eBay auctions are stupid

So I was bidding on Frankenstein's Monster for the 2600. Every bid was outbidded. I pushed the cost up to $8 until I thought "to hell with this" and bought it for a little bit more money on another auction with a "buy it now" option. The thing is, I won't never know the guy's maximum bid. They should show you this so you know what people would be willing to pay so you can go higher if you wanted to. Anyway, still no package from this guy I bought a game from on eBay. The eCheck cleared on the 7t

Our "new" cat

Well, yesterday our sister came over and brought the cat to come live with us. I think she (the cat) is happy not being terrorized by my niece. Her favorite places to lay are on top of the recliner and on top of the couch. She hasn't eaten or slept much (I don't know, she might have slept sometime when I was asleep.) She likes to meow a lot, for apparently no good reason. And she also likes to claw the carpet. When mom gets home, we're going to get her a scratching post, and I want another jigsa

Holly 4

Between the time when Grandma died and his own death, Grandpa got a cat. My grandparents were odd at naming pets, they just kept using the same name over and over again. So now when Holly 3 died, Grandpa got and named Holly 4 (the full name for these four cats are Holly-Go-Lightly Cat). When Grandpa died, my sister got the cat, which made my sister have two cats. The other cat, Lilly, ate the way cats do, not very often, but Holly apparently just gobbles food down, so Holly usually eats Lilly's

The Orb and the Nice

Went to the record store. Found a copy of a Nice album in apparently terrific shape. I also found an Orb CD hoping for a long song. I got one. I have never heard of the Orb, and the "music" is very weird. I'm also back working on 2600Tris, and revived the thread in the homebrew forum, so take a look at it. My niece spent the night last night. I stayed up until at least 10:30, something I don't normally do, and watched the Blazers beat the Lakers even with the long list of injuries the Blazers ha

Life without my dog

Well, it's day one without Zeke, In case you haven't heard, there was a cancellation and mom got in at 5pm yesterday. Things are kind of lonely without the dog being here. I really don't have anyone except you wonderful people on the internet until Mom comes home from work. I've been busy, making some more crossword puzzles, I really like #6, it's my favorite one I've made so far, and #7 is kinda cool, too. I've also updated my YouTube page with commercials from KOIN 6 and a new Headlines segmen

My dog is going to die

Well, he's been with us for almost 12 years, but in recent years his health has been declining, most recently rapidly, and so mom decided to make an appointment to put him to sleep. Don't get me wrong, I love the dog and will miss him, but will finally be happy he's not suffering anymore. Unfortunately, the vet's office is so busy, she can't get in until Saturday at 1pm! The vet's office will call her if they can get her in earlier, but it's the beginning of the end of the dog's life. Right now,

X Dictionary

I am going to make a comprehensive list of every single word beginning with the letter X in the English language. I believe this will take a while. The Salem Public Library has an edition of the OED (Oxford English Dictionary). I checked online (Amazon.com) for the price: $995.00! Being 20 volumes, I still think it's too much. Anyway, I got started with my dictionaries as well as pop culture references (movie and TV show titles). The current list is here. They say they're working on an OED3 (thi

Octopus update

Well, as it turns out, they're letting the octopus stay up until they find out who the winning bid is. So all that waiting for nothing. Anyway, I just went on eBay and bought my 300th Atari 2600 game. The game that got me to 300 is (drum roll please...) Skeet Shoot. Apparently it doesn't seem to be a very good game. That's OK, I also have Firefly from Mythicon.

Giant octopus coming down?

The Portland, Oregon restaurant called "Greek Cuisina" has closed, and the giant octopus that sits atop the restaurant will be coming down. FOX 12 said they'd bring live coverage of the giant octopus statue coming down. They said it would come down at 8am. At 8:30 am, the octopus was still up there, and now it's a quarter after 10 and FOX hasn't interrupted regular programming to give us the live coverage they promised. I had to watch "The 700 Club" and right now I'm watching an infomercial abou

Sonic R

I just placed an order with the Goat Store for Sonic R for the Sega Saturn. It's been a while since I got anything for my Saturn, and seeing as how the game store has no Saturn items (save Bust-A-Move with no long case or no instructions for $30!) I went with the ol' trusty Goat Store. I figured that since I like Mario Kart 64 that I would like a similar racing game for the same generation. As you can tell, I'm in a Saturn kind of mood today. I'm going to play my Saturn. Problem is, I don't real

Infomercials!

I don't know if this is true with every Comcast channel line-up, but on channel 99, there is a channel that shows nothing but infomercials. I got the idea to tape some of these infomercials for no good reason. I'm taping one right now as I'm typing this. When I am done with recording 6 hours' worth, (stopping and starting recording to get a new title), I am going to sit down and watch every single one back to back whenever I'm bored. that will give me something to do and I will quit whining abou

Game Gear Reviews

A new decade, a new e-zine. I've decided since the Game Gear isn't very popular, that I've decided to start writing a monthly e-zine dedicated to the Game Gear. Since there appears to be no homebrew scene, all I can really write about then is reviews, so I made issue 1 of Game Gear Reviews, a monthly 6-page e-zine in .pdf format. Please download it and tell me what you think. I'm in the midst of writing a second issue, but should there be more after that? Also, I'm back working on "Kirby 2600" a

