Waiting for the card (part 2)

So I get a call from the doctors' office saying they are going to fax the excuse today. So this has been dragged on for a few more days. Plus it's the last possible day because the jury summons said within 5 days of me receiving the letter (but again, how do they know when I got the letter?) I got it on Friday. Today is Wednesday. Stupid slowpokes. What is wrong with people?! I will be so angry if I have to go because I have never done it before since I've been excused all the other times. And a

Waiting for the card

So everything apparently has been done regarding my jury duty...except notify me if I have been excused or not. So as I wait on pins & needles waiting for the card to come, I got the mail. No card, but I did get a 7800 joystick. Attempt #3 at getting a working Atari 7800 joystick. I plugged the joystick in. Turned on the Atari 7800.   And lo and behold, I was able to move! Left right up down, all that. And both fire buttons work as well! Now I can actually control my 7800 with a co

The death of PayPal

Google Pay is stupid because it won't let me link to a bank account instead of having to use a credit card. I don't want a credit card. PayPal WAS fine, but now I see more and more online stores losing my business (buying expensive things, mind you), simply by choosing NOT to take PayPal. So my question is: WHAT IS WRONG WITH IT?!

Jury duty is stupid

So on Friday I got called for jury duty. I have been worrying a lot since then. Especially since it just had to be Friday and not Monday. And I have to get the doctor's excuse in five days after I got the letter, but how does the court know when I got the letter? So I go all the way to the doctors' office after Google telling me it was open only to discover it had been closed on weekends "until further notice." So I have to go back tomorrow. Why go in the first place? The stupid doctors office f

Atari 7800

So after about a month of waiting for my Atari 7800 a/c adaptor, it finally came today. I plugged it in to one of my 7800s and turned it on. Nothing. So I unplugged it and got the other 7800 I had laying around and plugged it in. Success! It turned on. I can now play 7800 games again. That is, if I use the 2600 controller. Right now I don't have a proper 7800 controller to use. So I went on eBay and bought one. That's why I asked what OEM meant. Although I don't know why bother since you can typ

GoSub finished

So I finished GoSub. Now that's all left to do is testing for bugs. You can help me since I posted the most recent file in the Homebrew Programming subsection.   With it done, I decided to work on the Odyssey² programming a bit. I tackled my Soccer game I was making but had to give up on. I think I finally have it the way I want it. To kick the ball, press ACTION. Move the guy on the field with the joystick. And, I also made a video-game themed "crossword puzzle" which I'll

Level designing work completed

I got really bored, so I decided to design the last two levels I needed. I thought a nice round number of 32 levels would be good. The levels were beginning to look the same anyway. Not much you can do with only 18x11 grid size to work with (which, by the way is 216x132 pixels, but you have to take into account the game's background pixels are 8x8, so it's really 18x11.) So now all I have to do is think of an ending, put it in, and then I'll be actually done with the game. Which is kind of hard

Border work

I decided the submarine in the border needed to look more like a submarine. But I didn't know what a submarine looked like. So I googled "submarine drawing" and it led me to a bunch of clip art. Some things remained constant: The submarines were colored yellow (I guess they're all Beatles fans), but the "fin" also looked similar: Two parts that stick out and a thing that whirls in the middle between the two "fins". So I updated the look of the submarine in the Super Game Boy border so it now loo

<50 levels

I store the data for the levels past 25 in bank 3. I have only 26% room left in that bank. So I will definitely not have enough room for 50 levels. Which is probably good since that would be an extremely long game. Most GoSub games have about 20 different mazes. So this Game Boy version is way bigger than all the previous ones since it has 28 mazes and counting. Today I worked on the audio side of things. I noticed the game's audio went crazy for a few frames sometimes when switching

Celebrating World Oceans Day

Today (June 9) is world oceans day, where we celebrate the world's oceans. Never mind that if you visit the ocean, you will drown if you don't have a scuba outfit on. Or aren't in a submarine. Speaking of submarines, I thought "What better way to celebrate world oceans day than to work on my GoSub game?" I changed and added a few things: fixed some minor graphic errors in my border. added level 27. added short submarine crash graphics so it looks like the sub crashes and fa

Super Game Boy border

So I went ahead and worked almost all my waking hours yesterday attempting to make a Super Game Boy border for GoSub. At about 6 or 7 a.m. or so, I finally got it working. This morning, I think I fixed the bugs I had introduced when I added in the border yesterday. This was showing up for a split second (a few frames) upon startup after the border had gone up. So I figured I (instead of the SGB emulator getting the border data and displaying it) must have done something wro

Coral reefer madness

So I was looking at GoSub's title screen and something struck me. The submarine was touching the coral on the title screen. I thought this may lead to a player thinking it was OK to go through the coral, which is not the case. I had two options: move the action on the title screen up, or cut the coral down so the sub doesn't move through it. I chose the latter. I don't feel like making more levels today. I don't know what's wrong with me. I haven't been feeling good these last few wee

You Only Die Once

So I was looking through my code to see what changes I could make to make it apparently not crash or make weird buggy noises or anything. The only thing I could think of was I wasn't bankswitching at the correct times. So I changed when I was. That seems to make a huge difference. With that solved, I designed a new level: level 25. I had been noticing something weird all this time. Sometimes it felt like the lives counter wasn't working correctly and was taking off two lives inst

GoSub for Game boy - update for 6/3/2022

Last night I went to work on GoSub again. Last time I left it I couldn't get the octopi to stay within the boundaries of the screen. Well, I don't know how, but I think I finally fixed that. But a few more interesting things of note popped up.   One time, the game just crashed for no apparent reason. The screen went all white and nothing could be done. And another time, I had the game set to start on level 22. I played it to level 23 and it went back to the title screen like it was sup

Apples.

