New Atari Console that Ataribox?

(How lazy is it for "Atari" to poach someone else's screenshot of a game they supposedly own? They already visited the ROM site to get the screenshot, so how much harder would it have been to download the ROM and take their own damn screenshot?!)

I doubt there's anyone at AtariSA (especially Fred) who has actually played all of their IPs. I would doubt Fred has even played a fraction of them.

Are there any pictures or videos showing Fred actually playing a video game?

Oh wait... here's one, of sorts:

I searched for one of him playing the Ataribox, but couldn't find any. For some reason.

I would've thought that would've been the first result on Google. Go figure.

Fortunately for Atari, they're "so much more than just video games".

They're uh...

What are they again?

Oh right. "Drafting".

I've said it before.. If atari was really serious in getting back into gaming, focus on arcade gaming. That's a growing market with plenty of room for competition, and potential for big bucks. Hell, Eugene Jarvis started his own company, Raw Thrills, and is doing pretty well.

This is what I've been thinking the whole time. Hell, SEGA aught to consider doubling-down on arcades globally as well, I've been impressed w/ Scarlet Dawn and World Driver's Championship stuff so far. Raw Thrill's been consistent and getting IP like Halo in FECs is a big deal. And osme big potential big markets for it too.

Exa-Arcadia is looking pretty good right now, too. Now if someone could just make a complete package and put some real muscle behind it, it's not out of range of expectations arcades could blossom again globally even if not at the levels of the '80s.

Are you sure about that?

I know there was a split from the home console/computer division and the arcade division in 1984, but does that necessarily mean Atari SA isn't ALLOWED to release an arcade game?

All those mini arcades from 1UP including Asteroids, Missile Command, Centipede etc are in a weird neutral zone, being "arcade" machines to play at home.

Yeah, the 1UP stuff seems pretty neat but while it'd be really cool to see that w/ modern (not sure exactly what's powering those but I'm guessing it's Pi-level hardware; not like any of those games need even a modern i3 to run well) I worry the pricing for that would shoot well north of $300 unless they cheapened out on build quality significantly.

...That's if we're talking about new releases in the format, not anthologies of classic games.

I played that physical Pong game at the Midwest Gaming Classic a couple months of go. Not only was it cool, it was also actually there. Not a mock up on a computer. And is vey much original, not a PC off the shelf. So I rate it up there with tacos.

Looks like Fred is also part of some psycho-therapy board but what the hell does that do with video games? Maybe he watches that SNL spoof of Alan: A Video Junkie just for shits and giggles.

Fred: "You play too much Nintendo! I'm gonna get you into a padded cell until you play some Atari!"

I did too! It was pretty impressive. However, very spendy, and what if something in there breaks?

Nothing, but there's a lot of finance and law in health care. Frankly (frankodragonly) I think many would be happiest if he left the AtariLife behind to make more time for his other interests. Speaker. Hat.

How's that? They're too small, weak, and understaffed to be worth acquiring now, but too expensive to grab as a bargain buy. Big dogs like Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo are too busy making hardware and games to bother with a t-shirt logo company.

Seems to me there's plenty of time left to wait for them to bottom out and get acquired by Hot Topic or something.

They're a "t-shirt company" that is currently obligated to deliver almost 3 million worth of consoles... that they don't know how to make themselves. Oh, and I'm sure at least half of the cash raised has already gone to pay previous creditors or slipped into the panties of French strippers.

Tell me that doesn't sweeten the pot.

This isn't about Atari but with the lack of news or anything, I just want to say, with all the Sega fans gushing for a new Sega console, you'd know what i'd rather see? They're sitting on a whole lot of IP's that they do absolutely nothing with.

-Deep Fear on the Sega Saturn released only in Europe and Japan very late in the Saturn's life span. Shame it never became a franchise because it could be just as iconic and popular as Resident Evil and Silent Hill. I imported it from Japan and have played a little bit of it and have enjoyed it immensely.

-Skies of Arcadia could be a cool niche franchise similar to the Tales games, instead we only got 1 game then a re-release on the GameCube which obviously sold horrible as well (The PS2 port got cancelled for some reason which was a huge blow and blew any chance at getting any kind of success) No surprise that a niche & relatively unheard of Dreamcast game that got a GameCube port released in limited quantities and non-existant advertising sold horrible, but alas Sega deemed it a failure, and never to speak of it ever again.

Just 2 examples, but i'd rather much see some of these original & unique games be fleshed out into franchises. People keep complaining that they're tired of HD remakes and remasters and the like. These companies (Not just Sega, but numerous other companies like Nintendo, Capcom and Konami as well as numerous others) are sitting on a goldmine of incredible IP's that they do nothing with or single games like Deep Fear that have massive franchise potential.

Capcom has Power Stone, an insanely good Sega Dreamcast game. With the ridiculous popularity of Super Smash Bros and the exploding popularity of E-Sports, Capcom could have something massive & incredible with Power Stone, instead we get 5 billion re-releases of Mega Man games that people have bought 5-10 times already throughout their life (Not that I blame Capcom, they are a business after all and re-releasing compilations of Mega Man games are extremely easy, cheap and simple and if people continue to open their wallets up to buy them in droves to buy them, why focus time, money and energy on new IP's or old, essentially abandoned IP's?)

Screw making a new Sega system, they have an incredible portfolio of IP's that have all been essentially abandoned, i'd much rather they do something with those rather then make a new console which would be an obscenely expensive and a colossal commercial failure anyways, just like the Saturn, Dreamcast, 32X, and the Sega CD.

However, while Sega isn't themselves doing things with them, Sega has been notoriously even handed with their IP's,in as much as if fans want to do unauthorized sequels, remakes or whatever, as long as the efforts arent pornographic or distasteful, Sega has adopted a "go for it!" attitude.

nintendo and nutacotari could learn a lot from Sega.

Sega's adoption of Christian Whitehead was pure genius, and I hope the relationship is making everyone lots of money. I like how they've ported those games to just about every current platform. Sonic Mania is what was needed all along, and I think Sega's leadership understands that.

"Sega Forever" had a rough start, but seems like an effort to deliver what we want. I think they said they'd be working on some bigger games soon, so this is where Skies of Arcadia would first appear if it comes back. I think it would work great on mobile. It's much harder to rework a Gamecube or Xbox game than it is to convert a Genesis ROM.

At least in the case of AM2R, Nintendo was already working on Samus Returns, which is cool.

There's so much product out there I can't get too bummed about companies holding things back, especially if they're working to make better versions of the oldies on many different platforms.

Agreed that we have enough console (and mobile) platforms. A "new Sega console" would just be a resource drain, a money pit for the company.