Call Me Zyzzy

So, I look in the phone book to see what the last name is. For a few years, it was Efim and Janice Zyryanoff, but this phone book marks in a new era in phone books. Some guy put in his phony last name of P. Zyz. I want to beat him by putting my name as Zyzzy Zyzzyva in there. I just need to know how. My name is not in the phone book (My mom is in there as J Read), so I'm wondering how to add a name in there. Do I need a cell phone? I may just get a cell phone if I have to with the most limited p

Snow and bugs

I woke up from a nap to find snow on the ground. Not very much, but I called my mom and asked her why she didn't call me to say it was snowing. She said it wasn't doing it enough to warrant a call. It had started up again so at least I got to see it. It had changed over to rain while I was writing this. I've been working on Insect Combat some more. In case you haven't heard, I'm making a new VB game. Right now you can choose from four fighters, but I hope to make it 8 before I start on the actua

Joust

I never did like Joust. The controls are lousy on each and every version, and the Lynx version is no different. I like the game concept, but the controls ruin it for me. I haven't played it for a long time and it took me a while to find out what to do (pounce on top of the other birds) and get the eggs that pop out of them. And then there's the fact that starting on wave 3, there's two pits of lava that the stupid bird can die in. Man I wish there were "teddy bear" versions of each game on the L

Comics

I don't know whether I should just stop with my webcomics altogether. Nobody except my mom seems to be reading them. I think Sunday's (today's) is a little "Garfield"-esque when Garfield sits down and watches TV. And then there's the M-Sat "47 Meatballs", which is kinda hard thinking up new panels for, especially 6 in a week. Nevertheless, since I make them a month in advance, I have daily and Sunday comics queued until January 30. If you want to take a look, here. And I got a popcorn tin for Chr

"Fun" with cryptic crosswords

The mind works in mysterious ways. While I was asleep I was apparently trying to think of ideas for my Far-Side-type comic strip. I woke up with two puns in my head, and, armed with a throat ache whenever I tried to lay down, I went to my bathroom where my crossword puzzle magazines were. Each issue has about 5 cryptic crosswords in them (I can't find the latest issue anywhere, though.) I wanted to see if maybe I can work my puns into a cryptic crossword. In each issue, there's also an article a

Long Songs again

I got interested in my long songs collection again, buying a CD version of "Don Juan's Reckless Daughter" by Joni Mitchell from eBay for the 16-minute song "Paprika Plains." I have this album on vinyl, but I want to get all the songs I have on vinyl and not CD on CD. I have succeeded for the most part, but there are a few "most wanted" I have. "Salisbury" by Uriah Heep (the title track of the album), and "Foreigner Suite" by Cat Stevens from his album "Foreigner". Long songs have been made in al

more comix

Well, I just added another episode 17 to A Bird and a Sign. And I have a title for episode 18: "The Amnesia Episode." For those of you who never read my comics, you should really read this one because I type in the words instead of write them (starting with #15). These are a bit different: They read like a comic book. A really short comic book. Each episode is only 6 pages long. The series is about a bird who sits on a sign in the middle of the desert while weird things happen to them. It's kind

Comics Redux

For those of you that don't know, I have a daily webcomic (which you can view here.) Well, it's been such a long time since I've updated the look of the page. I've deleted the "'Jessica' will be daily starting March 30!" message (which isn't true anymore), and added a schedule, which I will update every other month. Right now it's Sundays - "Jessica" (about a 13-year-old girl who lives with her mom), M-Sat - "47 Meatballs", my Far-Side-type comic. I don't know if I'll keep up 47 Meatballs daily,

DS Game of the Year 2009

Well, another year of DS games have come and gone. It's slim pickings this year. Sure there's games like Kingdom Hearts and Legend of Zelda, but I don't like RPGs. So, I've only had a small amount of games I have been anticipating, so let's start this blog entry with the runner-up. This year's runner-up is Bookworm. This game mixes Boggle with Zookeeper for the DS. Make words with tiles Boggle-style. When you clear tiles, new tiles drop from the top. While the game is fun, it is a bit too easy (

F-Zero: Maximum Velocity

This would have been a good racing game except for one thing: Bumping into the walls is bad. What I wonder is how do they expect you to take sharp corners WITHOUT bumping into the walls? Naturally, I find myself bumping into the walls all too frequently, which leads to me losing power and eventually having to quit the game. And that's in Training mode with nobody else on the track. Stupid move with the punishing you for something you have to do a lot. It's like the game is punishing you for play

Fire Pro Wrestling

It's back! GBA Chronogaming is back! Seeing as how this is from BAM! Entertainment, which has a lousy track record, I was expecting a lousy game. And that is exactly what I got. It could have been a contender, but instead, with the difficulty setting on ONE, I was being wiped on the floor. This didn't last three minutes until I turned it off in disgust. The CPU opponent was kicking me, punching me and outright beating me up. Sure, I got a few kicks in (or did I? I couldn't tell.) but I suck at t

All I need is one more game and I'm at 300 unique 2600 titles! Earth Dies Screaming and Gremlins came yesterday. Also, work on Fill Er Up for the TI83+ is stalled because I don't know if I can find anyone to answer the problem I'm having. All I want to do is to find some way to "read" the playfield to see if there is a + sign on any given space.

Fun With a TI84+

Well, I got a TI84+. Seeing as how it came with the USB wire and it had more memory than a TI83+. I'm going to program (and download) games for it. My first few attempts were futile, mostly because I didn't know what I was doing, but I finally did something at least a little worthwhile. An original game concept called "Fill 'Er Up" in which you fill up the screen with plus signs, but there's an asterisk that randomly goes around the screen erasing your plus signs. Not only that: if you run into
