Atari hotels?

Some years ago I remember it made the news that Atari was partnering with some other companies to make atari themed hotels.  I haven't heard much about it since, though there is an odd website that's still up talking about the vision.  Since no addresses or specifics are listed, I take it nothing has been developed in this manner yet, but just wanted to check with the forum here... What the heck happened with this atari hotel initiative?

I would literally plan a vacation around an Atari Hotel... so... bring it on.

Meh.  Don't really care if they build them or not, though I do see them as emblematic of the schizophrenic approach to the marketplace that was a signature of the Chesnais era.

If one were to go up in Vegas, I'd probably visit it for the novelty value.  But then, I'm also in Vegas two to four times a year on average for business, so getting to it wouldn't be much of a stretch.  Setting it as a vacation destination, though?  It'd have to have some significant appeal or USP that can't be found at the other hotels in the area.

Either way, it'd have to be built first, so there is that ;)

Hah, yeah... I mean... if it was built out in the middle of nowhere, I would visit it in passing along a road trip if it was in the area. But so long as it's in a specific location that has other attractions, I'd definitely stay at it. Vegas is a place that I haven't been to in a while, at least since my daughter was born. Not really "kid friendly," but I used to go there all the time when my wife and I didn't have kids. But maybe that could be an additional "draw" to the Atari Hotel. You could make it as much kid-friendly as say various hotels try to do at at Disney World.

My imagination could run wild, but the assumption of course would be that there's a very large arcade in the lobby... and perhaps a multi-cade in every hotel room... and every suite room would need to be themed for a specific game... Berzerk, Asteroids, etc... and not just a picture on the wall about the toilet in the bathroom, haha.

The normal rooms could be more generic... just Atari themed with a smattering of game influence.

From what I've read, it's a simple licensing deal for Atari that the hotel company pay them for. That would mean if it works out, it'll help drive the brand as something cool, and if it fails it really doesn't matter or cost Atari anything. I imagine the decision was simply how much and collaborating on how the brand is used/reflected. I also sounds like the plan was pre-pandemic, where hotel companies suffered for a few years straight and just now recovering, so I'm not surprised it's not gotten too far.

Its been awhile for me too but last time I was there it seemed like they were building a ton of theme park style kids stuff. Someone told me they were trying to change the image, make it more family friendly, etc... Anyone been there recently, is it a "kid zone" now? I can't see how it would be possible but then again, thats a lot of revenue they miss out on 😆

We were there last month for a conference.  The image change is...  Superficial.  I wouldn't exactly call it a 'kid zone' by any stretch of the imagination.

If you're staying on (or near to) the Strip, after you check in at your hotel you will have to walk through part of the casino to get to your room.  I can't think of a single property in that area where this isn't the case.

As part of walking through the casino, you also get to walk past the bars.  This is great for watching some really inexplicably bad behaviour.

If you're really lucky, you'll get to see hotel security dragging someone out who couldn't abide by the rules after getting drunk.

Vegas has a massive homeless population, along with drug problems, aggressive panhandling, and petty crime.  The Strip isn't as sanitised by Vegas Metro (police) as it used to be.  Needles on the sidewalks and in the gutters are not uncommon.

Don't forget the somewhat-clothed strippers and hookers.  They're still out on the strip, drumming up business.

Oh, and the city's running out of water.  Again.

There's parts of Vegas that could be considered Kid Friendly,  but there's also stuff that goes on on the strip that isn't--  people handing out cards advertising 'girls' for strip shows and worse.

Did a tour of the southwest a few years back with a stop in Vegas a few years back and kept having a nagging feeling of "shouldn't have brought the kids here" even though there was lots of cool stuff for them to enjoy, like aquariums, Hershey and M&M areas, and so on.   There's always adult stuff around you can't get away from.

You know given how things are going over at Disney I think I would rather stay at the Atari hotel then go to Disney land, just a thought.

Yeah, that Star Wars hotel turned into a flop (at least partially due to the insane prices to say) and they are already closing it down.  Had so much potential, too, I'm really disappointed in what they ended up doing, and oof course, by the crazy pricing.  Would be a blast staying at an Atari hotel if done right!

It's not just the price, but also the fact that you get stuck spending two days of your vacation there doing sometimes mundane things.

I think it might work better as some kind of dinner theater thing,  you go on a short 1-hour adventure,  "land" at the cantina and eat,  maybe spend no more than 3 hours there

If they had a more compelling Star Wars experience, being "stuck" for two days there would have been fine.  But it looked pretty lackluster to me, and much of the ship really doesn't have a Star Wars feel.  Which is a shame, as we know they CAN do that.  Look at Galaxy's Edge, which is pretty amazing for what it is, and then the interior of this hotel, and you'll be scratching your head, "What about this is Star Wars?".

Yeah I've heard some people complain the Star Cruiser looks more Star Trek than Star Wars.     The limited amount I've seen of it, it did look a little "off".   But from reviews I've heard of people who stayed there, they would have you engage in mediocre card games and what not to fill time.    48-hours is a lot of time, and it can't be all exciting space battles all that time I suppose.

And time spent on "filler" activities is time that could have been spent on Space Mountain or at the Food and Wine festival.

Maybe they could have kept it a hotel, but instead of making you spend two days there,  they would have "shuttles" to take you to Galaxy's Edge, Planet Epcot (Epcottooine?), etc.   These could be "Rise of the Resistance style"-  ordinary buses or trucks, but the inside is designed to look like a space ship with fake viewing screens to make it look like your are travelling in hyperspace to your destination

I just think the way it was-  extremely high price, while keeping you captive while at Disney World + not quite getting the theming right was just a recipe for disaster.

Sounds terrible 😄 🤣 guess the face-lift was a bust...

Well, blowing up the older hotels and replacing them with new ones over a period of a couple of decades did refresh the Strip somewhat.  I'll give it that.

The main thing is that, well, it's Vegas.  Take away the gambling, booze, and hookers and you're left with Salt Lake City only with three times the population.  Nothing against SLC (or even Utah in general), but vice is Vegas' USP.  Without it, it's just a moderately-sized desert city.

I stayed in the Nomad 3 weeks ago- walk right into the hotel lobby, restaurant, elevators to your room.  Nothing trashy about it whatsoever, and you have to walk out the backside to even see the casino.  Perfectly fine for a kid.

There is plenty of great stuff in Vegas- just do your research and have to pay more than the standard fare.

Also highly recommend this sushi house-  https://www.kabutolv.com/

At which point you (and the kid) are basically confined to that hotel, because Vegas doesn't cease being Vegas based on where you stay.
