Week 45

Top games

1. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Gamecube) - 788 min.
2. Retro Bowl College (Browser based) - 690 min. (#1)
3. Metroid: Zero Mission (GBA) - 652 min.
4. Retro Bowl College (Android) - 490 min. (#6)
5. Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Master Quest (Gamecube) - 461 min.
6. Almora Darkosen (Android) - 317 min.
7. Days Gone (PS4) - 210 min.
8. Wandersong (PC) - 127 min.
9. Maximus 2 (Android) - 110 min.
10. Deltarune Chapter 1 (PC) - 100 min. (#8)
10. Snood (Android) - 100 min.

Top systems

1. Gamecube (2 games) - 1249 min.
2. Android (9 games) - 1187 min. (#2)
3. Browser based (2 games) - 709 min. (#1)
4. GBA (2 games) - 682 min. (#7)
5. PC (2 games) - 227 min. (#8)
6. PS4 (1 game) - 210 min.
7. iOS (3 games) - 114 min. (#3)
8. Switch (2 games) - 44 min. (#4)
9. Xbox Series S/X (1 game) - 35 min.

Total 4457 minutes and 24 different games (of which 8 new) on 9 different systems, with 7 participants.

With four out of the top five entries, Legend of Zelda and Retro Bowl College battle it out, with Ocarina of Time a little more than 1.5 hours ahead of the browser version of Retro Bowl College. The difference between the top two systems Gamecube and Android is just over an hour, after counting all the times reported during the week when I've been a bit too busy to get both the classic and modern stats done in one week.

No changes to the 50, 150, 300 Hour Clubs. This week the only game with more than 3000 minutes of total playing was Duolingo.

Week of 11/13/23 - 11/19/23

iOS

Duolingo - 72

Jumbline 2 - 28

PC

Deltarune Chapter 1 - 75

Deltarune Chapter 2 - 110

Total time = 285 minutes

I finished Chapter 1. So far Chapter 2 seems like it's quite a bit bigger than Chapter 1 which really only takes 2-3 hours to beat unless you're a completionist.

This week (12th-18th) I played:

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - Master Quest for GameCube - 708 minutes

Progress: I played from the beginning of the forest temple until part way through the Spirit Temple where I got stuck and had to look up a guide. The remainder of the game will be posted in next week's times as it has now been finished during this new week.

A lot less for me this week.

Apple iOS:

subpar pool - 127 minutes

IMG_8525.thumb.png.9fe6a810ced51ecdee933028c67d7ac2.png

I think I've gotten really good at this and also I think I am about done with it. Great fun while it lasted, though.

Blaze Evercade:

Full Void - 246 minutes

IMG_8422.thumb.jpeg.8dde7af87ccd7b4e982a11797cb32da9.jpeg

Almost fully completed the first single-game cart to hit Evercade yet. It is a very interesting and well crafted game. As @roots.genoa put it, it is a short but brilliant flashback to another world.

Browser:

Suika Game - 76 minutes

IMG_8562.thumb.jpeg.1061ffe23127aaebc88ececbca25ec1b.jpeg

Nintendo Game Boy Advance:

Nonono Puzzle Chailien - 35 minutesIMG_8586.thumb.jpeg.35a7e511997210dbf22fa8f86f020277.jpeg

Nintendo Switch:

Auralux Constellations - 45 minutes

IMG_8383.thumb.jpeg.2102f4c7bdd057a6d6d380a64bed0955.jpeg

That graph shows a single game that was a deadlock for a full fifteen minutes until I gave up and quit.

Suika Game - 15 minutes

Tetris 99 - 5 minutes

2. Full Void (Blaze Evercade) - 246 min.
3. Fallout New Vegas (Xbox 360) - 241 min.
4. Dead Space 3 (Xbox 360) - 207 min.
5. Ico (PS2) - 206 min.
6. Escape from Monkey Island (PS2) - 131 min.
7. subpar pool (iOS) - 127 min.
8. Alien Hominid (GBA) - 118 min.
9. Deltarune Chapter 2 (PC) - 110 min.
10. Wandersong (PC) - 108 min. (#8)

Top systems

1. Gamecube (1 game) - 708 min. (#1)
2. Xbox 360 (2 games) - 448 min.
3. PS2 (2 games) - 337 min.
4. PC (3 games) - 293 min. (#5)
5. Blaze Evercade (1 game) - 246 min.
6. iOS (3 games) - 227 min. (#7)
7. GBA (4 games) - 216 min. (#4)
8. Browser based (1 game) - 76 min. (#3)
9. Switch (3 games) - 65 min. (#8)
10. Arcade (1 game) - 30 min.

Total 2646 minutes and 21 different games (of which 7 new) on 10 different systems, with 6 participants.

As all the Retro Bowls are absent this week, Ocarina of Time - Master Quest increases its count a bit and moves into first place, well ahead the rest. It also helps the Gamecube to remain the most played system, again by a margin a bit over 4 hours.

The totals are a bit on the low side, actually fourth lowest in number of minutes this season, but surely the numbers will increase by the end of this year.

Wikipedia writes that "the emulated port runs at a resolution of 640×480, quadruple that of the original, and supports progressive scan."

So yes, the code may be emulated but if the display generates a higher resolution, when does an emulation become a distinct game?

I would say if the rom has been edited to do things that the original console couldn't, like say Image Fight being updated to support twin sticks, that definitely makes it modern. But for something that is purely done in the emulator like upscaling IMO it's not really different.

Man, what a beautiful and frustrating game. I loved it, but got stuck on the last boss and never finished it. If you like racing at all check out Racing Gears Advance by the same company, it's amazing!

