My Top 10 Favorite 2600 Games - 9/06

I submitted a list to the Top 100 Atari Games of All Time thread, but then, I started getting in new games, and I want to add a couple of them to this list. So then, I thought, why not just change my Top 10 list every month? So here's this one, the first month: #1 - Grand Prix #2 - Freeway #3 - Frogger (Yes, imitation beats original!) #4 - Asteroids #5 - Video Pinball #6 - Street Racer #7 - RealSports Football #8 - Ms. Pac-Man #9 - Defender #10 - Super Breakout   So there you have i

Dreams Kinda Come True

Went to Value Village earlier today, and there in the back next to some phones and crap, was a CIB Xevious for NES. This is the closest I've ever come to finding anything in stupid thrift stores. The box was kinda ripped in the bottom (which tends to happen to those small pieces of cardboard), and it came with an instruction booklet, so I decided, hey, I'll buy it. When I get to the checkout counter, it turns out everything is half price day, so instead of buying it for $5, it's only $2.50. Swee

Bringing home the bacon?

For those who don't read the Atari 2600 BASIC forums, I've made a little game called "Space Bacon: When Pigs Fly." The question is, do you like it, and if you do, would you want it in stock at the Atari Age store? Take your time answering, because Albert's gone until the 15th. This is 4k, so it would only be $20, IIRC. Just wondering. Of course, please answer if you're one of those who buys every homebrew game. I'd like as much feedback as possible. And please remember that I've only been progra

Labor Day is stupid.

The first Monday in September is Labor Day here in the U.S. That means everything's closed: Government offices, schools, post office, garbage pickup. But the malls are still open. And that's one thing I'm sick of: Not getting mail on Labor Day. I mean, really. The letter carriers get Columbus Day off, but the rest of the government doesn't. And Labor Day is a stupid idea to begin with. Let's celebrate work by staying home from it! There's an old Garfield comic strip with the poem "Labor Day, Shm

Happy September!

I can't believe it's September already. August sure did go fast, didn't it? Well, anyway, went out shopping earlier and got a Queens of the Stone Age 33 RPM picture disc. It was weird, because it's the same size as a 45 rpm and so I started playing it at that speed and it sounded like girls were singing it. Since I've never heard of the band before, I thought girls *were* singing it (being as how the band is named Queens of the Stone Age) so I kept listening to it. Then, I tried lowering it to 3

Information on 'The Information'

In case you're a Beck fan (and no, not Jeff Beck), he has a new album coming out on October 3. It's called "The Information." It has 15 tracks, and one of them is called "Cell Phone's Dead," which will be a single. This is Beck's 7th album on a major record label and 9th album on CD overall. Beck is a two-hit wonder (so far). You may remember "Loser" from 1994 and "Where It's At" from 1996. And he's still making music for his fans, one of which is me. I have all 8 Beck CD albums and he is such a

Will someone please do something interesting?

I really think yesterday's "Non Sequitur" comic strip really states about the state of my life right now. Nothing really all that much to talk about, except from the fact that some new (read: old, common for all you avid collectors) Atari 2600 games are coming my way thanks to a couple of nice people. I have no choice but to get them through the internet, because no used video game store stocks them anymore. Taped Jay Leno's headlines last night. He's finally back from reruns, and the funniest o

I am a Dragonstomper.

I go around stomping on dragons. I reached this with post 500 a few minutes ago, and I have absolutely no idea what game the term is from, if any. At the rate I'm going, I'll probably reach around 1,000 posts by Christmas. And my home baseball team, the minor-league Salem-Keizer Volcanoes, have just clinched the NWL West division, and with 10 games left in the season, it looks very possible that they will end up with the best record in all of the 8-team NWL and win the playoffs! It's so good hav

Must-Have DS Games

There are some must-have DS games for my collection coming out in the coming months. I hope to get Yoshi's Island 2 for my birthday, but there's a couple more that I'd like to get to round out my collection a bit more once my b-day rolls around. BTW, this isn't a Wanted post because these games aren't even out yet. Star Fox Command, Mario Hoops 3 on 3, and of course the new Zelda: Phantom Hourglass. I have some DS games I don't even play, like Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time, Castlevania: Da

I got bored again...

...so I updated the program I made last night. It now pauses and makes a noise if you hit a wall (in addition to losing a life). And still no screen problems that I know of. Why would it be in Ants and not this? To play it again once the game is over, just press fire. That's right, we don't need no stinkin' reset switch. In other news, I'm going garage sale-ing tomorrow, and will visit a few right near each other near my grandpa's house (wouldn't have an excuse to if I wasn't visiting him). That

I was bored, so I made this.

I didn't spend very long on it, so it's not that complex, but it's a nibbles-type game where nibbles doesn't grow. I used the same code for a & b being random as I did in Ants, and what's weird is there doesn't seem to be any screen problems that I know of. But since I got unbored, I probably won't finish it unless people want me to.

bBASIC explosion

With the surprise announcement of two have-been-in-development-for-apparently-a-long-time games - MausBoy's Project Eden and super_dos_man's ET (which he wants to sell on a cart LOL) - I too have an announcement about a Batari BASIC project. And unlike all the other ones I've worked on, this one will be poked, prodded, primped and tweaked until the very finish. If there is still a 4K category in next year's MiniGame Compo, I'll put it on there the second I know that the 2007 one is under way. I'

Wario Land 2

Hey, I went to Game Crazy and I bought Wario Land 2. It wasn't exactly what I had in mind buying before I was going, but since it was the original and not the GBC version, I couldn't pass it up. I owned the Game Boy Color version once, and I got tired of it, so I traded it in. And now, since I'm collecting DMG games, I don't plan on trading them anytime soon like I am with the NES games I have. I'm getting so desperate for any new Atari 2600 game that I've turned to the Marketplace, where I've g

