColecoVision port of Frenzy does require the joystick to be actively pushed as well.

Hi Guys - thanks for the compliments :) You guys, as always, are too kind. ;)

Thank you, Trebor - and you are correct as it is the arcade version I am trying to duplicate.

Regarding shooting and the joystick: Being that I am trying to come as close to the arcade as possible, It is not within the scope of what I want to accomplish to emulate the 2600 version of how the players fire. I'm sorry :(

Thanks again,

Bob

  • Refine robot shot AI so the player isn't massacared upon room entry

Now, you did it. Instant hack established.

Atari 7800 Frenzy/Berzerk "Massacre Edition" Hack.

Instead of vibrating green body, your character has a red blood explosion when hit, robot lasers are replaced with ridiculously fast throwing knives...

That 'Salem Frost' guy would eat this up for a Oct 31st release down the road...LOL.

Completely unrelated, but great avatar profholt82.

I had the transformed title screen of the game as my avatar for the longest time.

Now to completely de-rail...Wish the Blue-Sky Rangers privately held/unreleased version for the ColecoVision makes it to the public someday.

Then to somewhat bring it back on track...A 7800 version would be the best thing ever.

Finally, back on track...Playing Berzerk/Frenzy is just awesome, already has a polished look and feel, despite a slew of things that need to be accomplished per Bob's list. One of the many things I love about Bob's games is the gameplay/mechanics are always so spot on. They 'feel right' and handle beautifully.

It's one of the many factors that make his games, undoubtedly including Frenzy/Berzerk, one of those most own and don't want to stop playing.

I think I got it!!!!

I was sitting in the bathroom :ponder: and I thought about taking all seven x and y coordinates of each shot and moving through the entire object list only once, checking against the x and y values of each shot. What makes this easier is I only take the tip of the shot, so there is a single set of x and y coordinates for each shot object to check against.

:)

I need to try this.

Thanks,

Bob

I was in the bathroom hanging a picture and i fell and bumped my head on the toilet.Thats when i came up with the idea for the flux capaciter..............some of the greatest ideas in human history are invented while thinking in the bathroom.

Probably true, but not that example since it was science fiction. ;-)

:) Thanks!

Should have a bin to post in the next day or two... including Otto

Things to do:

- Change Berzerk Robot AI to be like the arcade version of Berzerk and not like the arcade version of Frenzy

- Make 'Crazy Otto' take 3 hits to die instead of 1

- Bonus lives

- More collision detection

- HSC

- Sound

- Voice

this is a tough one!... Also thinking more about the Dark Tower/Adventure/Advanced D&D: Cloudy Mountain game =)
