David Alexander
I won this system on eBay for $13, shipping was about $80, customs about $25. But all in all still a good deal. The box is really huge. For comparison Steve is 13" tall. 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/255618-the-atari-5200-podcast-new-podcast/#findComment-3566782 Share on other sites

+therealbountybob
We featured an article about the 5200 Pod Cast from Captain Bob and a review of the port of the 5200's Frisky Tom in the last issue of Pro© Atari Magazine. The Magazine is mainly about the 8-bit home computer but 5200 fans are welcome to contribute 2 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/255618-the-atari-5200-podcast-new-podcast/#findComment-3593521 Share on other sites

David Alexander
I love a good Atari Podcast! I can't wait to give it a listen! Looks like a lot of great games. I have been thinking of buying a 5200. We recorded episode 1 last night, so now I am busy with editing. You wont regret buying a 5200 as long as you get one of the alternative controller options for the console. We spent a good amount of time talking to Steve of the Wired Up Retro YouTube channel so there's a lot of good info coming your way. bohoki
it was fun i wish i could do a podcast about either going to aladdins castle in the mall and dealing with bullys or going to chuck e cheese and dealing with the snot dripping babies but i have an nasaly voice and i sound like a more annoying sal rosenberg ooh and this really cool place near sacramento called sams town where they had the light shotguns for skeet and the indy 500 game that was like a movie and they had a candy shop right off the arcade that was combination of the willy wonka candy room and an old timey general store oh and they had the actual prop human cage from the planet of the apes movie me and my brother spend $10 in quarters to beat teenage mutant ninja turtles i too went through the transition to the nes pad and thought what the heck i'm not a lefty i got used to it quick then i got the genesis and its control was a bit bigger to hold then the snes came out and i still cant get my fingers to work with shoulder buttons. i am still feeble with the playstations and xboxes the crazy makopad and the pc ultra racer http://www.ebay.com/itm/InterAct-UltraRacer-PC-SV-284-Racing-Controller-15-Pin-/201671865267?hash=item2ef49473b3:g:6qAAAOSwmLlX3zjHwell we have the n64 to thank for those interact was not going to let their mold go to waste so they made pc guts to fit inside but once again you need trim controls for each system has slightly different tolerances cant believe how many shout outs you guys gave me i'm sorry for the crudity of th construction you got one of my early ones and i didnt put plug housings i suggest you find an electronic supplier in canadia it just makes unplugging easier and makes it look slightly less unprofessional i personally never had a problem with the analog stick its always been the buttons that fail and when the start button stops well you are done (except for robotron cause it starts with fire) for years i had a controller with the top bezel off and pressed the start traces with a penny and drilled a couple holes in the side and put in a couple momentary buttons (why didnt i put one in for start? well back then i didnt understand how the matrix array worked i didnt invent the use of a couple capacitors to adapt the pc controllers i just started making a couple for myself and i would end up with a controller and sell it on ebay or here with an adapter cause you cant give a pc gameport controller away but heck sell it with an adapter and you can at least break even with shipping it took to get the thing to me you would not believe the number of controllers i have had i swear at least 30 of them. but back in about 1996 before mame there was this tmnt arcade emulator so i made an arcade machine out of an old cabinet and i rigged up with resistors on the stick to replicate analogness with the digital sticks and then that led me to making my own arcade sticks for the 5200 but all the crap i made is another story as for your wish for a spinner i'm not sure how tempest responds to a tracball because the tracball is the key it is an optical wheel so if you could get some kind of rc car wheel to roll sideways on the x rod also between 95-98 there was the gameport sticks that used windows drivers and they generally did not need to be calibrated or have trim controls since they became a serial device the use of the gameport in the system could reduce its speed by up to 25% because it was always being polled even when no stick was attached also more common than the 5200 wico is the apple 2 wico but the way apples utilized buttons they pretty much need rewiring to work ooh another fun thing is if you get 2 original gravis gamepads you can switch one to righthand d-pad and rubberband them together to play robotron and space dungeon . since their buttons are recessed they sit together well i am a bit confuesed as to why the podcast loops here http://directory.libsyn.com/episode/index/id/4683235 ps another funny story a friend had a colecovision and i thought wow this looks great i think i remember frenzy and how it was better than any berzerk ive ever seen and i begged my dad for one and he said it will be a cold day in hell before i buy a computer from the connecticut leather company i guess i am glad he didnt cause the my 2600 was in use well into the nes era i got tax avoiders for my birthday and i thought it was the coolest game ever Edited September 21, 2016 by bohoki 1 Quote Link to comment https://forums.atariage.com/topic/255618-the-atari-5200-podcast-new-podcast/#findComment-3598517 Share on other sites
ave1
Great comments, bohoki. I for one would be sure to enjoy any and all stories of your 80's videogame experiences Yeah, the joystick on my original 5200 controller still works great and the buttons are definitely the problem areas. I am going to have to show the two Gravis Gamepads connected together on one of my future Wired-Up Retro episodes- It's really cool for the Space Dungeon and Robotron games.Regarding a spinner- It would be great if someone who's knowledgable like you could rig up a conversion of the 5200 Trakball into a spinner. I for one would be quite interested in doing a mod.
