Gazoo
You want my scuzzy hard drive image? Has a couple hundred ea3 & 5 games including the ones you were looking for? Absolutely. Not being a gamer, I had trouble tracking down enough games to fill this cart. Having an ample supply would help me to construct another one. Gazoo
Yeah, it really needs a reset button (maybe a DPST that remove power from the 378 as well as reset the console). But with this cart, you don't need the 32K expansion; it'll work on a stock console. Thus, it worked for someone like my father, who still has a stock console which he and his other grandkids play with. A couple cool things about the program; just as trivia; Tursi did a really cool job with the 256 bytes in VDP making this work, and Sometimes99er did an outstanding job on the font and the graphics! (I really do like the font and graphics....) Well if you're interested in trivia... The code that I've constructed to make this work is 'Code that moves code that moves code that moves code' and finally executes. Sort of like the 'Star Trek The Next Generation' that had a 'Holodeck in a Holodeck in a Holodeck'. I still have trouble watching that one and figuring out what Holodeck we're watching. So just imagine keeping track of what code you're working on. And then you threw me for a loop when you said that the >6000 bank doesn't reset to the first one on a quit. That required putting Rom headers where they didn't belong, and using all of the available Scratchpad Ram except 6 bytes. Actually I'm using more Scratchpad Ram than is allowed, but it doesn't seem to be hurting anything. Anyway... it works. Gazoo
+acadiel
Some thoughts now that I had a couple hours (on and off, mostly off) to mess with the UberGROM cart (PLCC). It's getting really hard to find hobby time lately. 1) The 49F040's are rock solid. They program and verify A-OK. The sockets on the boards are what's causing my grief with them. The sure fire way to fix it (and I've been having to do it frequently) are to take a little needle (one of those like that comes with a collared shirt, really tiny), and stick it in the hole behind the metal contact on the socket; each one of them; do it STRAIGHT DOWN, don't bend it at an angle. That bends them out enough to where they work again. If we go to prod with these boards, we might want to find a different manufacturer of the sockets. 2) I've successfully gotten Gazoo's util cart, Gazoo's games cart, Tursi's Bank Test, and Tursi's Multicart working with the 49F040 boards. 3) Some of my 74LS378's power up in the first bank, some in the last. Don't ask me why. They're all TI brand. They don't have a defined power up state, but now with 512K, we can probably afford putting a safety feature in the last bank just in case as well as the normal first bank. (In fact, let's just make that a standard.) 4) Gazoo's games cart, the latest version, (I haven't reviewed the utility one yet for functionality) only has a few things I noticed offhand on a real console with a Corcomp Mini PEB attached: Blasto just resets my system Blackjack and Poker does the same Hopper has something strange (not sure if it's the cart or the F18A) where I can move the kangaroo throughout the WHOLE screen; that's right, she goes through just about anything. Everything else appears to work (selecting game and trying to start it). I need to buy some more materials to finish making four that Ksarul sent me (mostly sockets and caps). I the meantime, I tried to make 2048 into a cart (thinking it was a 16K ROM image), and couldn't do so, but I'll look at it a little closer and make sure it's meant to be a 16K banked ROM. +Ksarul
The last week or two has given me a lot of data that needs to be added to the manual. The more people there are using the boards, the more questions there are as people try to push the envelope with it. That is a very good thing. . .although, from the comments from Acadiel and Gazoo on the foibles of PLCC sockets, it looks like we'll need to devote an entire section to the care and feeding of the PLCC sockets. I'm not sure that it will change with any other socket manufacturer (other than for burn-in sockets, which were designed to take extreme punishment), as most of the ones I've seen for sale seem to be of a similar degree of stability. Gazoo may be able to tell us more there, as he noted that he's worked with them for quite a few years in arcade machine settings.

When I used my console with the SOB that contained TKGROM0, I got strange results, switching to a standard console made everything work normally. Are you using a non-standard Grom0? Gazoo
Gazoo, stock 99/4A system except for F18A, and Corcomp Mini Peripheral Expansion system. That is it :-) It's probably the Corcomp MES funky disk controller powerup causing the trouble. I assume you don't have the Millers Graphics eproms in it? If you feel up to doing an experiment, you could try removing the disk controller eproms from it and see if everything works ok then. +remowilliams
Thanks to Ksarul I've now got a couple 512K carts an an UberGROM cart. Programmed the gamecart binary from Gazoo into one of the 512K carts and the UberGROM and so far so good. Except for my burner choking on the AT49F040 for some bizarre reason, going with the AM29F040 worked like a charm there. Burned a TC574000AD for the 512K cart. This is sooooo awesome, huge thanks to everyone involved! Now if we could get every TI game cart on to a few of these bad boys...

+acadiel
I'm using an old 844USB from BK Electronics. It's a rebadged Elnec programmer, and they seem to update the software for it quite frequently for new devices :-) Definitely not a budget programmer, but after some of the cheap ones I bought on eBay, it definitely works well out of the box, which is what I wanted. I find my patience level for inexpensive stuff which you have to fiddle with has gone down as I approach 40.

Gazoo
Same here. There's lot's of cheapo ways I could have gone but spending the money for a higher end device that without endless screwing around is going to work first time, every time, was the way to go. To each his own. I just got the cheapest one I could find to do the job, the Genius 540. It works. I'll figure out the problem and make it work if it doesn't on the first try. Why spend money needlessly on unnecessary expensive shit? I've done that in the past and the investment just wasn't worth it. But that's just me, I don't have money to flush down the toilet. Oh, and I'm 55 and already been dead twice. Gazoo Edited May 15, 2014 by Gazoo
+Ksarul
I'm on the 55 bandwagon too, Gazoo--but I haven't had the been dead experience yet. . .I buy the tools that do what I want them to do, so if they happen to be inexpensive, excellent. If they end up costing more--and I know I'll use them a lot, I buy the expensive stuff (like my Pace kits for soldering). I got the chips this morning too--now I just have to build a pair of boards to put them into (I sold all of the batch I had built already). Gazoo
Any chance of a 'roll your own' sort of kit for bundling carts into an image? I only ask because apparently there are many crap games on cart Anyone is welcome to put whatever games they want into a cart. Gather together the games you want, join the images together with a hex editor, and write a simple assembly program with a menu, read a keypress, move the game out into the appropriate area from rom, and branch to the start of the game. The process is MUCH simpler than actually writing a game. I recommend making up a chart like this so you know where everything is when you start to write the code.
