Tricky Tutorial #11 The Memory Map Tutorial (1983)(Santa Cruz Educational Software)(US)[cassette]

After several attempts, lesson 4 always turns out bad on the 39th block of the data.  There is no visual defect on the tape.

I can't understand how all of these are full of glitches, I don't remember so much BITD, a rarity. I'd suppose the only way to fix is to correct what's wrong and remaster them. So odd.

edit ** oh I see some of them had extensive cleaning needed and other issues. I sure hope your endeavor succeeds.

When the source of a cassette or disk is eBay and since these are 40 years old +-, here is the kind of damage you run into:

Sun warped or stretched.
Dust has collected.
Something spilled on it.
A magnet erased it.
Starts to disintegrate.
Actual physical damage applied.

I try to save every single one. Sometimes it does not work and sometimes I get a partial that could help verify another recording.

Analog #58

  1. CASTAWY1.BAS is the game of Castaway.  CASTAWY2.BAS is the program to setup the different rooms.  An ATR has been setup with the game and is included.
  2. The Wizard is an adventure creator program.  It is split between issue #58 and #59. I made an attempt to set it up, but when I was typing in the commands it stated that the command was in use.  For now, I am including the files as they are shown in the magazine.  At a later date I will try to get it all setup and provide an ATR.
  3. All the files for Troll War are on the disk for issue #57, including the compiled game.  I left TROLL16.M65 on this disk as it was that way when issued, even though this is a non-original disk.

BackTalk 1.2 (1986)(Antic Software)(US)[disk]

I recorded it 3 times.  Each time the bad sectors are the same. The -p option does nothing.

Did Antic use copy protection?

Yes, they did in some cases but not here.

(Actually the disk contains only one bad sector.)

Data of your dump is identical to Atarimania's dump which I used to fix your ATX:

Backtalk v1.0 (1985)(Antic Software)(US)(Side A)[f].atx

Backtalk v1.0 (1985)(Antic Software)(US)(Side A)[f].atr

But having said that:
Track 30 misses sector 18 (=578) but contains two identical instances of sector 16 (=576). The second instance of 16 is in the exact position where sector 18 should be (and also where I would expect a second instance for copy protection).

But the missing sector 578 is part of AUTORUN.SYS and therefore may not be bad!

Your disk might be a mastering error.

Accidentally overwriting a sector is easy and common place but changing a sector's header definitely is not, much less doing it in a way which leads to a good sector.

Perhaps @ijor can have a look at the SCP file contained in your inital posting.

Analog #59

  1. STRPATCH.BAS from Reader's Comments is a patch for Streamliner from issue #56.
  2. CWLIST7.LST is a fix for listing #7 of Checkwriter from Issues 27 and 28 and other fixes from issue #53.
  3. WIZFRAME.BAS and WIZCOMP.BAS are part of The Wizard adventure creator. These files are as typed, but it has problems.  Leaving for now as they match the listing in the Magazine.  I will set up a proper ATR at a later date when I have time to figure the system out.
  4. PRESENT1.BAS does not include the lines that are created PRESLINE.BAS. PRESENT2.BAS includes the lines of code generated by PRESLINE.BAS.

Analog #60

  1. NFL.LST from Reader's Comments is a correction to NFL Game Analyzer from issue #57
  2. QSMENU.BAS creates the file QSMENU.PGE. QSSTRING.BAS creates SQUEEZE.DAT. SQUEEZE.DAT is entered into QUICK.BAS to add the ML lines. QUICK.BAS matches the magazine listing and QUICKSCR.BAS is the completed program.