Yes, apples. It was about 3½ years ago that I had a dream about making apple-related crossword puzzles. Bored, I looked through my computer and found one that wasn't really stupid. So I assigned its clues to all begin with the letter a. I changed some really stupid words with better ones. But then I had a new problem arise: The size of the .pdf file was really huge. It was due to the apple picture I put in it. So I reduced the apple picture to have 20 colors and the apple image was now only 8kb.

Things I am waiting for.

My copy of Cosmic Carnage for the 32X. My copy of Tempo for the 32X. I didn't care about the label condition, and I still had to pay $85 for it! I don't think my Tempo Jr. for the Game Gear cost that much. A new 7800 power cord from this outfit called AtariGuide.   So I got back into my 32X as you can see. I am not going to attempt to rebuy Knuckles Chaotix and Kolibri because when I had them I didn't enjoy them very much (I will however, contemplate a Chaotix purchase

Not a good day

So I didn't get a newspaper today. Then I realized it was a holiday. So that means we won't get mail either. All the holidays are stupid. They cause almost the entire world to shut down for a day. So I propose we get rid of them all so the world can act normally all the time. I mean really. I know people died for our freedom. Why does that have to mean the whole country has to shut down for a day?   I had to turn my TV off and back on twice until I got a picture I can actually see. The

Drawing

I like drawing. It relieves stress. At least it does for me. And you're doing it for fun and not expecting anyone to care what it looks like. Especially when you aren't very good at drawing. So I got to thinking earlier "He sure eats a lot of buildings. Where does Godzilla go to the bathroom?" That led to this: I figured he doesn't go TO the bathroom, he just leaves it in his path of destruction like any other animal. I also got to looking at my old comics I did earlier this year and

Game Gear 2022-05-27

So I tried and failed to make a Master System version of this game I was making. It worked okay on the emulator but when I tried it on a real Master System, the graphics were all glitchy. So I gave up and went back to work on the Game Gear version. I added a couple of things. Death - When the game ends, it just restarts again. I need to add a title screen to come back to, as well as a "Game over" message. Faster food - When you reach 25 points, the food flies at your face faster.

Face It

I decided to stop on Zurich In Reach for a little bit. I thought of the game I had begun where food was zooming to the head and you opened or closed the mouth to eat or not eat the food. So I went to work on that for about an hour or so. I didn't add anything new, I just changed what code I had to attempt to make it better. I don't have much to it now, just the face, a score, a life counter and food. A list of stuff I want to add: a title screen. a game over screen. sound e

50 years of Odyssey

The Magnavox Odyssey is the world's first-ever video game console. It was released in 1972. It is so primitive, it needs overlays to have any sort of graphics for it. One thing that struck me about the instructions was the font. How it was close (but not quite) to the font Atari later used for its 1977 console the Atari VCS (2600). I skimmed the Odyssey 2 installation and game rules book I have and made some changes to a similar font and made my own font. There were some letters not present

Chicken nuggets

Does anyone else have to "select a blog" to enter a blog entry? I only have one blog, yet I still have to do that. It's so dumb. My cable box quit working. That means I can't get any more TV in my room unless I get a new cable box or get the antenna from the garage out. If I get a new cable box, I doubt I would be able to record anything off of TV on it since "copyright" messages come up on the other cable box in the living room. I knew this day would come eventually, and it just did yesterday.

Philosophical games

What is the point of living if all you do is die in the end? I mean think about it. You're born, you learn you are not going to live forever, and dread some point in time you don't even know when that you aren't going to exist any more. I could die tomorrow. I could live to be 125. Who knows?   So while waiting to die, I turn to video games for escapism (even though I die a ton in them as well. I can't beat Sonic Chaos with a Game Genie.) So this compels me to write video games I will

Hamburgers 2022-05-20

Can't believe it's May 20th already. Time flies. In another forty or so years, I'll be dead. I guess I'd better do something productive in that time. I've been feverishly working on Hamburgers for the INTV (no fever have I, though) these past few days. I replaced the corn cob with a turnip. This came about as I figured out a way to have the snow in the mountain level be more white. Which made the corn cob nearly invisible since it's yellow. So I replaced it with a turnip. I still had the problem

Eye problems

My eye began hurting yesterday. Even though my eye hurt, I decided to give up on GoSub for the Game Boy because I couldn't get the octopi to follow my demands of being on screen at all times. One kept wandering off even though I told it to keep it below a certain y position. So I need to just give up on it because it's being a moron.   So with that project gone, I needed something else to work on. So I decided to continue work on my Intellivision game I was making. I guess I'll have to
