Understand that a lot of homebrews don't yet run with firmware v1.0

Honestly, I would hold off on any homebrews until the first update arrives.

For the 2600, most homebrew games that don't use the Aria or Melody boards work fine.  For the 7800, virtually all homebrews will work when the first patch is released.

Some disclaimers:

a) I don't own all of these games so I don't know if they're compatible with the 2600+.

b) I am only going to list games that are still sold on AtariAge.

As for the recommendations:

Something by SpiceWare

Medieval Mayhem if you like Warlords and/or want a paddle game.  Space Rocks if you like Asteroids.  There's also Stay Frosty 2 if you like platformers.

Something by Champ Games.

I think Conquest of Mars is the only game still sold here, but it's an excellent game and a fantastic port of Caverns of Mars.  Also, you can buy cartridges of their other games on their website, but you'll need an actual 2600 to play them.

Something by VHZC Games.

VHZC Games has put out a lot of great platformers for both the 2600 and the 7800.  I would recommend you start with Game of the Bear for the 2600.

Something by PacManPlus.

PacManPlus is best known for his various Pac-Man ports, but he also did an excellent port of Frenzy, the sequel to Berzerk.  It's a 7800 game, and it includes Berzerk as well.  He also made an original platformer starring Bentley Bear and a 7800 port of Circus Atari.

One or more of the most popular games for the 2600 and the 7800.

I really like Aardvark and Assembloids as far as 2600 games go.  Aardvark's not compatible yet, though.

Synthcart won't work on the 2600+ unless keypad support is added.  (You'll also need two keypad controllers.)

I'd recommend T:ME Salvo for the 7800 but it's not compatible yet, either.

And I'm sure you'll find more games you're interested in if you browse the forums.  Many homebrew authors make their game ROM's freely availableSome also sell theirs which could save you money provided you have the hardware.  I wouldn't invest in a flash cart at the moment, though.  2600+ support is limited.
