Working on onion rings

I love onion rings. Almost as much as I love hamburgers, pizza, and spaghetti. This morning, I decided to attempt to make the onion ring more visible on a real Game Gear. I decided to make it darker and fuller. This helped a lot. I also found during the boss stage there was a certain place on the screen where you could hide and never have the onion rings get you. So then also this morning I fixed that. There is no place to hide anymore. I burned the roof of my mouth a few da

Every possible situation.

I read somewhere a quote about game developers that said something along the lines of to be prepared for every possible situation the player can come up against. I took that to heart. I was working on my Hamburgers Game Gear game for 5 hours because of it. That got me wondering what would happen if a player got hit after shooting the 60th enemy, which would then normally make the burger go up to the boss. I had to fix that. I also had to fix the fact that the enemy's shot should still be on the

A purple mountain

I continued work on Flying Hamburgers for Game Gear. After I made a new song for level 3, I began work on level 5. This is a mountain. It's purple because I had judged it to be too white and then possibly be mistaken for clouds. So I changed it to purple because gray is almost like white. That and this is the Game Gear, so I can use color for it!   I have decided to break up the monotony of predictable enemy movements. So beginning on level 5, there is a random chance the en

Game gear stuff

So I discovered a bug in Yum! that caused me to give up on it. I turned my eyes back on Flying Hamburgers. I made a new background for level 4. I'm not sure it's clear where it takes place. So I'm asking you, where do you think this is taking place? I liked the music for levels 1 and 2. I made some new music for level 4. Now the music for level 3 (desert) seems out of place. I am wondering if I could make cool-sounding desert music.   I am hoping to make this the best g

A title is required, but I don't have one.

So I was having some trouble with the mouth in the game. It kept flickering when it went from death back to the in-game. I had to work on this for several hours, trying various things to make it not do that, and I think I succeeded here.   I also made it so it's okay if you don't eat the burger. But if you do, you get an extra life. So the burger only appears when you don't have 2 lives remaining. You can download the game here. I also made it so it gives me a .gg file instead of

The benefits of having a short name.

This: Good thing I go by "Chris" because I couldn't fit "Christopher" on there. I lost count of how much mail I got addressed to "Christophe". I also made a change to the game. I put in a brief pause between deaths. That took a few hours to do because I couldn't figure out how to make the food stop. But I eventually did.   I got my R-Zone Super Screen. It does take batteries. But it takes 4 D batteries, something I wasn't expecting. The batteries that were already in there ha

Cookie.

So I'm looking at the title screen of my Game Gear game I have been making. Which looks okay, but my name isn't very noticeable. So I decided to change the title screen. It then looked like this: Which, while looking better, still left me with two unused colors. I figured I could use those colors to make the cookie look even better. So I just spent the last half-hour fighting with the thing and got this: This cookie looks much better than the last one IMHO. So this

small burger.

Changes to "Yum!" made in the past 22 hours. added the hamburger in. The hamburger appears less often and can only be on the screen after level 1 and if you have 1 or 0 lives left. made the inside of the guy's mouth darker. added in a special sound for eating a hamburger. drew different Brussels sprouts and broccoli sprites. raised the score position a little. Right now each level is 10 foods for testing purposes. I plan to raise it to either 50 or 100 when

Eating cookies and pizza in different places.

I decided to work some more on Yum!, a game I was making, for the Game Gear. But I stopped working on it because it was too simple. Well, I thought long and hard about what would make the game better to play. Here is what I came up with.   First off, I decided I'm going to use different locales where the action takes place. For the second level, I designed a desert with pyramid and cacti. I know they don't really go together and you can't find cacti in Egypt, but oh well. Mor

The brown desert

Deserts are orange. That isn't good. Why? Because I want to put a desert in the hamburger game for the Game Gear. And as it turns out, almost all junk food is also orange. I made a desert picture, put it in the game, and it was tough to tell where the onion rings were going because the desert sand was almost the same color as the onion ring. My solution: Make the desert brown. And to make sure people recognize it as a desert, I put in two cacti. (It scrolls. There really are 2 cacti. I

Doing the same thing twice

Last night I worked on my Game Gear game. I think I broke it, so I went to sleep. I woke up this morning and tried to do the same thing again, only this time it worked. I thought I had broken the game after that because I tried to get rid of a long pause after you shot the chicken nugget, but I think I fixed what I had. I changed the background of level 1 back to the realistic clouds I had tried earlier. And I also changed the game over screen because I didn't like what I had before.

back to the Game Gear.

Today's Game Gear coding session was fruitful. I got the beginnings of a level 4 in the game. The burger goes under water. Tomorrow I will compose some music for the level and then I will be done with level 4 and move on to level 5. In the ROM in the link of my signature, there is a level select cheat for testing games. On the title screen, press 1 for the level you want to start on. No presses starts you on level 1, one press for level 2, and so forth. I will probably remove this in t