Scurge: Hive is a really beautiful and impressive looking game for the GBA, but you're definitely right about it being quite difficult and for some reason it's just kinda failing to hook me. I did play a few more minutes of it this week, but then I decided I just felt like playing some Game Boy Color and Sega Genesis games instead and got distracted

Game Boy Advance

Castlevania: Circle of the Moon - 21 minutes

Scurge: Hive - 9 minutes

PS2

Escape from Monkey Island 613

PC

Wandersong 152

X360

Dead Space 3 670

Fallout New Vegas 800

I finished Wandersong and Dead Space 3.   I wrote up my thoughts about finishing Wandersong and Ico here:

The short, short version - Ico and Wandersong both get a 3 out of 5 from me, but I'd still give Wandersong a thumbs down overall.

Not much here.

Apple iOS:

holedown - 81 minutes

IMG_0693.thumb.png.1f6deab082351d604ee250482163f09c.png

The predecessor to subpar pool was something I bounced off earlier but found a lot more approachable on revisit. Functionally completed the game though I would really like to get up to 99 balls in play in the black hole.

Browser:

Suika Game - 16 minutes

IMG_1211.thumb.png.dad25ec28dd6981603848b419973dd6a.png

Saw a watermelon for the first time in ages.

Switch:

Good Night Knight - 15 minutes

Pinball FX3 - 30 minutes

Tetris 99 - 5 minutes

This Way Madness Lies - 50 minutes

IMG_8658.thumb.jpeg.36ebbebb8bd04a015a8be038cafc334c.jpeg

To Be or Not To Be - 45 minutes

Some Shakespeareian silliness.

1. Dragon Quest XI (PS4) - 2561 min.
2. Fallout New Vegas (Xbox 360) - 800 min. (#3)
3. Dead Space 3 (Xbox 360) - 670 min. (#4)
4. Escape from Monkey Island (PS2) - 613 min. (#6)
5. Wandersong (PC) - 152 min. (#10)
6. holedown (iOS) - 81 min.
7. This Way Madness Lies (Switch) - 50 min.
8. To Be or Not To Be (Switch) - 45 min.
9. Pinball FX3 (Switch) - 30 min.
10. Castlevania: Circle of the Moon (GBA) - 21 min.

Top systems

1. PS4 (1 game) - 2561 min.
2. Xbox 360 (2 games) - 1470 min. (#2)
3. PS2 (1 game) - 613 min. (#3)
4. PC (1 game) - 152 min. (#4)
5. Switch (5 games) - 145 min. (#9)
6. iOS (1 game) - 81 min. (#6)
7. GBA (2 games) - 30 min. (#7)
8. Browser based (1 game) - 16 min. (#8)

Total 5068 minutes and 14 different games (of which 4 new) on 8 different systems, with 4 participants.

Dragon Quest XI goes from a total of 150 to 2711 minutes, and with more than 50% of the total minutes this week obviously gets the title. Four of the games from last week follow, and for once just over 20 minutes is enough to make the top 10. Again on the systems side, the PS4 makes up for those 50% with the Xbox 360 at 29%, PS2 at 12% and the remaining five systems sharing 9% of the minutes.

Fallout New Vegas (Xbox 360) joins the 150 Hours Club with a total of 9255 minutes, which also is the highest total number of minutes for either of the games featured this week.

So, I was away for a bit for a trip with the family to Lima, Peru as I noted in the Classic Console Discussion.  However, I did do some gaming while I was away.  I will leave it to carlsson to figure out exactly how we wants to record this.

My times from 11/19 to 11/29 were:

DS

1) 007: Bloodstone - 15 minutes

2) Meteos - 10 minutes

Android

1) Retro Bowl - 120 minutes

Interesting selection for me this week.

Apple iOS:
holedown - 170 minutes

IMG_1234.thumb.jpeg.049b7f654200a8a69097292e09092a25.jpeg

Still haven't gotten to 99 balls.

Blaze Evercade:

Duke Nukem 1&2 - 125 minutes

IMG_1325.thumb.jpeg.fd871943db697bf29abd222ce6148ec8.jpeg
This may look like the DOS original and in fact it is a close replication in classic mode with stuttering scrolling and all, but I mostly played in the remastered version with smooth scrolling and a bigger viewport:

IMG_1326.thumb.jpeg.ecf70b761c98592f85d4c3aae9fb5b24.jpeg

Browser:

Suika Game - 28 minutes

Game Boy Advance:

Goodboy Galaxy - 100 minutes

IMG_1344.thumb.jpeg.9e4977a9599e553381a50d2108801d68.jpeg

Looks cute but a significant challenge!

PlayStation 3:

Gran Turismo 5 - 180 minutes

IMG_1359.jpeg

Installing Gran Turismo 5 - 120 minutes

Updating Gran Turismo 5 - 75 minutes

I exaggerate but only slightly. Anyway, I enjoyed the go karting way too much.

Switch:

Bridge Strike - 40 minutes

An updated version of the Amiga homebrew I played in the Classic tracker.

Faefarm - 10 minutes

I did the Game Trial for the bonus platinum points.

F-Zero 99 - 15 minutes

The new classic mode is a lot more fun to me than the battle royale.

Suika Game - 10 minutes

Tetris 99 - 15 minutes

Yeah! You Want "Those Games", Right? So Here You Go! Now, Let's See You Clear Them! - 20 minutes

By "those games" they mean the fake games you see in mobile app ads. Pretty funny in concept but kind of boring in practice.
