It's interesting that there are so many systems on list, including many that I've never heard of, but I still see some missing. Maybe I'll fire up my Laseractive and get that on the list for 2023!

On the other hand, you have a lot of catching up if you so like. I'd suggest starting with the C64 version of Solar Fox to see if it at all holds up to the 2600 version.

Thanks @carlsson for all of your amazing work.  From the system list you gave, the lowest I have played was Atari Video Pinball and the highest I have never played (which might come as a shock) is the Commodore 64.  Hopefully this new year I will be able to experience and play more systems.  Take care and best of luck to everyone in the new year.

The C64 version is actually quite different and I much prefer the Atari 2600 version, though I echo your statement that the C64 is a great starting point for exploring 80s computer games! Speaking of which, as much as I love Solar Fox how is it so far ahead of every other game on the list?

EDIT: or rather, this year. Kaboom holds an incredible lead over everything else. Solar Fox gained on it by some 8000 minutes this year, so at the current rate, it will overtake Kaboom in the year 2046 @_@

I was 100% satisfied with the 2600.  It was  great.  At the time, I had no idea why others would play any other systems.  Then many years later I saw my nephew playing Super Mario Bros for the NES and whoa, a new addiction for me.

On the previous page, I wrote that we played 237053 minutes, but we're 237204 minutes ahead of last year. That can be due to entries moved between the classic and modern tracker. Out of the 2312 different games, 920 were new to the tracker. That is nearly 40% new entries, and not all of them are modern homebrews! A handful of those games have 0 minutes though, used as placeholders when two games with the same or similar name exist.

It is interesting to see where Hunchy 2 is on the Atari 2600.  I thought I was closer to 10,000.

 

I've been playing Kaboom! recently and it might make a comeback in 2023.   But hopefully I will reach my goal without having to add too many minutes.

Damn, I'm not sure if I should feel happy or sad that I'll get Out Zone in the top 10 arcade games by the end of next month for sure, or maybe the end of this month, probably all by myself, as I doubt (m)any others have tracked it. My time this week will already push it past 1000 minutes by a small amount, but it's pretty cold in the Astro room, so I haven't really been playing a lot recently.

 

Slap Fight will probably end up near the top as well. I was playing it for score a few months ago, so I played it for a decent amount of time daily, but I am taking a break from playing it for score right now, so I'm not sure when I'll get back to it.

The way I would phrase it is that the games changed with the PS2 and they've stayed about the same ever since.  Same genres, same controller, network play.  We are only just now getting to something that is different with VR, no media, and always connected experiences.  If the trackers were renamed to "Pre Crash," "Golden Age," and "Platinum Age" that would leave room for something to come along later that you could call anything you want, and we'd never have to talk about classic vs modern or moving systems between the trackers again.

 

That being said, an argument could be made to move the GBA to the classic tracker and the Dreamcast to modern.  I'd be happy with either of those moves (or none).

It is much easier to split on launch year than technical capacity or feel. We have several low-res and handheld systems in the modern tracker, released just the other year. Those would by definition become classic systems because they reimplement Asteroids and Centipede, though with current day technology.