Wanted: Alive

If anyone has some spare duplicates of Night Driver, Frogger or Football that they want to get rid of, I'll be happy to take them off your hands for you. I'd ask for more rarer things, but these are the only rarity 1s I don't have yet. Was DXing last night and got a radio station from Vancouver BC, CKWX 1130 AM. I had to look up the call letters because they didn't say them on the air. They just kept saying News1130. Canada's weird. I've been to Victoria once, but I don't remember that much beca

DXing

Did you know that if you have the right radio in Salem, Oregon; you could listen to a radio station in San Francisco, California? There may be a little more in static than you might think. DXing is the act of listening to radio stations really far away from where you are. I've done it a couple times before, but tonight I got two stations: one from San Francisco (KNBR 680 AM) and Reno NV (KKOH 780 "KOH"). If anyone listens to one of these 2 stations regularly, PM me because I'd like to hear from

Weird Games

I know two of the Sega games I'm going to get next time I go to the used video game store. I saw Aaah! Real Monsters (which has to be the very first video game ever made if you put them in alphabetical order, unless you count 'Nickelodeon's' before it.) and an interesting cart of Midway's Greatest Arcade Hits. Interesting because I looked it up on Digital Press and it said the game was only released in Europe and a rarity 5. Does this game have a different name in the States or what? And can an

Almost at 1,000

I've almost got 1,000 hits on my blog. BTW, if you're #1,000, please PM me. Anyway, went to the Salvation Army and they had zero Atari games, which I thought was weird since they had Dreamcast, PS1, and other 90's controllers. So, I went down the street to the used video game store I always talk about in these blogs and got 4 Sega Genesis games: Spot Goes To Hollywood, Taz-Mania, Taz In Escape From Mars, and X-Perts. Yeah, they don't have very many. They had Sonic 3 for $9.95. I'm not gonna pay

Sega!

I got four Sega Genesis games at the used video game store today: Bugs Bunny Double Trouble (rarity 4!), Cool Spot, Earthworm Jim and Pac-Man 2. I used to be a Nintendo fanboy, but when I stuck these games in, I realized along with the other Genesis games I have, that the Genesis had better graphics! And they're very colorful games, too. But the three button deal is weird. I now have 20 Genesis games. If you have a Sega Genesis, put an Atari 2600 controller into the Genesis controller plug-in an

SMB1 Game Genie Codes I Discovered

You can't really 'create' a Game Genie code. You actually discover it, because all the codes are already created. You just have to find out which codes do crazy things and which ones don't. So here we go (SMB1 for NES):   ATPAUY - Mario doesn't earn any points! LLPOKG - start on world 4-2, warp to impossible to beat world YYPOKG - start on underwater 1-2 KTIPEK - Black and white world except for pipes and trees are orange. Mario walks until he reaches a pipe and is stuck. IIPOPK - Brick f

Big differences in NES rarity guides

For instance, Mike Etler's says Stinger is a B+, where as Digit Press's says it's a 3 (or D). Who is right here? Most of them in my collection are pretty close, like Wacky Races, Loopz, etc. The rarest games I have in my collection are Donkey Kong Jr. Math and Pac-Man (Namco). Why is a licensed version of Pac-Man made by the people who made Pac-Man be so rare? You'd think the Tengen versions would be rarer, right? I mean Klax is rare, isn't it? I've only seen it once and snapped it up. I've seen

Game Boy Game Genie

I went to the used video game store earlier and got 3 NES games and a Game Genie for Game Boy. I have been looking for one of these for a very long time and I finally found one. Take Kirby's Dream Land 2, for instance. I couldn't get past level 2. Now with this thing, I just got to level 6. It came with a little instruction book, but it's falling apart (it had T-Z missing when I bought it, but I don't care because anyone can get Game Genie codes off the internet, plus it's the first edition so i

8K Super Maria Sisters a reality

...well almost, but it's certainly going to be. But what I need in order to actually sell this is 9 people to buy it. That's it. Just 9. I already have one confirmed, so it's actually 8. So the big question is, if Super Maria Sisters were on sale for $13, would you buy it? (The person who bought it for the $20 price will get an automatic $7 rebate, in case he's reading this.) If not, what would you change? E-mail me or give me a PM if interested. I've only got about 1k left to neaten up some thi

R.I.P. Bob Thaves

Not really anyone in the Atari community, Bob Thaves, creator and drawer of the comic strip "Frank and Ernest" passed away yesterday at 81. One of the few comic strips I ever read, Bob will be surely missed by me and thousands of his comic's readers. His son will continue the strip, but it will never be the same without Bob's funny take on the world today. BTW, the other comic strips I read are Garfield (and Jim Davis is hanging in at age 61 or so), Mother Goose and Grimm (around the same age fo

VCS on VCR

I finally figured out hooking my 2600 up to my VCR. Now I can record myself playing the Atari 2600. One problem, though, the colors are different. They're darker. The only concern I've run in so far is I can't see the ants in level 4 of my homebrew Ants game. Why would it be different? Is it the VCR? Probably, because the color is different if the VCR is not turned on. I hooked it up to the TV, which is hooked up to the VCR. I can now record a little low-power station in my area, KWVT channel 52

Blue suede records

Well, blue records anyway. I thought I could keep collecting picture 45s, but after seeing the prices on some of them, like a couple of Queens of the Stone Age ones asking for about $8 or 9, I decided screw this, and so I started collecting blue vinyl. Why blue? Because blue is my second-favorite color (after black, but all records are black.) Which is how I found this neat little band called The Outside Inside, which did classic-sounding surf rock-n-roll Beach-Boys type rock in the 90s. Both so
