I might debate that "Boulder Dash 2" or whatever it ends up being named is a "port" - as it is/would/will/does contain totally new caves never seen elsewhere. It's more of a (to be) licensed IP using the same game mechanics but new games.  Cue the great "what is a port?" debate of 2023.

Trying to nail down the exact definitions of Port/Conversion/Sequel/Hack/Adaption/Demo/Game Demo/Transcompilation/Re-Release/Update/etc has been an ongoing project throughout my time doing this. Each of these terms means different things to different people and it can also change based on if the developer is the original coder of the game it's based on or if it's officially licensed or not, etc etc etc... I also have to use phrases like "substantive update" because everything is very subjective and each game must be inspected individually.

You can read my current definitions in this year's Voting Guide but for these yearly lists it boils down to games being placed into two categories, Original and Port, with the word Port to mean everything that doesn't fall into the Original category. Since Boulder Dash is based on an existing game, it doesn't fall into the Original category, so don't take the word Port too literally as it's more of an umbrella term.

Thank you for bringing this up and I will work on adapting my definitions list to the top post to help clarify things.
